Just roaming through Utube and found this lovely video. HMS Harvester was the ship that my Dad's brother was on during the 2nd WW. He was 19 years old when she was sunk in the Atlantic ocean whilst on convoy duty. Lovely model of part of my family history. Thank you

Excellent work! Loved the explanations, they were really helpful. Just two ultra minor nitpicks: 1) Ships underway fly the colours on the mast, the jack is lowered immediately when a ship leaves anchor. 2) When warships are about to use cannons or torpedoes the railings around the mounts are brought down.

One of the hardest things to convey in naval ship modeling, is something unique to naval vessels. That they have, onboard, and entire staff whose job it is to prevent and repair rust and weathering. There is an all too-common "sin" among casual ship modelers to depict them as if they'd spent the last 2 or 3 years on the Russian Front. Most ships have, at most, supplies for 4 to 6 weeks, and then spend time in port not only re-stocking but also painting and repairing things, and from the waterline up. (Too few realize there is a fully-stocked Paint Locker to this end.) On a Destroyer, there might only be 40-60 men in the Deck Department, their Department Head and the Executive Officer will see to it that they have daily employment. And, of course, 1/700 just makes all this about 2 orders of magnitude harder to model.

Awesome build! Still can’t believe the size of the box though.....I’m thinking someone of the boxing line is now trying to squash a 1:350 scale boat into a box designed for your kit! Loved the base. I’ve been trying to work out the easiest way to make wave and gloss gel might be the way. Thanks so much for sharing this with us and looking fora]ward to the next riveting episode!
@lpjmodels3 жыл бұрын
Thankyou Andy :) , the gel was the best I had to add texture really, I might have sculpted the waveforms out of something stiffer before paint first just to get the basic shapes down. The bonus and the downside of the gel is it self levels quite well, not to completely flat but any edges around the blobs will smooth out. And that didn't help so much with the crests. But I think it works better than foil so far. More natural. Thanks for the support mate !

Great build James, I love the paint job! I have a 1/700 King George V underway and was going to build a diorama using a different technique but have decided to give your method a try. One question for you ... you mentioned that the watercolour paper didn't provide the texture you wanted so if you were doing one again would you use something else, for example heavy card, and then create the wave effects using gloss medium as you've done here? I'm thinking of substituting heavy card for watercolour paper and gloss medium for acrylic binder. Thanks!
@lpjmodels3 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve ! As long as you have a medium that's got enough body ( and self levelling ability) to sculpt a little you'll be alright, as for the base material a stiff piece of card would be fine , it would still need to be sealed in though, the benefit to a card or paper is it has a lot more grip for the gel e.t.c to attach to . For the next one I'm going to experiment with sculpting the base waveforms out of clay and then using get for mini texture and gloss ( it's tremendously glossy ). The foil technique was on the radar initially but It didn't look organic or natural enough in the end
@steveclifford34933 жыл бұрын
@@lpjmodels Thanks James. I've started experimenting with a small piece of 2mm card and heavy / super heavy gloss gels ... we'll see how it goes. I've used the foil technique twice and it tends to work ok if you're modelling very rough seas. I look forward to seeing the clay technique! Thanks again.
