To me this is as beautiful as the statue of David. Absolutely superb! Congratulations. I would love to see a video of this engine running but recorded with better audio - the built-in camera microphone just doesn't do it justice and I'll bet it sounds lovely.

What amazes me is how these type of engines in full scale planes kept lubricated. One would think with the entire engine spinning it would throw the oil to the top of the cylinders, and heads, and smoke like crazy. They must of had one heck of an oiling system on them.
@InTheDogHouse3DPrinting5 жыл бұрын
@Possumlove Okay, thanks for pointing that out. I was wondering how they stayed lubed.

I remember when I saw my first Gnome radial at Fantasy of Flight , I thought , with all that spinning mass and the centrifugal force , how does the oil not pool in the cylinder heads ? Must be some kind of pump and plumbing system . Saw this gentleman's other engines . A master craftsman at it's finest . Thanks for the great video work as usual and God Bless .

thanks paul, not sure about the oil !

Even though these are 4 cycle engines, castor oil is mixed with fuel like a two stroke. That is why WWI pilots wore scarves, to wipe the oil from the exhaust from their goggles
@nigel9006 жыл бұрын
They pre-oiled each cylinder head with castor before takeoff.

With the whole engine as well as the prop rotating, the gyroscopic effect of that huge spinning mass must have made the aircraft an absolute sod to fly! How could you persuade it to change direction when the whole front end is essentially a huge gyro 'stabiliser'?
@JrGoonior6 жыл бұрын
From what I've read, The Sopwith Camel had just that problem it was difficult to roll against the rotation and easy the opposite direction...

Can you please tell me how to comtrol the speed of the engine since there is no carburettor and a throttle valve.
@tbobborap14 жыл бұрын
good question victor, I never asked but im guessing through ignition advance and retard and I know on the real engine / aircraft they controlled the engine speed simply by switching the ignition on and off to keep the rpm under control, leave the switch on and full power to take off and climb then to slow down and cruise keep switching on and off - crazy hey especially if in formation with other aircraft !

Beautiful piece of work. On a side note: I would not stand so close to the unsafe end of the propeller like these people in the audience do. At least a fence in between would make me feel a lot safer. Just saying.

why do the cylinders turn with the prop?
@tbobborap18 жыл бұрын
its designed that way to cool the cylinders more efficiently !
@Marc-hp3ne8 жыл бұрын
Awesome. First time i ever seen this. But the prop creates hectic wind does it not?
@williammoses62326 жыл бұрын
the propeller is bolted to the engine crank case. the crank shaft is bolted to the air frame and is stationary. the engine crank case, the cylinders, and the propeller, all rotate around the stationary crank shaft as you see in the film. this is why this type of engine is called a rotary engine. the crank shaft doesn't spin,,,, the entire engine dose
@thetezz00018 жыл бұрын
call me stupid but why does the cylinders turn with the blade ?
@stoves928 жыл бұрын
+TheTezla69 to cool the engine.
@thetezz00018 жыл бұрын
good idea but dose it not lose power as it is using its momentum instead of turning the blade ?
@stoves928 жыл бұрын
The engine spins around the crankshaft. The prop is fixed to the engine. They turn at the same speed so it doesn't lose power.
@thetezz00018 жыл бұрын

This man is SERIOUSLY underpaying himself.....willing to sell this for £15,000. That's about $26,770AUD at current market rates. For 18 months work, that's only £1.14 ($2.04AUD) per hour......that's SLAVE WAGES.......and it's still WAY MORE than I could afford......I'll just watch it, listen to it, envy it and drool instead....

Somponk Tongsuk: No ,it is a rotary engine, the Wankel,which you probably think is a rotary, is not a rotary at all. So you may learn something here, this is a rotary engine.
