I feel like humans kinda have two modes: wishing we could re-experience something for the first time, and panicking when something familiar becomes unfamiliar
@TheTriple20003 жыл бұрын
The concept of taking things for granted I supposed. Humans are flawed in this area in that as much as we can love something, that love can slowly drift away if we have too much of it or is too comfortable with it. Only when they're gone or out of our reach would we start to panic and feel stronger emotions for it.

I kinda know what you mean. We need something stable and familiar sometimes. When something we adore is changed it feels a little like we're loosing a piece of ourselves. But then there are people who like new stuff and changes all the time. For me it's both. In Minecraft, I wanted to explore more, develop building techniques, and have a giant map on my wall of the world I conquered. But either I don't have that much time, or I prefer peace and simplicity, so I end up in a small, familiar area and a crappy house that I'm happy with.

I have been playing since 2013 and have never felt any version to be "my version" I have always jumped between version, old to new, new to old, and through that never felt any to be mine. I always play the new update until the next. The game is my home, not the version.

I used to be like that, but I found myself attached to 1.8 and it's follow ups (the sub update things like 1.8.2 and 1.8.9). Nothing wrong with 1.9, I just find 1.8 more fun
@Princess_Garnet3 жыл бұрын
While I don't particularly feel attached to certain older versions, now that you mention it, there is an "era" of versions I consider "my original Minecraft" and for me that'd be 1.2.5 through 1.6.4 (I got the game at release 1.2.5). I definitely feel like the game has only gotten better overall, so i prefer newer versions... but I also get how others prefer certain version(s) as there are changes that eventually make things "different" for some people. The video describes examples like beta 1.8 and release 1.9 as big updates for the reason they added or changed things that impacted the fundamental gameplay loop for many. In my case, however, it was release 1.7 that the first major one that changed a lot for me. While 1.7 added a lot of biomes and blocks and items and I loved all that, it majorly impacted world generation, and not all in ways that I preferred. I miss oceans being oceans instead of glorified lakes, and the climate zones are so strict that they make worlds more monotonous than earlier versions, despite having more biomes to offer. For someone who's playstyle is largely "explore and build the world up" and "stick to one/very few worlds", this one was the big shakeup for me. It's not that I didn't like it entirely.... but it was definitely different. And, there were also a lot of technical and performance changes with it as well (no more anti-aliasing without a workaround that itself stopped working right later, big changes to resource packs, big performance increases, etc.), which 1.8 was also guilty of (this one also removed Advanced OpenGL and implemented new culling methods and changed rendering which, to this very day, I see still has issues where portions of terrain may just... disappear based on the angle you are viewing it from...). 1.8 also had a bad technical approach on how to implement the new water temples, and anyone with a world from 1.6.4 or prior will tell you why. Since I pre-generated my world to keep a consistent square border before 1.7 released, this behavior of 1.8 also gave me a major headache as a result, and sometimes just forced already generated regions to start resetting. For my and my playstyle at the time, and the way i had handled my one world I was playing, 1.7 and 1.8 were a major one two punch that left me feeling like the 1.6 and earlier era was "home" for a while. So, while they didn't add any new gameplay things I didn't like, I seemingly stand in contrast with most of the community as I dislike these two updates almost the most, and absolutely loved the supposedly controversial followup that was 1.9 (I'm not a PVP player so I was fine with all the combat changes to where 1.8 and prior feel archaic now, and I loved the changes to the end). But ultimately, I agree with you. Minecraft feels like Minecraft throughout to me, even if certain versions are radically different and feel like different chapters or eras, they all still feel like Minecraft. It's a ten year old game so it has had to change to stay relevant, and I think the game has basically only been getting better with each update (yes, even 1.7 and 1.8 made it better overall).

