Old cars had no tensioner, you would push the alternator with a prybar by feel and tighten up. This is a real PITA.

I currently have a 2003 and a 2005 Ford model and I'm not giving those vehicles up for anything. Also had an '87 Mustang GT 5.0 and a '97 Thunderbird 4.6. All those cars had one simple serpentine belt which took care of ALL the accessories. I really miss those cars. So easy to work on. That's why I'm not letting go of the '03 or the '05.

Ford is notorious for doing lil shit things to make it fun to work on. Earliest I remember is with the 9 inch differential housing where on the last bottom bolt you cannot use a socket, you have to use a box wrench and it slows you down. Recently, the 2.7 ecoboost engines have the weeping oil pan but you can’t simply just pull the pan off. You have to completely remove the transmission cooler lines because they are hell bent in the way purposely to slow you down in removing and replacing the oil pan. The transmission cooler lines could have been further away from the block as there is plenty of room but some engineer thought it be funny to be slick and make it harder for mechanics.

I need to do this instillation with the engine in the car. I assume turning this pulley wont do any damage while in park? I know people turn over the motors using a ratchet on older cars all the time but I just wanted to make sure since newer vehicles can be strange.

What if you took off the water pump pulley, put the belt on the others and then put the pump pulley back in, bolt by bolt? Would it even be possible in that order?
@FordBossMe3 жыл бұрын
No I really don't think so because it's so tight you would never be able to get the bolt-hole to line back up and think about doing that in the vehicle let alone me doing it here on this and it won't work

It's just as easy to grab a pair of pliers grab the harmonic balancer rotate the harmonic balancer while holding the pair of pliers and just run the belt right up on over it just like I did here and it's the best way to do it

This is not the correct way to replace the belt. I verified what @Danikevd stated. You just take the two top bolts off the alternator then losen the lower bolt. The alternator swivels down. It took 1 minute to remove the belt and 5 to replace it. I used a strap to align the alternator back up.
