but the fish were certainly active.

These smaller streams are the way to go for game fish. Our larger rivers are becoming so polluted by the water companies that spawning gravels are becoming silted up to the point that the poor trout and salmon haven’t a chance to reproduce.

Enjoyed the gentle pace of your video - but it would be nice to see some of the fish that do come to hand even if it was a still image - most fisherman appreciate the beauty of the trout they catch.

Luke why are furled leaders so short? So if you have a furled leader of 4 ft you are supposed to only use 4 ft tippet? This is a very short leader of 8 ft. Surely this increases the risk of spooking trout say compared to using a long tapered nylon leader like 15 ft? I'm genuinely trying to work out what advantage furled leaders give over tapered leaders. Perhaps I could understand if furled leaders were as long as 9 ft, but it's the fact that they are so short.

A furled leader is just the back half of a leader set-up. You can add more than the length of the furled leader in mono, 5 or 6ft of mono on a 4ft furled leader would work fine, provided it is stepped down. I very rarely fish a leader longer than 12ft, even in Scandinavia where they have incredibly clear water. On smaller streams there is no need for long leader, I doubt I cast much more than 10ft or 15ft on a lot of streams. So much of the actual fly line rarely goes on the water, plus furled leader are heavier than a tapered mono leader which does help with turn over.

@@bannisterrods So furled leaders minimize drag, but you say they land more heavy than a tapered leader? It works for you. I guess it's just a confidence thing. I just don't like a short leader and the fly being close to the flyline. 12 ft is actually my minimum for a leader! Still works for you and I assume you have every confidence that the furled leader will not scare fish? I suppose it's also down to how accurate you are. But even in a small stream if I came across a big trout rising in a slow pool, I wouldn't want to be casting an 8 ft leader at him for fear of spooking him. I'd want as long a leader as I could manage, without getting stuck in trees on the back cast.

Jungle warfare at times but super stuff, and that nymph is a super way to use up all the big feathers on the cape for sure fantastic 👍

hi Luke and good to see you back on the water and a much awaited video, not much in the way of hatches in mid wales and very low water but so far I have managed a 2lb brownie on dry and a few smaller ones.

It was nice to get out. A 2 pound brown is a cracking fish, and that's a good way to start the season. Hopefully I'll get up to Wales soon, and there is still some water, and not too much algae....

I can't speak for Builth area but Banwy is like a stagnant stream in places although there is still some water in my river albeit very low , after we get some rain I want to try that stream in the hills so who knows may see you up there.....mike

Hi Mike, I think the tributaries are doing OK, not so sure about the Wye, the algae seems to appear earlier and earlier each year. Heading up there soon, so will find out...

A cold Easterly which is never a good wind,although as soon as the sun came out there was a bit of warmth. Thankfully the fish were starting to move.