"My" version was always 1.9, the first version I sort of officially started on. I didn't swap versions until 1.12, the world of color update. I switch back to 1.8 to play on Hypixel, I jump around versions for modpacks and servers, I play the latest full update (with optifine) in my single player worlds. It is not surprising that the cave update was demanded for so long and finally showed up. Updates since 1.0 consisted a lot in filling the game : filling surface biomes, filling oceans, filling the end, filling the nether and now filling the caves. As I see it, it's a natural progression, and each major updates is what bring me back to the game. Also I feel like the game with the caves and cliffs is at last complete. I do feel nostalgic for the beta, it's simpleness and emptiness made the charm of the game. I don't really wish to come back to it though, because of its simplicity emptiness. I started playing Minecraft shortly after it was bought by Microsoft, having watched people play it since the early days. Honestly, I don't think there has been any update which has truly changed it, only expanded on it. The adventure update added hunger. The combat update added layers of depth to the combat system. The Aquatic update turned the oceans from a dull biome populated only by squid into its own little world full of both life and danger. Village and Pillage transformed villages. The Nether Update added many new and beautiful biomes. Caves and Cliffs part two will add beautiful new world generation and even more room to build just about anything. The Wild update will drastically change redstone in the form of Sculk Sensors and the Allay, and bring that same beautiful world generation to biomes that were mostly left out. The eventual second combat update(the ones that currently exist in the form of the java edition combat tests)will once again add depth to the combat system. Upgrades and expanding on concepts is a form of change. But that's not a bad thing, and that a minority will feel left behind and play older versions is not a reason to leave everything the same. If you look objectively at Minecraft now and Minecraft before the adventure update, you see that while the version before the adventure update may induce nostalgia in some, Minecraft today is a game that is far more complete, far more in depth, and which holds far more possibilities(Which, I would argue, is a big part of the point of sandbox games like Minecraft.) Change does not ruin a game. It is merely the game growing and expanding. Maybe it slowly turns into something new. But in the end, it's still the minecraft we all know and love. It has merely grown with us, and while some may find that they have grown apart, many others will find that they have grown closer to it than ever before.

The thing that people complain about, the thing that was lost, was not something tangible. It was the simplicity of not having more depth. I agree - change is good. this is my position too. things like the combat update or beta 1.8 I totally get feeling like they really change stuff. but I don't think I can agree about the cave update. caving has been the same for so long, and yet other forms of adventure have received additions and updates and as someone who loves to mine and spelunk the only feelings I get toward this update are excitement. it's something the game naturally goes towards and has needed for years. it's just also something that's a big project and difficult to tackle. I think more people will gravitate to pre 1.9 than pre 1.18. significantly more, and of course many already do. that's just so much more of a fundamental change and less of an obvious direction for the game to go in. I mean seriously, imagine if these crazy changes to caves happened during the beta generation tinkering phase. it would be more of a footnote and not that big of a change. the caves and cliffs update is a change that really doesn't change the DNA of minecraft at all to me. it's perfectly what the game is already about. I don't see any separation of old game to new there, like the ship example. it's not "shiny and new" really. it's more like if you finally replaced the old rudder that was always too small and never quite did its job.

Before more complex forms of life evolved from the simple fish." (i don't really believe in evolution, but you get the point). I play MC probably for 8-10 years (not sure for how long), and i always liked new updates. MC in the past SUCKED. It was fun, but i don't feel very nostalgic about it. It was so incomplete, and lacking. When i started playing MC, there already was life bar (hearts, hunger, food etc), so i don't give a F about a SIMPLER version. Actually i started playing Creative, and then when i learned to play Survival, i never went back to Creative again!! 1.18 update is awesome. It's a bit difficult on the coal resource, because there's very little of it deep down. And also, exposure of raw ores in caves is lesser than before. But MC mining was too easy in the past, and i agree with the nerfs. The thing that plagues me are Phantoms (but they exist for years already, i know,). I refuse to sleep in MC, and i wanna build at night, and i hate to not be able to build outside, because Phantoms don't know how to stop spawning. Everything else is mostly alright. I don't want to be a simple FISH in water, that eat worms, and eventually gets eaten by a larger fish/shark. Being a complex human is far better, and i hope we evolve even further into Gods, irl, and i hope for more updates of MC in the future.

So in your conclusion, You will be stayed here on the docks (Ver. 1.8) *forever* while the other will go on to the next update? In my word that's fine, because your taste that you something you love is hard to move on. But in my case, I do something to find of myself; a new beginning from one to the new, and it's always been to move on every single update. I've been playing this game since 2011, started as a Minecraft Java Web (since is the only available I can play since back in the day), and then, I play in the Pocket Edition in 2012 until I stop since 0.8.0 because in the next update the 0.9.0 changes the world and bringing the introduction of infinite worlds. But then I have to move on and start playing that version and into the future. I adapt more and more into my experience in every single game but in my perspective, *it's still the same game* and it will always have in my eyes, just like me and you. As we grow older, our bodies will be going to change like a Ship of Theseus but we are still the same. But in our perspective, we live in our experience and it must adapt to every single event that has been hard on, so stop staying in the past and move forward to a better future.

