JAVANESE refers to etnic from the "central" and "east" part of Java island (Central Java province, DI Yogyakarta province, and East Java province). While in the "west" part of Java island (DKI Jakarta province, West Java province, and Banten province), there are 2 etnics called BETAWI (derived from word Batavia) and SUNDANESE.
@fatmodjo2 жыл бұрын
In Indonesia generally, Javanese is for central java and east Java. For the west Java they will be recognized as Sundanese. For the Jakarta, They're Jakarta's people but if they are Betawi's ethnic they want to be known as Betawi's people.
@tomlandry26812 жыл бұрын
Risoles is a traditional Dutch snack. The one you ate is a modified Indies version. The term Betawi is actually how the locals back in the days refer to indigenous Batavians which you described pretty well - a melting pot of different cultures in Batavia. This video seems to emphasize more to remnants of Batavia rather than its Chinatown. Risoles, colonial architecture, Batavian soto.. You’ve done your homework. Well done.

It’s really nice that whenever you visited a place you learn so thoroughly everything about that place, the history, the people, the culture and the way you appreciate everything about that place. It’s really wonderful to appreaciate every culture like you do. Greetings from Surabaya. I saw your videos in Surabaya, I hope you visited Pasar Atom if you had the chance to come here again next time. It’s like a Chinese old mall which most baby-boomer Chinese Indonesians love to go to find everything, and surely the food there is amazing Chinese-Indonesian foods and snacks at affordable prices.

14:43 what you eat was risoles. A rissole (from Latin russeolus, meaning reddish, via French in which "rissoler" means "to redden"). It's kind of croquette brought by the Dutch to Indonesia.

If you want to know a modern Dutch history 1800s till 1900s go to Bandung. There are a lot of art deco Dutch building there, because that city was meant to be new Dutch east indies capital until the Japanese came and ww2 broke out. And if you want any old Dutch city again go to Semarang, Surakarta, Salatiga and Yogyakarta.
@imugibyam2 жыл бұрын
Risoles or rissole originally from France. I think got into indonesia via the Dutch. While lumpia/lunpia (aka. spring roll in the US mostly) is originally Chinese. And if u go to Holland you will find it as lumpia there also, influenced by their colonial time in Indonesia.

answers to quick questions: maybe if ordinary people think that people born in Jakarta are Javanese, that's true in fact, but this is what makes Indonesia so diverse, Javanese people are more precisely the term for Central Javanese people who they use Javanese language in their daily life, what if they are in West java, East Java, or maybe in Banten Province? no, it's not appropriate to call them Javanese. For example, in West Java they are called Sundanese, in Jakarta they are called Betawi people and Banten, they are called Baduy people. this is Indonesia with all its diversity nick. thank u for always exploring my country!!

16:50 Ondel ondel doesn't represent Jakarta people. It actually represent a mystic creature. In Betawi culture, it's believed that Ondel ondel could give luck and protection. But now, it's just a decoration and part of celebration and cultural ceremony, but I'm sure some people still believe it in mystical way.

Dear Nick There is a River flowing where you were (at Toko Merah).. Actually in the old time / Dutch period, it was designed by the Dutch to remind them the street in Holland. When they felt homesick, they visit that area. There used to be a bridge that could be lifted near the sluice gate to the old port of Sunda Kelapa, called Jembatan Kota Intan (Diamond City Bridge) Soto: They usually put some fried onion on top of the steamed rice to produce a special taste and fragrance to it. They also provide free ACAR (cucumber, carrot and chilly soaked into vinegar & sugar) Pasar Pagi lama (Old pasar pagi): The area where you have your soto called Pasar Pagi lama. It has to be the cheapest stores who act as a whole seller for Office Equipment and other enquiries (decorative flowers, various need for sewing, etc) Ruko (shop house) : The area you passed and asked about the room has many Ruko (Shop Houses). In the old time, the standard of its size was 4 meters wide, with different length. The man told you was 'Risoles'. It is made of dough of flour, eggs and other mixtures filled with chicken or beef, as well as vegetables.
