Steve, this video changed my guitar playing life. Once I watched it, I knew that I had to address this hole in my playing. I never memorized the entire fretboard. I already knew that it was holding me back. I had even tried before. This video gave me a plan and showed me I had time to get it done. The quarantine gave me time! "It doesn't matter how long it takes" was the key to it all, just do it. So over the last month, I have practiced this daily. It's still a work in progress but I am already reaping the benefits. As a side exercise I memorized the chord form that goes with each note on each string. Double bonus! I have a new visualization of the fretboard and it is so powerful.

Steve- You have probably heard this 1M times but I want to tell you, of all the instructors on YT I find your instruction the most impactful. You have a way of presenting the material that makes it understandable. I’ve been playing about a year now and you have taught me a lot! I use your videos to reinforce what my teacher is teaching me. Thanks for doing this series.

i like steves philosophy, if you can visualize the places the notes are on the fret board in your mind, you ompleted that task, now is to apply what Steve taught,, I was writing the fret board down and each note filled notebooks up with this, it got me really nowhere till I learned what Steve taught, amazing, it was a simple solution, but to my mind, wow, ok, that makes sense, I have ADHD trouble focusing!! Now I can sleep, that sounds crazy. but I needed to learn this!! thank you steve!! Man I am eating this upor sucking it up like a sponge!! interesting!!

As a metal guitarist I've never really had to learn this. We kinda learn our style by learning songs growing up. I regret back in music class I didn't pay attention and shrugged this off. What an idiot I was. Now heRE I am 10 years later having to relearn this because I was a young idiot. Kids, pay attention in school. You'll never know when you'll need that skill again in the future. Thanks Steve.

You just made this so simple. Just the little things you mention makes a difference. Like the B and E is BE. And the flats go down like a flat tire. These little words to key on help make it easier to remember. I can now write the entire fretboard down now. Just need to start memorizing the notes position. Hope I can do it in way less that 6 months. Like 6 days would be more like it. Since the top and bottom string are the same I'll have 2 strings down and 4 to go.

i started learning / playing keyboard cuz Steve said "Im not saying to learn the piano". At 61 im still a juvenille diliquent according to last fit for duty eval. BTW I've read a few of the questions here…..Easy Way….. not really a short cut, know your fret board (visualize all) and muscle memory / strengthen fretting hand the things Steve talks about in all courses. I look for a short cuts for everything and found only way is repetition / core practice. Steve has an excellent practice guide called "Ultimate Practice Routine Organizer", its a place to start or start over depending on how many years you have played. you said Fn G again Dude, thanks Steve

I’ve started going from the 12 fret down because I’ve discovered that’s really hard to do. It seems like knowing the seven letters backwards it’s pretty easy, but in practicality, it is not. Even when I don’t have my guitar with me, I’m constantly saying to myself… G F E D C B A. I rotate them too C B A G F E D. Etc… I even do it on paper, and I play games that I downloaded from the App Store. I pay the five dollars or whatever it costs because I feel like these musicians deserve everything we can afford to give them! Also, there are a lot of great teachers on KZbin, but Steve it’s really my favorite and not just because he’s so damn handsome

Another Great Video Steve, I've often wondered if it might be best to learn all the notes by one string at a time, but so many other guys are teaching to do all the C's first, then all the G's then all the D's which is OK I guess, but I find that way confusing, I think learning all the notes on each string first is the best way to go. Maybe later folks can learn where all the C's, G's, D's etc are quickly may help too but as far as note recognition FIRST I like your method here best. Another fine job. Looking forward to your other lessons.

Steve, I have a problem with the word memorize. I taught guitar for years and never used that word. Yo begin with this word implies that it is only short term memory. You keep it until you need it then forget it. The word I used is lesrn because that means to know it forever. I really like your classes but thst is my only beef. By the way I have a mnemonic to learn the order of sharps that I got from a guitar book. Order of sharps Fine Classical Guitarist Demand Accurate Execution Buddy. Buddy was not included in th saying but I added it for B#. For the flsts it was Be Ever Aware During Guitar Class Friend. Sgain I added the friend becsuse it wasn't included in the mnemonic. Keep up the good work. I like the fact that you use everyday language instead of words to hard for students to understand. I learned that right away. To me those words were simple but my students couldn't understand what I was saying.

Instead of a circle of notes, how about visualizing it as a helix with vertical axis signifying octaves
@KevinORourke254 жыл бұрын
I would respectfully disagree with what to learn first. I wish that I had memorized the notes on the fret board first. If I had, I would have understood what notes make up chord for instance. That would have made things a bit clearer when I first began (50 yrs. ago)!
@vyb15164 жыл бұрын
Hi. I am a beginner and are you saying I should learn the notes first on the entire fretboard? Including sharpsand flats?
@theblytonian39064 жыл бұрын
@@vyb1516 Bad advice. Mate if the average beginner attempted that, the 90% who quit within the first year (Fender stats) would quit within the first month, and it'd be 99%. Learn the fretboard yes, but it's *not a priority* starting out, or arguably will be for anyone within their first year of playing except perhaps a savant or prodigy? Learning the fretboard requires a determination and perseverance lacking in most, especially those of today's instant gratification world. Before tackling it, some relevant theory and its practical application really needs to be introduced and experienced first to tie it all together, so that it's meaningful and its purpose can be seen so as to provide the persisting motivation needed for the repetition required. Even though rote is also required, learning guitar is predominantly about assimilation through relating things together. There's no super secret everyone's always searching for like the ever elusive pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. Accelerated leaning curve or not, it just takes time. There's no magic bullet which can compress that.
@theDubleD4 жыл бұрын
@@vyb1516 Nono, you shouldn't just learn it, you should be able to understand it. The Chromatic scale teaches what the basic notes and intervals are.
@KevinORourke254 жыл бұрын
@@theblytonian3906 You know, I neglected to take into consideration the perseverance and determination it takes to stick with the process. Learning chords and songs were what gave that to me now that I think back (way back) on it. I stand corrected and am happy to be so. Thank you. Kevin O'Rourke
@KevinORourke254 жыл бұрын
@@vyb1516 What the Blytonian said in his/her comment is accurate. I'm so old that I forgot what keeps one involved in the process of learning guitar. You have to be excited in the beginning and nothing creates that excitement more than learning a few chords and practicing a song or two. Good Luck.