I first played Minecraft around beta 1.4. I was a kid with no money, so I played it in one of those free browser sites they had back then. It enthralled me, so much so that I eventually begged my parents to get it for me that same year so I could play multiplayer on legit servers. I remember being terrified of mobs and the night, of hiding in dirt holes, of digging through a series of caves that were running with water. It was incredible. Servers brought interaction I craved, the update that added pistons sparked my interest in redstone. I became good at it to be useful to people. Hopping through servers, I eventually settled down and became a regular on one. I made many friends, and eventually became an admin on it. However, it slowly died. Less and less people came on, until I too moved on. Seeking the purest form of Minecraft, I discovered 2b2t. I became a regular on that, eventually. It was different, a challenge. Refreshing. But the grind was too much. I realized that no matter what I did, the fulfillment of climbing to the top would never justify the effort. So I lost interest in Minecraft. I moved on, finished high school, did other things with my time. Discovered D&D as a hobby. Minecraft had its resurgence, which I noticed through KZbin recommended, but I didn't really care that much. Fast forward to 2020, I'm browsing YT for creepypastas. KZbin recommends me a cheesy video that's some sort of showcase of a Minecraft creepypasta world that's all broken and weird. I go down the rabbit hole and eventually watch a documentary on Herobrine, the myth of which I always kind of liked. Through this documentary, I find out that the most recent version of Minecraft released at the the time didn't actually specify in the changelog that they removed Herobrine. For some reason, this sparks something in me. I launch up Minecraft for the first time in forever, generate a world with the seed 666 and go ham. I was hunting Herobrine. That never worked out, but I did have a lot of fun. The greatest time I had was when I entered the new Nether for the first time (I had set a subgoal of collecting all music discs, so I needed the new Pigstep). I spawned in the crimson forest and, holy shit, it was like I was a kid experiencing the game for the very first time again. Things were new, and terrifying, and atmospheric. I liked Lena Raine's music in Celeste, so I recognized her style when the new tracks began to play. I played MC for quite a while longer, didn't travel to the End, though, life called me away before that. Now that I'm free again, I've been specifically waiting for the cave update before I play again. I hope it is a fun and exciting new experience, same as I had before.

I had similar feeling when they added horses. As small as it seems, it was a big deal for me personally. Now I think back, it is trivial now. I found bigger and profounder ways to dig out fun out of minecraft. Game will change as people can change. One might keep its core preference but it also has the chance to change. To reflect that, minecraft must keep evolving.

I’ve been playing since beta 1.7.3, and I was able to play the game during beta 1.4 at my grandmother’s house. I honestly feel like the game has only gotten tremendously better from there! I love the new combat system, I love the new caves and mountains, I love the new Nether, the new oceans, new villagers, everything about it. The only thing I missed was how the terrain in beta 1.7.3 was shaped, but now that’s returning in 1.18 with MASSIVE upgrades to it! I do see where you’re coming from though, and I do respect it- not everyone has the same taste.

Hmm.. I understand Your point. I left playing the game after the End was introduced. I had this strange feeling that this game is going into direction i wont like - and i quitted. After some years i saw some videos on Yt where people played aquatic update and i was interested in the game again. When i came back - i loved it even more than before BUT i didnt forget about the End dimension which is still my least favourite part of the game. When i found the stronghold, went trhough the portal and killed the dragon - i realized two things: 1. Nothing has changed here. It is horrible designed place and it is still boring in my opinion and nothing is changed. 2. However... nobody is making me to play this part of the game. There is a lot i can focus on and i can play the game like i wanted to play. And i stick to point 2. You can play whatever you like - it is our choice. On the other hand as someone with very similar feeling in the past i suggest to give this update a try. Sometimes change is for better . I wouldnt say that this update will ruin Minecraft - It will change it no doubt about. But i highly recommend to try it really and try slowly adapt :)

I’ve always found the nostalgic minecraft community interesting as they usually split into two groups one that misses the game being “difficult” and “fantastical” and the other that misses the game being “calm” and relaxing”. We all have different experiences in Minecraft which is amazing and these updates will just give each experience more variety. Each adventure will always be different, the world will be more motivational and inspiring, and the lore will be even more mysterious. The game is still just as calming as before and just as difficult. The updates are only giving us more opportunities to use our imagination to its fullest potential. Minecraft is a sandbox game and the only time Minecraft should be ruined for anyone is when that fact changes.
@alienxotic50282 жыл бұрын
the game is literally harder now lmao. The new nether is much more challenging. Combat was easier in earlier versions because of spam clicking. There are much stronger mobs than the basic night creatures. The enderdragon has an actual AI.

