I'm a 42 year old black guy. I love you channel. My neighbor is a 68 year old white guy. We talk maybe 3 times in 3 years. He walked over 2 days ago to ask me a question. During an exchange I said, "I'll be dipped." His eyes got big, and he explodes with, "I watch Derek every day! I check every day for a new release." Keep doing what you do, we enjoy your show here in Talladega, Alabama.

I was really tight with my Dad. We did everything together: boats, cars, motorcycles, model airplanes, model trains, and the list goes on. It makes me so happy to see that kind of relationship with you and Bentley. Ive told you this before and I’ll say it again, that young man loves you and loves being with you. You can’t buy that with any amount of money. I’m 63 and I miss my father every single day.

@@DubsStop a strange place that comes complete with a Jailbar Ford that we all wish Derek actually had. I love seeing what he does to the place, and he doesn't post often. It's a bit like visiting my Dad's cousin who married a dairy farmer. Every couple of months we'd drive out from the city to the country, and see what they'd done to the farm. They'd do the most exciting stuff a 10 year old city kid could do. Weld broken gates, drive tractors to feed cows, milk cows, feed poddies, irrigate paddocks. Actually they got a lot of work out of us kids and I don't regret any of it.

I agree. Best memories are me pops and gramps in a old Ford econoline van roadtrpping through the desert and going to Bodie in 1973. Wild burros eating my dads cigars, the abandoned town, the huge rattlesnake cruising down the road. We camped down the old road next to a spring fed stream, nothing like the desert sky at night. There is another mining camp that, if I remember right was called San Andreas or something like that. Cool place. Hiking around we found arrow heads, old whiskey bottles and all sorts of cool stuff even an old broke open safe in a gully. We panned and found gold, I swear my pops had the midas touch, he found more gold than anyone. He taught me to always look at the ground and survey your surroundings, you never know what may be there just waiting to be discovered.

Brother, this is one of the best trips a person could ever embark on, and to take your son along with you is just wonderful! Its almost become a forgotten journey to people-especially young people. I remember taking watching the movie "CARS" with my son Jacob and how much truth the (cartoon movie) displayed about how the old highway has been left behind; the same with Doc Hudson going from Champion to "has been." The only thing that stays the same is change, and the only thing that lasts forever is the Love a person gives! Thats why your son will remember this trip forever and such a wonderful gift to give from you; I think every person should take a cruise down the "mother road" at least once in their lifetime...the shift in perspective from it would be enlightening for anyone who does. If I weren't so slammed with work at the moment I would help you swap that T400 out overnight at my shop "MidnightOils Restoration" so you wouldn't miss a beat, especially since you will be going right by here on your way down route 66 where I live in Claremore, Oklahoma! Maybe, the next time you come through here you'll have time to stop in brother. Myself and all the hot rod community appreciate what you're doing I can assure you! I love how you are taking Bentley on this trip, he will remember these thing's as he grows up, and can say my dad is the best dad in this world. Awesome that people were kind enough to offer their help, great car community. Bentley smiling at you, and also wanting cowboy bootz like you is cool. Give that little grip garage fella a hug from an old girl in michigan. GOD bless and keep you safe.

Got a couple pennies together and bought a rebuild kit and done my first auto transmiser rebuild. No clue what i where doing but i done it, lasted a year fore it smoked again. Had couple dollars that time, had it done proper at trans shop. Had that old beast 28 years now, on its 4th transmission.

The trips with your boys will be your best memories. My last rode trip I made with my son was taking him to his first duty station at Fort Leninworh Kansas. His graduation present was a 1972 Buick skylark. I have the original bumper jack and hub caps in my shed every time I look at them I SMILE. Enjoy all these times they grow up to fast.

Fuel is so cheap in US. In England, we currently pay £1.83 per litre. So £9.15 ($11.26) a gallon. Your 1600 mile trip at 10mpg would cost us £1464. ($1735.50) Smashing video Derek. Thank you for being a smile in an otherwise gloomy world. You are appreciated 💛

My dad used to take my sister and I on long road trips most summers. We drove to California from south Texas one summer. We hit all the cool stuff along the way. Great memories. My dad was diagnosed with dementia about 3 years ago. It advanced super fast. He doesn't remember who my sister and I are anymore, let alone the road trips. But, even if he can't remember these road trips and all the stories, my sister and I can. And I will always cherish those trips.

So sorry for your personal situation, just remember that y'all are not alone. Try and play your Dad some of his fondest music when you can, because they sometimes respond to the "old tunes" from their young days. It's only temporary, but it's a blessing if they respond. Stay well, stay strong my friend!

Old alignments are best when doing the Old Mother Road. The freeway misses so much of the experience. The point is not just to make the distance, it's to discover old timey, small town, 'Murica! I had a blast following the oldest route I could find when I did it in 2015. Outstanding trip!

My Grandpa had a `77 Camper Special with the dual tanks, 454, 2 tone paint(brown & yellow or tan, I don`t know!). Seeing this rig brings back some great memories. He always said it got 10.5 mpg, whether he was towing the camper or boat or nothing at all. My Uncle still has that truck. I wonder...
