Your 2 "1 handed backgand fundamentals" videos are the best explanations that someone has ever given to me since I started playing tennis 13 years ago. I wish I had a tennis instructor this thorough when I learned how to play.

Hi Jeremy. This is indeed the most detailed information I’ve ever seen or heard on the one handed backhand. And it has solved a lifelong problem for me. My unit turn and racquet drop blended into something that was neither a full unit turn or a racquet drop. Now with your expert video and the information about the wrist radial deviation and the internal shoulder rotation I’ve got to tell you I’m more excited about my tennis than ever before. Ive just been practicing and I can see now that I will have a backhand that I can truly control. You’re good at this Jeremy. The magic is truly in the detail.

2 things that are not mentioned and are very important are .. 1) the shoulders “point” to the incoming ball before contact. That is the line connecting the shoulders points to the ball . This helps you to rotate and align nice with the ball 2) the but of the racket , momentarily, points to the ball right before contact . This also helps the correct racket to ball alignment. Other than that , a very nicely composed video.

Very impressive videos. I love the details and the approach to all the segments. As a one handed backhand player who has spent thousands of hours on the court and revamping my technique and then repeated matches to perfect it, I have never seen this level of detail with any instructor. Amazing work. I’m in Toronto Canada. Wish you were closer!

Very good video. All the fundamentals. Maybe 1 more tip and 1 comment : Tip : you must shift to the ball and not to the direction where you want to hit. For that, you have your front foot align with the stroke for transfert. The hips must stop before the stroke for good biomechanics transfer. Comment : I think Jeremy that bend the arm before the strike is important if you wish to have the whip effect. When you launch a freebee you slightly bend the arm. What is important is to have the arm extend at contact. Jeff from france. Continue your great videos.

Thank you for this comprehensive guide. I will surely come back. I have an observation about your stroke, I may be wrong. Just before your contact point, your head accelerates down and back, as if it is making so much effort to not look at trajectory, that it is looking away from it. This might cause some instability? I looked at Federer and he does something similar yet, I look at Wavrinka and his head is like a still image overlayed on video.

Again, I really value and appreciate all of the details. I've had tennis elbow for about a year now, and have been seeing various health professionals. I think it started because I didn't keep my arm straight as I would hit a backhand. Another thing I'm probably doing wrong is getting my wrist involved around the time I hit the ball. SO, MY questions: I see that you say to get the wrist into a dorsiflexed and radially deviated position. DO YOU TRY TO KEEP THE WRIST LOCKED FROM THAT POINT ON? I find that my wrist position drifts and I start to come forward, and I'm afraid this is prob not good for my tennis elbow, since wrist motion stresses these forearm muscles. Hope that's clear.

You know, I've watched a few of your videos now and I have to say YOU'RE PRETTY DAMNED GOOD! I really like you're cerebral-yet-casual style/approach to tennis. I play The Sit-Down Game (wheelchair tennis) where you hit everything with the same grip (I'd say "Frying Pan") so our backhands are a little different (watch Gordon Reid or Alfie Hewett), but a fundamental is a fundamental, n'est-ce pas? We depend on wheelchair rotation to take the place of hip rotation on the forehand side, but on the BH it's all upper torso, shoulder and arm, hence my keen interest in generating power from these areas. There are a few BHs on tour (yes, there's professional wheelchair tennis!) that will make you spit your gum when they hit a BH and they seem to generate racket head speed via inward shoulder rotation, elbow extension, and (a stretch-shortened) supination of the forearm. If you ever have the time/inclination, I'd love to know what your thoughts on the subject are. There are good examples of the "reverse backhand" right here on KZbin, just do a search for the aforementioned two Brits and Diede de Groot from Holland on the women's tour. Otherwise, just keep up the good work on this channel! Much Appreciated - Jim Davis, Montreal

James Davis hi James, thanks for the compliment. I find the sit down game interesting and would like to learn more about it in the future. Cheers 👍

The internal shoulder rotation of the hitting arm is vital! Otherwise players tend to use the wrist to drop the racket resulting in loss of racket head control and risking injury.

It would be great if you could follow up on a one hand backhand return of serve video. I know personally opponents like to pick on the the chest height - out wide serve to the one hand backhand.

Hi Jeremy. Nice backhand class. I was hoping you could explain where to contact the ball? I guess this goes for forehand as well. Do you brush from 6 to 12 o'clock? If righty, is it the outside of the ball... say 7 to 2 o'clock? Or crazy, do you hit the top half of the ball .. say center to 12 o'clock? Thanks for any clarity you can provide.

Jeremy, can you explain the "extension" and "radial deviation" for single hand backhand? Modern tennis on the forehand is using a "lag" and "snap" to add more power to the forehand. Is there a "lag" "snap" on the backhand? It seems that "extension/deviation" will not allow "lag" and "snap" like in a forehand. Can you explain why the wrist doesn't snap on single backhand?

Jeremy, thanks for the video. While I could nick pick here or there, in general I agree with your analysis and teaching. For me, the backhand was an easy stroke to develop because it's very similar to a batter's swing and if you played any baseball or softball, you would get this naturally. I will say that, like what you taught, I started with topspin on my finish but realize that most people have terrible backhands so I drive the ball back nearly flat and get winners or chip returns. I also will say something you didn't comment on and that is, I am relaxed when I hit my backhand. Not as super relaxed as the forehand but on a scale of 1-10, about a 7 or 8. It looks like at 1:28, that you are not relaxed in your swing or maybe that's because you were just demonstrating. But to me, it's important to be relaxed because over time, you could develop injuries like tennis elbow. It's a pretty jarring stroke on your arm.
@FundamentalTennis5 жыл бұрын
Wally Friend thanks for the comment Wally. Yes, there are other fundamentals but I didn’t want to make the video too long. Relaxation is a big one because without it it’s harder to do everything 👍

the racket drop: huge advantage to tall players who can drop it so low (without knicking the ground). Nadal gets a lot of spin (2 hand or not) because he has more height to work with I think (and he must drop that racket really low). racket path is important too of course (as grip,...).

Really like the videos - one question I have. I am trying to improve my one handed bh. But there are a lot of things here and in part 1 to get right. It’s very hard to think of ALL of these things at the same time. Are there specific things that I should focus on and then build to focus on other parts later e.g. getting the grip right is obviously key.
@FundamentalTennis5 жыл бұрын
mu11ian thank you. This is a great question. I would focus on the grip only first until it’s a habit and then the preparation (done with the turn and racquet set at the bounce of the ball).
