This is a solid analysis. This guy is a decent swimmer but I think he has a lot of the same problems that most people do. I know that I am struggling with similar things. Thanks

Brenton, your channel is truly precious. Everytime I watch a video, I get into the pool and I am so much more aware of my stroke and body position. I also like how kindly and patiently you explain things. I basically get better just watching your videos, that is so crazy. Thank you for your great content mate!

I’ve been following the power diamond for a year or so now and it seems like I am naturally moving towards the power rectangle with a pretty high elbow. Picked up a few seconds with the change. Thanks for the great videos.

The main problem as I see it: the flutter kick is too fussy. It surely drains his energy too fast.

Being able to swim at 1.30/100 as he does is different being CAPABLE to hold this pace for a race. He def can’t with this technique imo. Great analysis though, with a few improvements he’s gonna become a strong swimmer

Man I know this relates to my stroke because Ive been trying to actively feel the hand go alllll the way back. Cant wait til my coach is available again for some updated footage! Thanks for this great analysis.

I am surprised he doesn't mention his windmilling stroke. He shows the"pie" breakdown, and every stroke there is a period where there is NO arm out in front. There is the balance problem, and normally he would emphasize that, just didn't on this one.....

I went to the AIS in Canberra for a swimming assesment (work out what class to be put in..) and was told my technique was excellent - good reach and nice high elbows. They asked who taught me, I said KZbin but it was this channel.. :)

imo he also doesn't have a high elbow catch. In the side shots i think it's pretty obvious that he drops his elbows.

Good analysis as usual, and always useful! For me, the immediate issue was the angle of his legs - and it's interesting to see that he's kicking furiously, possible to get his legs to stay up! I think I'm in a similar situation (albeit slower), and have been told to counter sinking legs with core / glute engagement - easier said than done ;-) There are a lot of contradictory messages from swimming resources - we've all heard about getting the most out of the backend of your pull / exiting the water too early - but as we can see here, all he's doing late-pull is pushing up / ballistically exiting the water. Lastly, I've been working to counteract a dropped lead arm that I suspect has caused a bit of golfer's elbow (as I'm pushing straight down on the water) - in this swimmer's case I notice he's entering the water quite far out and starting his breath quite late - on his right (breathing) stroke he's barely front quadrant, and that results in balance issues. I'm only saying this because this is what I've identified in myself. And what I've done about it is concentrate on a slightly earlier entry followed by a reach (not glide) - which a) gives me time to turn to breathe, b) co-ordinates with a powerful hip rock / pull, and c) avoids dropping the lead arm. So far, golfer's elbow kept at bay, but am still swimming naff because I'm now using all these muscles I never needed due to poor technique ;-)

How much of this is related to poor propulsion from the kick?

One thing I've been working on recently is trying to spread my fingers a bit. I've heard it's a bit faster than having them together, but it feels really wrong. I don't know if I'm overdoing it or if it just feels wrong until you get used to it. Love these videos, I recommend them all the time. I've joined your course but haven't gotten around to emailing you yet. I'll find time one of these days.

I noticed if I spread fingers too much I can actually feel water turbulence between the fingers, which I think tells me I've gone too far.

As someone who has never learned freestyle before, what is the best way to get into it and learn? Seems like the only place near me with a lap pool would be a local Nitro Swimming. Either that or my 4ft pool at my apartment 😅 Is it best to get a coach or teach myself with your course, or both?? Is it necessary to record myself like this video so I can see where I need to improve. How would I do that if I’m alone? So many questions! Haha Love the breakdowns and all the work you put in these videos. Thank you for giving me hope that I can learn how to be a strong swimmer!

I think my technique is better than this guy's on all fronts. Still he *averages* 1:30/100y, while my *best* is 1:40/100m. So what am I doing wrong? 😭 At least I don't get exhausted.

Hi, I'm the guy swimming! Don't worry, I don't average 1:30 pace! I can literally only swim ~300 yards of freestyle at a time before having to stop to recover. My technique is so bad that 1:30 pace and 1:45 pace feel about the same in terms of difficulty (I guess because my legs sink even more when I'm going slower). I think I just did a poor job of explaining the situation when I sent in the video :)

Just a reminder for the people watching: it's per 100 yards, not meters. He says that in this video, but just in case you missed it. Not sure about the other videos, though. Brenton, thank you so much, I've learned a lot from you, but these confunsions with the numbers pisses me off so much that I'll unsubscribe from channel.

Pretty sure the units vary based on the athlete submitting the video. The pace is irrelevant as someone's crappy technique can still make them swim faster than someone with better technique due to body differences...

I would suggest opening up his fingers a bit on his arm pull. Also, looks to be a big arch in his back, which would contribute to the low hips and feet. "Suck in your gut like you are trying to put your belly button on your spine." Getting rid of that arch would lift both hips and feet. I would say that he does have a poor finish on his stroke. In part because his hand rotates side ways so he is losing pull, and there is no little wrist flip at the end, which can reduce stroke count a stroke or three per length of the pool, which is 25 yards for me. Not sure about pulling too far back though. For distance swimming, I think you are aiming for maximum distance per stroke which this would do. For a sprinter, then having a slightly shorter pull might be beneficial. I have tried to watch some of your pod casts, but for some reason, they put me to sleep.
