This video is really all about trying to get the best possible results and outcome for a small stone chip, for those of you that have a little experience under you’re belt. However if you’ve never touched up, sanded or corrected automotive paint in the past, this really isn’t the best starting paint, as there is a learning curve we all need to go through before getting to this stage. The best way to safely buildup your skill set is to grab a cheap car panel from a car wreckers and use that to practice on before attempting it on your beloved car!

Thanks for making this video! Question though.. When painting, if I go outside of the chipped area a tiny bit, should I sand lightly to remove the paint or just continue with the process? It’s difficult to stay perfectly inside the area missing paint so I’m curious what you do if you end up going outside a tiny bit.
@CarCraftAutoDetailing

I’d use some thinners to gently wipe it off an start again. Unless the paint is too thin, it really should sit inside the chip as long as you just dab the paint into the chip.

I subscribed because of the honesty in your video. I'm a DIY mechanic and have done a little "make it acceptable" paint correction, recently bought a (factory) new yellow car, and it got a stone chip. The part where you said "It will never be perfect" and admitted you don't always do this either, made me realise, that I'm just going to do a basic touch up with cleaning, base coat and clear coat, and not bother wet sanding, as it will have me need to re-polish a 2 week old car. Not worth the effort. It can get this treatment, and then a yearly polish if I'm not satisfied. Thanks for the honesty.

You see your problem was you weren't quite holding your mouth right and you were breathing on the offbeat, otherwise you would have had an F430 with a manual transmission, in Ferrari red no less. We just can't seem to get you kids to get it right. Oh well, maybe on your next pass. Wear these, 🕶, and at least you'll look cool until you get it right. Use extreme caution if using lacquer thinner. I accidentally got 2 smudges on my 2016 jaguar ftype ammonite grey paint and it dulled my car paint. It seeped past my clear coat and modified my paint. I have to now find a way to correct this by spray painting the smudges. They look worse than the repaired paint chips and are larger in size. Just skip the lacquer thinner completely and use something else if you dont want to deal with the risk

Amen... I can’t imagine buying a car, $100 or $100K, and not driving it. Seems more than a bit douchey to have a true ‘performance car’ only to have it be a garage queen. Enzo would’ve been glad too ‘sell it’ to you, but he’d probably not respect you if you didn’t get it on the road.

You can focus your sanding by using a hole punch and crazy gluing it to a pencil eraser. This allows you to roll the pencil between your hands and avoid sanding off more of the clear coat than necessary.

Great video. Based on your tutorials, I did my 17' Range Rover Sport, in Cassin Grey. Prepped 30 spots or so, and a couple door dings, in about four hours. Prepped paint with 4/6 Sonax compound, isopropyl wipe down. Marked spots with small post-it stickers, so as not to contaminate spots with wax pen. Sanded with 2000 grit paper initially. but only in 1/2" circles. Cleaned chips with "farmers reducer", a bodyshop thinner on q-tips. Applied 4 coats OEM touch up paint, and 4-6 coats of OEM clear, with a 1mm artists brush($2). Following weekend, sanded with 2500 & 4000 grit, wet paper. Iso wipe, Sonax 4/6, compound again, and then did entire car with Chemical Guys V38 final compound, two coats Jet Seal, and four coats Zymol Carbon paste. All machine applied with a Festool rotax 125 RO, Griots orange pads on compound, red pads for polish, black pads for wax. Distilled water rinse and microfiber hand buff. All done, I spend about $300 on consumables and 20 hours over two weekends. You'd be hard pressed to find the chips now, and I'm over the moon about the results. I caught my boss touching my car in the office parking lot. said it felt like "wet", lol. Thanks so much for the videos. One of the only zero-hype, zero brand fan-boy channels on here, with solid techniques.

just do like nascar and call a bunch of sponsors. they will pay you to put their decals right over those chips. if you go far enough they will completely body wrap it in whatever color you want. if it stands up to 200 mph, car parts thrown at it, then its gotta be the real deal. im gonna buy windshield tear offs. when it gets screwed up just grab the tab and rip it off and voila a new windshield.

@@jakefromstatefarm9721because he paid someone 50$ in a parking lot to put paint in his rock chips and thought he was going to get body shop results. He doesn’t realize “THE RIGHT WAY” would be minimum 250$ -500$ depending on the amount of chips. I’m a painter but I use to do bumper welding and “touch ups” no one ever wanted to pay for it to be done right. They just wanted some paint in it. So I realized I could fix and sell a lot more rock chips at 100$ the wrong way then I can the right way. I can hide them for 100$ or make them disappear for 700$ guess what they choose.. every time.. 100$. Because if I’m going to sand and buff and polish. I may as well paint and have a PERMANENT fix.

I work in paint for one of the big 3, we get chips like this straight out of a brand new paint job from the oven, we do a similar method, but use toothpicks, but..we have 30 seconds to do each touch up, all while on a moving line lol, it's tricky.

Yeah man, this is how you do it. And its explained in a manner so that even a novice can get the same results (given the right tools and PATIENCE) I would like to stress that to "APPLY NO PRESSURE against the surface while sanding" is of utmost importance let the sandingpaper do ALL the work. You did mention it, but it cannot be stressed enough to the inexperienced.

