If you wonder why they threw aome of the planks onto the other side of the fence: When you cut logs to planks, one side of the plank has been closer to the center of the log. When building a surface out of wood, you should not mix the orientation of planks. Preferably the side of the plank from closer to the center of the log should go "against the weather". So the planks they threw to the other side were in wrong orientation and thus were supposed to go to the other side of the wall. Disclaimer: This is a joke, probably those planks were just of inferior quality or something. But you should still mind the grain of the wood when building stuff.

Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. The jig, the nail pattern ensuring accuracy, the efficiency.. just so many small things screams "This dude knows whats up!" I absolutely love all of this. For those who do not understand everything or even realize what you are seeing and why I will try to point out some small yet amazing things that make this awesome. First thing is how the first 2 nails shot are on 2 different boards. This creates a constant rhythm for the nail gun worker. The first nail goes in the top left of the newest board. The second nail is the 6th and final nail in the previous board. Shooting a single nail in the newest board is so useful because it not only supports the newest board to maintain the height it also allows for that board to pivet on that single nail to ensure the bottom is properly pulled over next to the previous board before putting a second nail in that board which finalizes its position. This is briefly shown once near the end of the short, and that is the fact that the jig (old board at the top) is not secured to the fence in any way allowing it to slide across the top of the fence. This can be accomplished in a few different ways, all of which work the same. The main benefit is a constant hard surface guide that doesnt flex like a string would ensuring a clean crisp top line. This also means the fence will not have unnecessary holes in the face of the fence etc. Finally the tossing the bad boards on the opposite side of the fence simply shows he did not hand pick his wood at the lumber store leaving only shit wood behind he planned and accounted for a % of the fence boards to be a waste meaning he could toss the less than desirable board carelessly instead of trying to use them and install a lower quality fence that will look terrible a lot sooner than it should. All in all a couple things could have been added to the process as additional quality measures however this installation is already extremely efficient, with really good quality control. Absolute approval!!

What is this “JIG” everyone in the comments seems to be so excited about? 😁 Is it the darker board at the top of the fence? I may wrongfully assume that it’s a part of the project, just differently colored to maybe look cool? 2. Why is the talented gentleman with the nail gun placing the middle & bottom 4 nails, left to right, & the top 2 nails, top to bottom? Is this some trick or hack that helps with something? Or does the placement of the nails not matter, so long as the boards are held tightly to the back of the fence? Thank you so much in advance to whomever kindly answers. 🙏🏽 I really appreciate it.

I got out of residential work because customers do not have a clue. Just like alot of the comments people leave. People please understand that new lumber has water in it, and as it dries out it will shrink and gap. The boards he is tossing are cracked or broken in a way that will show up later when said wood is dry. And there is no need to check plumb more than every 10 feet or so, if your posts are plumb you can eyeball them as you get close to one. Guys that do this for a living make it look like they are just throwing it up but I guarantee there’s way more to it than any of you norm villa wannabes imagine.

Check level when coming up to a post. If you have a big gap you can hide it behind the post to get back to level. I've used a bump board for years. Mine is about 40", works good for slopes. On a steep hill I'll move it every board to maintain my 6" picket height above top rail. God bless.

Shouldn't there be a space for expansion and so it's not a complete barrier when the wind blows?

They will shrink. Thanks for watching

Why did the top 2 get stabbed on the left side vertically, and the middle and bottom spread evenly? On every board.

He hits the top when he comes back up. Thanks for watching.

Even seeing a lot of these fence vids but none of them putting any gaps between planks for expansion. Is there something new going on that I havent heard of preventing the wood from swelling?
@Justalittleoutoftown7 ай бұрын
Most if not all the fence pickets are fresh cut lumber. They haven’t had time to dry and shrink. They shrink after installing. Thanks for the comment and for watching😁

Is there something in the jig acting as a spacer or are you just butting them up against one another without leaving a space for expansion and contraction?
@Justalittleoutoftown7 ай бұрын
They are new boards they will shrink. Thanks for watching.

Is the jig you’re using something you came up with, or is it common to contractors? I’ve never seen this thing before but looks slick. 😗👌🏼

We use redwood more than cedar on the wacky left coast and it’s often so wet you sometimes get water in the face when nailing planks. It’ll shrink a fair bit and then some. For those saying you wouldn’t use wet would then you won’t get a fence either. It’s really hard to get anything even clear anymore.

I agree with that we use the western red cedar. I think they ship ours from Washington. Thanks for watching.
