Many chimneys have a "fire arrester". It's a fine mesh screen mounted on the chimney to avoid birds, squirrels, leaves, and miscellaneous from entry. The purpose is to avoid fire, ashes, and cinders from exiting the chimney and causing a roof fire. This may not have been installed but is building code in many states. I would look in to having one installed.

Same thing happened to my neighbor once. They had started a fire and all of the sudden hundreds of flaming birds were flying in and out of the chimney trying to save their young. It was a horribly gruesome scene but it was still an epic sight to behold.

They're Chimney Swifts. They migrate up from the Amazon every spring, then return in the fall. They trek over 5,000 miles to make their journey. They can also spend months in the air without ever coming down: eating, mating and even sleeping. They make their nests in chimneys using twigs and saliva. They look like flying cigars. They're very cute 😍
