Looks really good. Brings back memories of my childhood living at Clark AB in the Philippines. You'd hear those F4s roading off the flightline, then you'd see them leaving smoky black trails from their J79s, and occasionally you'd hear their sonic booms as they headed over the South China Sea towards Vietnam.

I had started a 1/48 Academy F-4C a couple months back, but shelved it due to other pending (home improvement) projects. It came with a really good paint diagram, which I copied and enlarged to match the model scale. Whenever I get around to finishing it, I'll cut the paint guide into stencils and try a similar technique where you roll out some putty into "ropes" and use them to stick the stencils onto the model, which elevates them slightly, giving that soft edge. The benefit is that instead of trying to freehand everything, then go back and feather the edges, you can freehand the tan, apply the stencils, then edge them with the greens. I'll let you know how it goes, but meantime, I've started on a Fujimi 1/12 1986 Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R750, so the Phantom will wait until that's done. Yes, ADHD is a thing with modelers...

Great technique of using the putty to create a not too soft or hard blend of the shapes of camo. I think I saw you use this technique before and have used it on some of my builds as well. Didn’t know what type of putty to use initially so I used good ol’ fashioned silly putty, got the same effect. Outstanding decal technique, the amount of time and effort you put into these builds is visible with the end result.

I actually looked for silly putty at my local stores and couldn’t find any. Then realized I had this stuff. Does the silly putty leave any residue? I used some off brand blue tac once and it left an oily residue.

@@seanerk5kt9 no residue from what I can tell, it was the true silly putty that comes in the colored plastic eggs.

@@seanerk5kt9 for info here in Australia we can get both blue and white tack…..I’ve found that the blue tack leaves a residue on ‘some’ paints (AK lacquer I had issues with) but the white tack was ok…? Cheers.

Great result with the SEA scheme…I’ve just finished a Skyraider in same….I used ‘white tack’ (poster adhesive here in Australia) rolled into sausages with the other side of the edge masked off….bit time consuming but great result….I think you’ve convinced me to do an F4 now, yours looks great…cheers Mick!

I think you need to upgrade from coffee to scotch, ending up with a nice single malt. I love a beer or scotch when I am modelling in the evening. The model is looking great.

Enjoy the young’ns. You’re going to miss having them around. If you’re interested I’ll send you some IJN color mixes for Tamiya. One more thing…please tell us what flat you end up using. Once I get a gloss like,that I end up having a bear of a time getting anything duller than semigloss, even using Dullcote.

I’ll use Tamiya flat clear next in order to apply oil paint and I’ll finish it with Windsor and Newton flat clear

I love watching the paint go down. I am trying to improve my ability to get soft edges between the colors. It takes a lot of practice to control the fade and not get a hot spot. I think its called that when it goes too dark from excess paint?? Then it looks like crap. Have you ever tried MRP Mr Paint lacquers? They are pre-thinned and have the exact FS colors for the SEA camo.

@seanerk5kt9 Cafe Bustelo isn't very expensive. It's a Cuban ground coffee. Very strong. I think they offer it in K cups too. Anyways, keep up the good work! I love your channel. ❤️

before you do your painting, do you lay out your pattern, or do you just trace your pattern out first before you lay down your putty? Ive been thinking of laying out a camo pattern with a pencil, laying out the putty on top of the pencil marks and cleaning the marks up after that first layer of paint. I know others just cut paper out or use frisket, but that all seems to be a huge pain in the ass. Im building a few TAKOM AH-64 apache kits and Id like to use them to experiment camo patterns on.
