1 Acre Horse Fence: Episode #5: Finish Work

In this video we wrap up the 4 board horse fence project by cutting 110 post tops and sealing the ends with some black lacquer. We also stained/sealed the boards with Cabot Australian Timber Oil - Natural color, to help preserve the wood better but also mainly for aesthetics. I love the two tone look of natural cedar over black.

Besides the look, why do you recommend the face boards? Just curious because I am not familiar with it.

@@FromScratchRanch faceboards add structural integrity to your whole fence protect and keep the horizontal fence boards from warping twisting and cupping on the ends.

those short post you cut would be perfect to spruce up along your driveway. set them in the ground and put reflectors on them

Are the posts on the inside of pasture for some parts of the fence line and outside for other sections?

Yes, they are on the outside for aesthetic purposes only. Not ideal since the animals can and do push against the fence. With the post on the outside, when the fence is pushed on, the boards have the post to help resist the animals weight of pushing. When the post are on the inside of the fence, all the boards have to hold them in place is the screws. Ideally, all fencing should have the post on the outside no matter if it’s a wire or board construction. It’s just not as pleasing to the eyes.
