Great and timely topic, as I too have been delving into Dolby Atmos with Logic. Your approach with a group of speakers is clearly the best way to go, if one has the space and money. I ended up purchasing APL's Virtuoso plugin/app and use it with the Logic Dolby Atmos plugin in 7.1.4 monitor mode. Binaural headphones aren't as spacial as real speakers. But Virtuoso does a pretty good job of virtualizing the surround stage. One future topic in this area that I've found a bit confusing. If I bounce in place a region (on a surround track) using the (Sound Particles) Skydust 3D synth (7.1.2 configuration for the Dolby Atmos bed), it creates a multi channel audio file. I've done some experimenting with that multi channel audio file inside of Logic, and there's not really a lot one can do with it. Logic and its editor(s) are setup for mono and stereo. It plays back fine as multi channel. But when it comes to editing, it's a bit confusions. If this is an area you explore and share more about, that would be of interest. Thanks for the informative video!

It is WILD how quick Atmos and other Immersive formats are coming through recently, including speaker manufacturers to keep up with the trend!! Currently about to purchase a Kali Audio Immersive system in a few weeks!! You could not have timed this series any better. Thank you for that :)

I'm excited for the series, I only lately started to dive deeper into Atmos, but still on headphones for now. I wonder if you are going to run in the same problem as me, when stereo projects are converted into atmos, my object tracks get out of sync. Not when I start a fresh atmos project, but always with converted projects.

Hello Chris, thank you for the Atmos series it is great!! I have to ask, have you encounter malfunctions on the iLoud MTM? I've been reading about them and its widely mention that the quality control on those ones is not that good and the power supply fails a lot. what's your experience so far? is the investment worth it or should we look for better options? Thank you!

So I've been wondering for awhile, what about headphones? Can you now use headphones other than the ones that are "compatible?" For example, on my phone, I can only listen to atoms through certain speakers and certain headphones. Of course only beats or AirPods have head tracking, but I mean atmosphere in general. I've always wondered what makes it possible in AirPods or beats but not others, the only part I get is the head tracking (gyroscopic sensors make that possible.) But can we actually listen to or more importantly mix & create atmos projects using just normal headphones, the ones we already use every day and are accustomed to? It seems like everyone just keeps saying "use AirPods" but I'd really love to be able to get started with just my normal headphones. As far as I knew, it wasn't compatible. So is it now possible to mix atmos with "normal" headphones?

Is this the future? I mean, will we have to say good bye to Stereo in the future for music production. And do I, a 67 years old hobby musician and producer, really have to work myself into this material, buying gear needed for this?

Have you tried to use an instrument track as a 3d object and experienced synch problems? Fine with bed tracks and even 3d object tracks are fine on audio tracks but not instrument tracks as 3d objects. At least in my case the timing goes crazy unless I select all the tracks at once and record enable them all at once. Have you experienced this?

Great video as always, Chris! I was wondering though, does X-Monitor software/setup not solve the 'time delay' speaker issue when you calibrate the speakers, thus not needing a 3rd party app (i.e. Fuzzmeasure)? I'm hoping so, as I am intending to purchase a similar setup to use but with an outboard mixer, so it is crucial that ALL of this processing is done 'inside' the speaker... Otherwise this would put iLoud's out of the question for me if this is not the case :-( Cheers in advance, Mike.

Infact, I've just realised the iLoud MTM's DON'T use X-monitor, do they 😱 ... Now Im definitely wondering if they actually deal with the time delay, 'whilst' going through the single speaker calibration process ?? That would be such a shame if they don't, as surely many people would want to use in a similar situation to mine!?

All of my customers want mp3's. Much to my disappointment, I can't even remember the last time a client wanted a 44.1 CD. I'm not sure how I would market Atmos to my clients. Seems like a big investment for potentially no profit. Before I invest time in learning Atmos, I'll wait to see if it's even around a year from now.

I heard that Apple music will only accept ATMOS mixes on their platform. So, I'm pretty concerned how hard or easy it will be to just convert a stereo mix to the Atmos format in Logic to comply with Apple's demand. Although Atmos is very interesting, it's just too much for me to put my head around right now. The main question for me is: will there be an easy fix to be able to release songs on Apple music? Thanks for your effort making these videos!
@budgetkeyboardist
@budgetkeyboardist Жыл бұрын
The good news is that you heard incorrectly. Apple will still accept stereo mixes. What they ARE doing, though, is saying that you're not going to make their featured playlists unless you have an Atmos mix. For hobbyists, this doesn't matter because we likely don't have a shot at getting noticed by Apple anyway. But for pros, this means Atmos is pretty much a requirement.

Personally I look forward to catching some great deals on high end studio monitors in about 5 years when all the mix engineers on KZbin telling you to go all-in on Dolby Atmos today start to liquidate their multi-speaker setups when it doesn’t actually catch on.

Spatial Audio, is actually what Apple calls it. I think Sony 360, Atmos by Dolby etc...all these brand names will go away - and Spatial Audio will be the ncompassing surround... Otherwise your mix is tied to a company name, lol...

Does Sphere work with Apple Music? I found that I the only virtual device that would work for me is Loopback. Otherwise Apple Music just plays in 5.1. This is a common but not well understood problen.

But these are not HiFi speakers? Isn't 'Atmos' substituting fidelity for 'immersive novelty'?

I'll follow your next videos on this subject with great interest. Binaural rendering: not convicing for me yet. Nothing "behind" or "above" (withot seeing little moving dots on a screen). And I've tried many times with various "classic pro" heaphones, I play with logic atmos since 18 months. Exporting Atmos: How can you listen ADM BWF files, the files Logic is exporting, on a comsumer grade system? (just to check the final result) And well, let's forget the 12 speakers, 90% of listeners hear music thru headphones and more thru earbuds. Without a convincing binaural rendering I'm affraid Atmos will be the quadraphonic of the 3rd millenium. I'm realy interested in immersive music and sound and I'm affraid of that as I realy would like to use this new tool.

But is APPLE’s version exactly like DOLBY “ ATMOS” w/ it’s Renderer… I don’t think so. It fact there a difference from "Apple Music" > "TITLE > "Spotify’s "? With a True 9.1.4 to a 7.1.4 … is going to Translate differently than the other plus I feel the Stereo “ Fold Down ”sounds different than a Regular Stereo Mix w/ MASTER. I know it’s been around but it fairly new to us all still and there’s no one way to place the “ BEDS” nor the “ Objects”. Thx you for doing this Video. George. ( was @ NAMM 2023 and lots of "ATMOS" Booths. I listen to a LARGE Neumann w/ Fab DuPont :) & a 7.1.4 "FOCAL" w/ Fab, LUCA...Plus others! ...Those we were told was approx. $50K w/ Renderer. Crazy because I do this as a Hobby ...getting pretty GOOD! but not there yet! :) Thank You Chris for making this Video. George Amodei

Spatial Audio is what Apple calls it. They never mention the company Dolby, and the name Atmos. They would be stupid to hype another manufacturer. Also , people already are used to Spatial audio in Apple headphones.

So many things to take into consideration with Atmos. First off great video. I have watched many videos and been in an atmosphere studio. The one thing for me is it did not impress me at all. I did learn a lot about it. My issue is there is no headphones that translate well to atmos. Thats the big issue. There is no way the average consumer will buy7- 12 speakers to fill up a single room with sound treatment to do all this in the first place.

I agree wholeheartedly - we're certainly being pulled into this! I've waited to dig into ATMOS on WLPR specifically because I've been very hesitant/cautious. But many users are curious, so I felt it was high-time for me to dive in and see what's up. It's interesting, that's for sure!
