The word "nimrod" didn't become an insult until Bugs Bunny used it sarcastically when referring to Elmer Fudd in "A Wild Hare"👈. Few enough people knew the reference (even in 1940) that they assumed it was another word for "idiot".

Minnesota has a number of oddly named towns such as Starbuck, Embarrass, Climax and Fertile to name a few, but that close proximity of the latter two resulted in a very "interesting" headline in a local paper: Fertile Woman Dies In Climax". It took outsiders to find it hilarious for locals to be Embarrassed, by it.

Until recent times a part of Spartanburg county SC was known as "Sugar Tit" and it actually once had a US Post Office branch with that as it's official name. I actually bought some stuff from the now-closed Sugar Tit Hardware Store back in the 80's. For those who don't know, a 'sugar tit' was where you put sugar in a scrap of cloth, tied it shut, and gave it to kids to suck on in lieu of candy. The area went from rural to developed and the new residents didn't like the name so they took down any signs using it. At least we still have the community of "Possum Kingdom"!

Bacon Level Alabama may come from the three tiered crates hogs were raised in in Appalachia before WW2. The upper crate contained a hog that would be fed corn. Of the three crates, this is the only one that receives food. The top hog (yes, the term comes from this) would be butchered for tenderloins, chops and non-cured or ground meats. The middle crate, or the "bacon level" contained a hog that would feed on the waste from the hog above it. This hog would be used for cured meats; bacon and ham. The bottom crate contained a hog that would feed on the waste of the middle hog. This hog would be used for sausages and other ground, precooked products. Thank God for the FDA.

Good to hear you mention Abner Weed. He was owner of a lumber business and responsible for growing Weed as a “ company town” where workers and their families lived in company housing. When International Paper bought the lumber business in the 50’s, the housing I believe was mostly sold to the residents in it at the time and the company town was transformed into a real town. I am aware of this because my dad grew up there and graduated high school in 1943 before going into the Marines…..

You may like the song "I Want to Polka", which has all kinds of double entendre names, including Intercourse and Blueball, but also has "More Head", and if sung a certain way, "Bangor" and "Tampa." Outside the "nifty fifty" but still in the USA, Puerto Rico has "Loquillo", "little crazy", actually. And American Samoa does have a village spelled "Auto." No sure if there are any car dealerships there. Go North of the Lower 48, find places such as Medicine Hat, Alberta, and Dildo, Newfoundland.

Not only does Indiana have the town of Santa Claus, but also the towns of Gnaw Bone and French Lick, hometown of NBA legend, Larry Bird. The old adage goes... "Indiana is a strange place. South Bend is in the north, North Vernon is in the south, and French Lick ain't what you think it is."

Thought I was losing it when I looked up without having been listening to find that number 1 and 32 were both supposedly in Michigan, but then went back to listen and find that 32 is actually Maine.

I've lived in NM for almost 50 years and I never heard of Candy Kitchen. It looks like it's just a closed restaurant on Googlemaps. I can't find anything about population, but it looks like there is one house there. (The wild wolf sanctuary is actually located on Candy Kitchen Road in Ramah, NM.)

I live in a town in Pennsylvania called North East. It is in the very North WEST corner of the state! You can't get any more NORTH WEST in Pennsylvania than North East!! We have to constantly explain that's the town name and where it is to everyone we talk to not from the area. Make a list of the worst named cities in America and put North East as number 1.

I figured they would use Pie Town New Mexico. So named because the town was on the Great Cattle Drive corridor and there was a lady there that made pies for all the cowboys passing through the area. It's on Highway 60 approximately 50 miles East of the NM/ AZ border in Western NM. I've lived in NM all my life and never heard of Candy Kitchen NM until now.

I don't know how you missed Boring, Oregon, in the Boring Volcanic Field, in Clackamas County. I suppose it's not too exciting, since the field hasn't erupted in the last 57,000 years, but the town was named for William Harrison Boring, area pioneer.
