Not sure why people are complaining. These videos are great. Love the way the scales were presented with how to figure out the sharps and flats by writing them out like that with the problem solving. Thank you! Adding this to my theory playlist. Can't afford a small french fries let alone the masterclass, but thank you for doing these videos. Love the joking around.

Steve is an awesome teacher, I really connect with the way he teaches. I picked up a guitar 10 years ago at the age of 40 because I always wanted to learn to play. I have never really had formal lessons and I can only play some chords and strum a couple of patterns. I come from no musical background whatsoever and never understood why or how scales are constructed. Now after two videos I understand major scales, I can't wait for the next video! Thank you!

I’ve had so many “aha moments” watching Steve Stine over the years. Love his very logical approach. Can’t believe I actually made a living playing guitar in my younger days without what I know now about music theory. Mainly thanks to Steve’s methodology. Many thanks, Steve!

I've played mostly Open chords stuff for years I was happy just to play my guitar and sing. After years of not progressing with my music I decided to really focus at learning the Theory, scales and all the other building blocks needed to be a more rounded musician! I really appreciate the work you guys are doing in sharing these amazing lessons, keep up the great work and thank you!

Djentlemen.. I've been playing for 15 or so years. Only learning tabs. I've always thought learning theory would be too much, and take the fun out of the instrument. Man, was I wrong. These two lessons that I've watched so far have been eye opening. I can navigate with confidence, and ease. You guys are great at sharing the information in a way that is easy to grasp. Well done. And seriously, many thanks. I can't wait to get through 3, and 4.

This is soooo solid!!!! I've been playing for 13 years and bobbed and weaved my way around theory because I just wanted to play without reading the instructions so to speak. Finally reached to point where I cannot advance until get these gaps filled. The break down of this is helping me realize how I have been using it but not knowing I was. This is is just what I needed. I have been playing with some professional musicians and always felt unconfident with speaking theory or getting into transpositions discussions with them. I would more so just play it by ear. This helps more then you know.

Thank you for all the effort you both put on this workshops. I would like to say that the first time I heard Steve explaining the Major Scale as a set of 7 notes + the Octave, always with a halfstep between the 3rd & 4th and 7th-(Octave), all this stuff made sense to me. Even minors Scales or Modes, building all them as two sets of four notes with a "moveable" half step in each set.

OMG. For years I've known the principle of WWHWWWH in scales but never understood the scale tones until watching this. The 3-4 and 7-8 half step has just turned on a light. I can now work out all major scales in my head. Steve you are a genius at explaining in simple terms to understand the theory of scales. Thank you so much. Hey Steve - thanks for these lessons - have been listening to the podcast version while recovering from an eye operation... I hae been playing guitar for nearly 40 years and have a reasonable grasp of basic theory, but this just created an 'AHA' moment as I had never really considered why notes sometimes get a flat instead of a sharp but this explanation nailed it perfectly! Every day is a school day...

These lessons are outstanding. I'm a non-musician. I've wanted to play guitar my whole life. Except for a bit of fiddling around when I was a kid, I've never gotten very far, mainly because I thought true musical understanding was an innate talent that I just didn't have. These lessons give me hope. I REALLY appreciate Steve's systematic, logical, step-wise presentation of the concepts AS WELL AS Dan's reassurance and encouragement.

hey Steve I watched a video of you playing "the devil went down to Georgia" and if you ever hear the metal version of steve oimette right when they are soloing on the 2nd verse the bass line loops towards the end. ive been wondering and looking everywhere for a tectinal approach but I cant find it. what I want to know is. What do you call that bassline. why does the bassline loops along the drumbeat. the same is in the song light my fire by the doors. when the solo hits the bassline loops. another example. "let there be rock" the bassline just loops through out. but unlike other songs the bass fallows the guitarist.

This is awesome Steve and Dan but my head exploded when I tried to follow your process for writing out all the major scales and came to F#. After putting my brain back together I goggled it and found that you would include a E# when writing it out. There's always and exception to the rules. I know that E# is actually an F but it screwed me up sticking to the formula.

So. I'm curious about songs I've played in the past that are purposefully labeled as Db. Should it not be C# according to theory? Or if starting in something like Db, are we no longer following the rules of the major scale?
@lorneturner5318
@lorneturner5318 4 жыл бұрын
I think that would depend on the key you are in...C# and Db are indeed the same note but are assigned to the key being played...

If you started writing out the najor scale starting with C#, the next note is D# then another tone, whole note step is F..then semitone is F"...you get two F and F" in the key but no E. That is a problem to denote on sheet music key signature. The alternative is to use Gb instead of F# but then you still have no E and a sharp (C#) and flat (Gb) in the same key signature. It's messy...that is why this major key is always shown as Db...Db Eb F Gb Ab Bb C (Db)

Glen, sorry for missing your question when you posted it a while back. Just to get everybody on the same page, C# and Db ("C sharp" and "D flat") are enharmonic, which means they are the same note. (Other enharmonics are D#/Eb, F#/Gb, G#/Ab, and A#/Bb.) To understand why sometimes it's a C# and sometimes it's a Db, just remember this: Every diatonic (7-note) scale MUST have one of each letter. And ONLY one of each letter. Let's just go through a couple examples. First, let's just start with the C major scale, even though it doesn't have any sharps or flats: C - D - E - F - G - A - B The C major scale has got one (and only one) of each letter. But there are no sharps or flats, so let's move on to the D major scale: D - E - F# - G - A - B - C# As you can see, there are 2 sharps (F# and C#). Both of those notes have enharmonic equivalents (Gb and Db), but we don't call them "Gb and Db" if we're in the key of D. Why not? Well, if we did, the D major scale would look like this: D - E - Gb - G - A - B - Db And that leaves us with 2 Gs but no F, and with 2 Ds but no C. And every diatonic scale needs one (and only one) of each of the 7 letters used in music. So, to answer your question, enharmonic notes are written differently, depending on what key the song is in. Hope this helps! -- GuitarZoom Staff

Do it the English way. Don't say Whole-Step, Half-Step, say Tone, Semi-tone instead. The major scale immediately becomes much less of a mouthful and easier to remember. Tone, Tone, Semi-tone, Tone, Tone, Tone, Semi-tone. Try it.
