Before You Go.
A few suggestions on what to do before you actually head out on the the river and fish one of the many excellent "Passport beats" now available.
If you don't want to listen to me talking the fishing starts at about 5:45

excellent stuff! this is exactly how I like to fish, and echoes my own motivation! " lets just try the next pool up there" when you're already half an hour late!! I wish I could get it across like this! that was a cracking fish, those spots where there's a convergence of currents are always worth a blind cast. Well done 👍

Glorious! I had my first introduction to small welsh streams just the other week and christened my new (four and half foot) furled leader with a beautiful bigger-than-average brown. Thank you.

You're welcome Andy. Sounds like an ideal introduction. And I hope you manage to squeeze in a couple more trips before the season is out. I certainly plan to.

Cracking fishing Luke. And sound advice on Wye and Usk too. You did well to land that beautiful big fish after so much jumping .... got in to a similar one recently that jumped 6 times when hooked before he came off 😀😀. We have had some cracking grayling from main river beats lately.... tight lines! PB from Churchdown

Thank You Phil. The Wye and Usk have got some cracking water and it would be a shame to loose any off it... Must admit that there is always a bit of luck involved with bigger fish in small water... That one got itself around some sunken brambles, but thankfully got itself out as well. Good to hear that the grayling are showing, with luck I'll get up as soon as our lock down finishes.

Wouldn’t want it any other way,finding new water is one of the joys of fishing. All my fishing is done on holiday,within walking distance of the caravan.Sea trout forays on a site next to the Dart between buckfast and Staverton.

I remember the passport system in its infancy Angling 2000,getting that little brochure every year hoping there’d be some new beats to try.some of the streams near the coast had very small trout,probably due to them being migratory fish rivers but there is one exception in Cornwall on the Fal that is an absolute joy to fish,has a mayfly hatch and on the worst of days the fish are so keen to take a dry,one might turn their noses up at the average size but compared to most streams south of the Tamer they’re like formula 1 versions.never met another angler on the one mile stretch.

Elddis Wisp caravan by any chance? You made a very valid point in that the permit is in fact a privilege not a right. Too often I have witnessed anglers cutting back trees and smashing bank side vegetation, apart from the affront to the riparian owner, the wildlife especially water voles, need this cover.

A nice video . But do be honest . The reason we may chose to keep quiet about the location is the fear of finding 20 other guys fishing it when we arrive or perhaps the day before we are booked to fish it

Hope to come to try a change from the Eden ...if I dont get distracted by the beats downstream for an early spring salmon..or is that akin to Unicorn hunting?
@bannisterrods
@bannisterrods 3 жыл бұрын
There's always a chance...... although you might have more chance with the Unicorn....although there does seem to be some improvement with the Salmon on the Wye so you never know.....There are usually a few fish caught on opening day.

Do you recommend a wading staff. I’ve not fished for years and not as nimble as I was. Great videos, I can’t wait to get started now.

Luke - have you tied the emerger pattern yourself or are they available to buy from somewhere? Beautiful fly!!

It is a brilliant fly, and seems to work very well on the small streams. I've not seen them for sale So I tied that one up myself. There's quite a good tutorial here kzbin.info/www/bejne/pGiVZHyri8yefKM Or there is the original video here kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5LIlaywZ9apbc0 #flyfishing #caddis #flytying

Yes but you probably in a fly-fishing ' clique ' that informs you where to go.......I bet it's not like you picking these spots and places to stay all by yourself! So maybe solo anglers not in the know, don't know where they should head to.
@bannisterrods
@bannisterrods Жыл бұрын
🤣....... Certainly not in any sort of clique. And definitely haven't got people telling me where to fish. Google and old books will give all the information necessary to find fishing.
@carlhughes9584
@carlhughes9584 Жыл бұрын
@@bannisterrods Well don't know what old books you've got......I've got good old books about wild lakes. I don't find the wye and usk as easy as some do.......they don't even have maps. You still got an awful lot of random beats.......I want to fish the Usk this spring and I had a look and thought how the hell do I start?! Then if you book accomodations in advance, sods law time comes and the river is in an all mighty spate and unfishable!!

So why film and put on KZbin if you don't want anyone to know where it is?? But silly really
@bannisterrods
@bannisterrods Жыл бұрын
If i didn't want anyone to know where the waters are I certainly wouldn't put them on youtube. I mention the area but not the actual river. There is a lot of pleasure is finding and fishing new water.

@@bannisterrods Yes but you are secretive about the beats. Look, I understand that, but I like honesty. It's not just about satisfaction but not wanting to see others when fishing those special places too........the mountain lakes in Wales seem to be getting heavily promoted lately especially by the likes of a certain Ceri, even those special ' secret ' places and I must say I absolutely loathe this trend. Because these are special places and a refuge for wildlife in an over populated island and also for downright selfish reasons: a wild laker angler seeks solitude and I'd hate to get to a mountain lake and have lots of anglers up there!
