At age 75, I'd been out of modeling for about 25+ years (previously building wooden model ships). Discovering this series of videos (there were about 15 of them then) was a total turn-on. I immediately purchased the Trumpeter Missouri and Pontos kits and have been in euphoria for the past 9 months. There is no way I could have gotten as far as I have without these videos, and I haven't even finished the main decks yet. Thank you for your extreme modeling skills, your generosity in sharing, and your excellent communication skills. You have certainly added some enjoyable years to this old dude's life.

My wife and I visited Pearl Harbor this past September and took the tour of the Mighty Mo and I was in awe of it's size but more so of it's history in WW2. I would love to build this model. I have checked availability and pricing. They're a few available on eBay along with the photo etch detail kits but the prices are unreal so I'll just admire your build. Thank you for sharing.

imagine having to do a 1/700 scale ship with full interior.... seats, beds, bathrooms, pipes, individual shells, magazine cranes, gun breeches, gears, bells and everything. that would be one heck of a build... also, 7:06 those canisters are probably depth charges.

You might try using small brass wire for your tie down cables. Would be easier to cut to length, paint and fit than trying to get in there with EZ line. Tougher too. That whole area is amazing with detail. Another fantastic video. Thanks Ben.

I want to thank you for renewing my interest in scale model building. I got out my airbrush compressor and it still worked (heck, the tank still had air in it after almost twenty years) and the airbrushes all worked fine after cleaning. I'm almost 40% done with my 1/200 scale German Battleship Bismarck (I'd post pics but I got the scaledecks wood deck with the swastika insignia and am afraid of it causing trouble for me (and you) with KZbin. I want to do the 1/200 HMS Hood as well although I have the 1/200 scale USS Arizona in the closet for my next build. Thanks for getting an old man a (sort of) new hobby.

6:45 If not for bombs the hardpoints may have been for smoke canisters or a radar unit. Some of the kits have the radar included.
@ILSRWY44 жыл бұрын
Yup - radar (or depth charges). Most likely radar. The kit just incorrectly supplied 2.
@B.A.S.Drydock4 жыл бұрын
Those 500 lb bombs you didn't know exactly what to do with them, are fuel tanks for longer flights! Fantastic looking my friend! Almost there!
@ILSRWY44 жыл бұрын
no they are either radar or depth charges for the ships self defense. Seahawks never carried drop tanks. The kit supplied the surface scan radar but incorrectly supplied 2 (one for each wing) when in practice the real planes only carried one... usually under the right wing.

those canisters are either the surface scan radar or are depth charges. As these planes were used as sub scout/hunters for the ships self defense. Also, the cockpit area should have been painted interior green or zinc Chromate Green.

The white canisters are extra fuel parts that were attached to the bottom of the plane for long range spotting missions
@ILSRWY44 жыл бұрын
Seahawks never carried drop tanks, so No those are not fuel tanks... mostly likely the kit included the surface scan radar BUT incorrectly supplied 2. Seahawks only carried one. (A/c radars were painted white) or could also be the depth charges they carried similar to those carried on PBY Catalinas. seahawks were used as sub scout/hunters for the ship's self defense. Those planes never ventured "long range" from the ship since they have no real self-defense themselves... other than 2 50 cal guns and float planes make for bad dog fighters... there was a provision although rarely used for extra fuel in a bladder installed in the "internal bomb bay" of the large center float.

I understood that the seahawks were put on board when the Missouri called at San Diego and Pearl Harbor in late 44 or Jan 45 prior to Pacific theater deployment. This is also about the time the ship was painted in Measure 22. Most of the kingfisher photos date to when the ship was working up in the Atlantic with the dazzle paint configuration. I noticed that you didn't use the life rafts that were stowed below the catapults. Oversight or documented "gotcha"??
@TheMidwestModelShop4 жыл бұрын
Just haven’t gotten to them yet.
@georgebattis28734 жыл бұрын
Ben, when you are first attaching the pieces of the catapult, what is that pink pencil looking tool you are using. It looks like it has a sticky end to pick up pieces. Where did you get it?
@TheMidwestModelShop4 жыл бұрын
It’s a wax pencil. I bought a pack of them on Amazon. They are meant to be used by nail stylists for putting little jewels and things on woman’s finger nails.

I have kind of a very different question is trumpeter ever gonna make they 1/200 scale battleships in Iowa class motorized and made in the 1980s configuration which was equipped with missiles and Gatling guns
@TheMidwestModelShop4 жыл бұрын
You can build these into RC versions yourself. As far as a 1991 build, I’m not sure they have that. You could convert it yourself without too much trouble.
@nickh50814 жыл бұрын
Just curious why you didn't use the old school Testors model glue plastic cement for the aircraft fuselage? I know that stuff is a stringy, messy nightmare in most cases, but the fact that it literally fuses the plastic together makes it ideal for tough fits like what you were explaining here. Nothing holds like that stuff if it's all plastic and under tension.

You get those skills the same way he did. Practice. And especially on some smaller projects. This is a pretty big project to start out on. But I suppose it is possible. You can bet dollars to donuts that this fellow has made MANY mistakes along the way in his model building, learned from them, and also learned from others. Also, for most things there isn't one "right" way to do it. Most people discover techniques that work well for them and may be different from what some others do.