Great video Sandro. This is without a doubt, the best "touch up" work on rock chips I have ever seen done outside of a professional respray. Also the most outstanding results in the end by any professional detailer. Thanks for sharing your many years of experience with us enthusiasts out here in the world. I have to fix about six or eight rock chips on my red Nissan 370Z which also has very soft paint. After viewing this video it gave me a more in depth understanding of how to approach doing a more professional job on my chips. If my repair looks half as good as yours, I would be totally thrilled. Fortunately I have a Flex PXE-80 which hopefully will assist in achieving some great finishing results. I just have to pick up a few of those small 1" sanding disc's and a few of those finger sanding blocks in various grades. Thanks again for this great information and demonstration/tutorial! I've said it before and I will say it again, you are one of the BEST expert/master detailers on this entire planet! They should give you an Honorary PHD in Automotive Detailing! Dr. Sandro. Labour is really expensive where I live. Do you reckon if that’s the case then painting the whole panel might work out cheaper or the same price? If it’s the same price you’d prefer that I guess

If you don't mind, may I add a comment from experience? I'm assuming you said yes ... double check your touch up paint color somewhere inconspicuous and make sure that they are absolutely identical to your car's color otherwise they'll Stand Out worse than the chips did. Even if the tint is a little off. I had that happen once on a black car, and boy did they stand out. If you hadn't already thought of it or somebody already told you then hopefully that is useful. Best of luck with it.

I'm afraid I might rub through the clear coat, but I'm going to give it a try anyway on a spot least conspicuous. If all goes well, I'll tackle the remaining chips. Thanks for the expert tips.

Michael Butler i would imagine using 3000 or 4000 grit paper soaking in water shouldn’t rub though the clear. But i guess its possible. I would use the 4000 and sand only enough to fix the damaged area. But he makes seem so easy.

Great video: You explain just how complicated this really is. So many steps. Some of us are lucky that we don't drive old Ferrari's....I have a 2012 Infiniti G37xS Coupe in Red and I was able to purchase a touch up pen with real paint and not the water based crap that they sell at the stealership. The paint pen has regular paint on one end and clear at the other and are felt marker style. The front portion of my hood and some parts of the car including the mirrors are covered with the 3M clear cover. So my chips are on the rubber/plastic bumper. I use a fine paint brush too...after I've thoroughly cleaned the car I make note of the chips. I shake the pen to make sure that the paint is consistent in thickness. Then I dab a bit of paint on a small plastic plate and then soak the paint brush in the paint and apply a small amount of the paint in to the chip. I wait for it to dry as these types of touch up paint pens dry faster than body shop paint. Then I apply a small amount of clear coat. If you apply just the proper amount of both paint and clear the paint will fill the crack and just a bit of mild quick detailer hand polish with a microfibre a day later after the paint has cured and hardened will blend everything in. I use Meguiars Ultimate Quick Detailer with a quality microfibre cloth in a vertical followed by a horizontal motion to prevent any kind of swirl mark. I'm my case I'm too chicken to sand anything. But I can tell you that after a week later if I still see any uneven paint from the touch up job, I can do a machine polish and the results are amazing too. Sometimes after I wash the car I use a q-tip dabbed in alcohol to clean the chip. While I have your attention I also recommend using the 3M clear cover on your headlight lenses to prevent oxidation and pitting and a proper car cover if you like to leave your car outside in the summer. (Actually 3M clear plastic is a rubberized version of clear coat!) I can't stress enough how this actually saves you so much trouble. Thanks for a great video! Cheers from Montreal, Canada!

I had a chip on my car that needed repair. Most videos show people dabbing the chip with a brush or a paint stick and that’s it. Though the chip is filled, the repair looks awful. I followed your steps on my car and I have to say the chip is gone. I was lucky my paint touch up matched, but without your steps it would never look as good. The trick is go slo and take your time. Great video. Thanks again!!!!

Just done my Honda Stream RS-Z in Cool Umber Metallic. I thought it was a so-so color at first, a few chips, less than the Ferrari and this is a daily Honda! Now after a good decontamination and clay bar and all chips filled, a good cut, polish and ceramic coating, wow! The metallic really sparkles under the light it has so much depth, color and shine it is astonishing it looks almost new. Really its a 10 year old car. Spent 2 full days when you add up the hours put in over a few days. Worth it; it looks better than the day I got it.

You confirmed what I was thinking about this technique. I just bought a used car and did redo all the “corrections” from the garage by myself. They applied touch pen as peanut butter while I followed your technique. It’s not that time consuming for me, even if I can understand this process costs money for the garage. But they are supposed to be pro... Anyway I did not pay for that previous job so I tried your steps carefully and I could get a wonderful job on a black sapphire paint. It is neat, I’m impressed myself! Big thanks! 🙏

The biggest mistake I see, and it's very hard to avoid, is making a slight low spot in the clear around the chip. The darker the color, the more obvious the dip. To avoid this, I use an old painters trick. After you build up the chip area with clear and it cures, apply body filler to the area using the built up clear as your highest spot and tapering out to your sanding limit. Block down the filler and built up clear until you are just back down to the base clear. This will prevent you from creating a small wave in the clear.