I understand your trepidation, but as someone who has played the game since the first versions came out, I can tell you that in someone's opinion every update since Alpha 1.2.6 has "ruined" the feel of the game. The game by its very nature has changed a lot even from alpha to beta, and even more since then, I don't think this is a bad thing, I think it's just the nature of it. I remember that when pistons were added there was a VERY vocal sub-group of the community that swore on the hill they wanted to die on that pistons being added to the game would DESTROY it, irreparably ruin the game by changing it so fundamentally as to add a mod to it. This happens every update since then, and especially every update since 1.0, something gets added, someone gets mad and says it will ruin the game forever, then nothing happens and everyone moves on. But I do agree that 1.9 was the sticking point where things got more radicalized at the very least in the community due to things changing so suddenly (even though I liked the update). Also, I don't think 1.7 is "minecraft", that depends on who you ask, and you'll get as many different opinions forward and backward from the first version of alpha to the current version as you have comments below this.
@MudakTheMultiplier2 жыл бұрын
Oh my goodness I vibe with this concept so much. I played a *lot* of Minecraft 1.5 because I did mods and 1.5 was a hard update for most mod developers (it's amazing what breaks when you change redstone). Because of this a lot of modders neglected to update to 1.6 since they had put so much work into 1.5 already. I spent a very long time on 1.5 modded, and to this day I feel weird playing newer vanilla. I keep finding little things that catch me out as thinking I've got a mod on (the fact that they literally hired a mod creator to do mobs contributes to that I'm sure). What's really odd is I don't feel weird about playing newer modded versions, just vanilla. It's almost like the fact that it's supposed to be the baseline makes me feel weird when there's change and when I'm changing things intentionally then it's fine because it's not quite the same anyway.

I played Minecraft today and I’m still trying to block with my sword, seeing this video puts into perspective how long ago that was, 5 years. Doesn’t feel it. I’ve never crafted netherite anything nor fully explored the new nether, I’ve only recently got an elytra in a survival world, I still don’t understand ocean temples; never fully explored one and have never really played round with villagers. And it’s not like I haven’t been playing Minecraft, I have, I’ve just not been playing with these features, I’ve been playing Minecraft as I knew it in a game I no longer know. Today was the first time I’ve gone into these new caves, it felt, weird. It wasn’t really a shock to the system I won’t exaggerate and it still felt like Minecraft but it just wasn’t my Minecraft, like I was playing with a mod or something. It’s a feature I can no longer ignore, I can’t really play my Minecraft in this game anymore. I’ve been drifting away from Minecraft and really video games in general as of recently. It’s just kinda dawning on me how much has changed. I drink, I drive, I work, when did time start moving so fast?

I played the game as a kid WAY before 1.4 and I remember jumping at everything. Every cave felt like an adventure and any bit of progress was a rush of amazing excitement. Of course like everything, the things that seem so big and crazy to us as kids become normal and unexciting. Eventually nostalgea isn't really the same. While the old days of surviving your first night and finally beating the ender dragon are memorable, you can't really relive them. I think the best thing for the game's future is to keeping making huge changes and new additions, bossfights, enemies and things to make it a more complicated game. And if people still long for simplicity, the old versions of the game is always waiting for them.

