Why is acceleration negative 9.8 when the rock is falling down?
@scottsecrest21907 жыл бұрын
Crest Fallen The acceleration of something in free fall is always downward. Since I made up the positive y-direction, the acceleration is negative. Because it is moving down (velocity is in the negative direction too) the object is speeding up. A common misconception is that negative acceleration always means slowing down, but that is not true.

Where did 340 come from? can u explain elaborately?
@scottsecrest21903 жыл бұрын
That was given in the problem - but that is the approximate speed of sound in air at sea level at room temperature. See this link for more explanation: www.physicsclassroom.com/class/sound/Lesson-2/The-Speed-of-Sound or this: www.engineeringtoolbox.com/air-speed-sound-d_603.html or this: hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/Sound/souspe.html or this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speed_of_sound

if you plugged your final time into the other equation, it wouldn't be the exact same answer
@scottsecrest21905 жыл бұрын
It is close (51.694). The only reason it is not exactly the same is because that value for the time is rounded to 5 decimal places, not an exact value. If I kept even more digits, the two equations for the height would give even closer answers.

A stone is dropped into a well it's scrash is heard after 3s. another stone is thrown vertically and it's scrash is heard after 5s. Determine the initial speed of the second stone, if the velocity of a sound is 330 meter per second plzz solve this question
@scottsecrest21906 жыл бұрын
Use the information for the dropped stone to find the depth of the well, just like in this problem. Then, the time for the sound of the splash to reach the top for the second stone is the same as for the first stone, so you know the starting height and the time to reach the bottom of the well (5 seconds minus the time for the sound to reach your ears) and you can use the equation for height as a function of time to solve for the initial velocity, which will be the only unknown.

shouldn't the time be t-3,4 ?
@scottsecrest21908 жыл бұрын
I defined the time to the bottom as t, and the time for the sound to come back up was (3.4 sec) - t. It is the total time minus the time to go down. When I solve for t, that is the time being asked for.
@hussamalshammari47058 жыл бұрын
+Scott Secrest uh i got u, u could also calculate the total time like this Δ Timetot =Δ tdrop +Δ tsound