Your video makes a great point; the game changes drastically every 5 years. Say what you want, but Mojang's team has done a phenomenal job at refreshing the formula in a way that prevents the game from going stale. I've been playing since Alpha so I definitely have experienced the "Beta 1.7 is the best the game ever was". But I've accepted these changes and will always hold those memories closely. I don't play Minecraft often anymore now that I am an adult. But just like the smol me from years prior, I am somewhat experiencing the same feelings as playing the game for the first time every time I come back after an enormous amount of updates passed by.
@Toksyuryel3 жыл бұрын
During that same time period when you became cemented into 1.8, I decided to jump into playing with mods and I think this is what has kept my interest in the game so strong all these years through all the changes. It's already the nature of playing with mods for the game to be radically altered, so I never feel put off by these kinds of changes to the base game. As well, it's usually the more technical changes of each update that excite me the most as they allow mods to do new more interesting things. 1.8 was the last time I ever actually played vanilla. I have played exclusively with mods ever since.

Friends at school would talk about it a lot, plus the new update came out, I had to try it. I loaded up a new world, and everything changed. There was now new oceans, beautiful dolphins. Even a heart of the sea, which I was confused. Minecraft I as KNEW it, was gone. Now a new ship has emerged with grand upgrades. Minecraft, has changed

Honestly, if you asked me, the gap between middle game and end game needs to be increased, as well as there being more content and reason to play the game after beating the Enderdragon. And along with that, there needs to be more dynamic structures and reasons to explore the world instead of staying inside the map quater you spawn in.

You guys actually beat the ender dragon and call it quits? Minecraft is not an rpg remember, and survival mode is just an extension of creative. Its a sandbox, its meant to have as little intrusive features and structures as possible so that the game doesn't feel cramped and doesn't interfer with your imagination. Believe it or not, the reward for killing the ender deagon isn't the exp or the egg, its getting a chance of finding an elytra. An item allowing you to fly/glide, which is very useful for builders and for admiring YOUR work in the game.

I would say that a game like minecraft thrives on change. I have been playing Minecraft for years and on different editions. I have massive nostalgia for the game but I'm not blind to the new updates. Minecraft is a sandbox in which you can do whatever you want and that still remains. Another important thing is that there is not just a single type of player. Not all players like old versions. There are builders, speedrunners, redstone engineers who might take no interest in older editions. Minecraft updates are amazing because they tend towards all kinds of players. The truth is, games age and their mechanics age too. I've seen all of the old caves and my heart craves more excitement and adventure. I will miss the old caves (not much tho) but when I got to experience the new minecraft, it ignited the passion that I had lost for the game. My point is that not all players are the same. Some may be nostalgia-fueled while others will inevitably welcome change with open arms. The greatest thing about minecraft is that it's not restricted to a certain player's wishes and I hope that doesn't change. Sorry for the long text but I found this video very interesting and thought provoking. Good job!

I personally think that they should make the parts closer to surface level (above and below) mostly the same, and as you go higher up or further down, then it transitions into the more extreme terrain that they're introducing, otherwise It would take away the classic mining experience, and make it not feel like I'm playing on an amplified world.

I first played Minecraft in 2012 when it came out for the Xbox 360. I slowly lost interest as I grew up, but recently (about a year ago) I got back into the game. I joined back during the nether update, playing with some friends who were brand new to Minecraft and were experiencing it for the first time. It was fascinating to discover things together and how different our perspectives were. They were just simply learning a new game, while I, like an old timer from a dying generation, looked on in both wonder and discomfort at the foreign changes that seemingly popped out of nowhere. Polar bears? Flying? Netherite? It felt like modded Minecraft, and I wasn't sure how I felt about this new "Vanilla" standard. I reminisced about the days when iron golems were new, when the wither was new, when ocelots were first added and they weren't even called "cats" when you tamed them. I remember old boat mechanics and the old combat. I remember old Minecraft, and I remember watching it grow, but...nothing like this. This new growth is way more game changing. And, honestly? I love it, and I think it's genuinely the only way for Minecraft to survive. After playing with all of the new features for a good long while, giving them their fair shots and really trying to appreciate them for what they are without a biased mindset...these new updates breathe so much life and fresh air into Minecraft, I can't imagine playing the game in it's older form today. I don't think all of the new additions are total hits, but that just means I opt to not really direct my time into getting them. Fireworks don't interest me, neither do rabbits or piglins or new villager trading, but that's okay. Minecraft is big enough and advanced enough now that you can play it in a lot more ways than you used to be able to, and in my opinion that's a good thing. If you want a simple play style, play simpler. If you want a complex play style, play smarter. As a veteran, Minecraft feels fresher and more exciting than ever, with new content able to hold my interest like never before. Minecraft's future is bright and I'm proud to have played it for this long.
