8:48 - The Ball didn't pass the line entirely 10:18 - A player gets a yellow card when he misses his tackle, he makes a foul and receives a yellow card as a warning.. A player receives a red card when he already has a yellow card and commits a second foul. when a player receives a red card he must leave the field and his team goes from 11 to 10 players. the team cannot bring in an 11th player until the end of the match and in addition the player who received the red card cannot play the next match see + if he has made a very big foul.

If a player collects too many yellow cards (is it three, or five? I forget) during the season, he also has to sit out the next game.

Virgil is a defender. His coach asked him to play as a striker (that's what's written on the paper). That's why he was in the right position to score. It wasn't luck. ;)

yes that's correct, and the referee has his watch which vibrates when the ball completely crosses the line

The whole ball has to pass the goalline for a goal. Also you can see the referee looking to his watch, which probably means they used goalline technology from which the referee should get a signal on his watch if the ball has completely passed the goalline. Also with these angles it can be very hard to determine on view if the ball completely passed the line or not. Also the red cards that Ramos and Alonso took were, if I remember correctly, so they were suspended for the last group stage match, which wasn't of any importance for Real anymore since they already had enough points with this win on Ajax, and their yellow cards were cleared, so they would't have to worry about getting a yellow card or something and miss a more important match. This totally fits with the way Mourinho (the coach that gave them the instructions) approaches football.

10:23 the coach told his own players to get red cards through time wasting. They lose 2 players but the opponent is losing needed time and rhythm. Just imagine LA Lakers making a few 24 seconds violations to disrupt the rhythm of their opponent.

You need to watch more football to understand some of those situations;) rules videos, tactical videos, full matches (i suggest milan-Liverpool 2005)

Ball needs to cross the line as a whole, not partially, here the whole ball didn't cross the line yellow card is a warning for player that this is his last hard foul or delaying the play, red card means player needs to leave the pitch and his team plays with 1 less player, 10vs11, 2 yellow cards also mean red card - in this situation Mourinho (manager) told his player Alonso to get red card, because it would mean he will leave the game and will be suspended for the next game - and why would he want his player to be suspended? Because the next game was against smaller team where he wouldn't need him, but the 2nd game after that was a huge game where he was crucial to play, so if he would grab another yellow or red in this smaller game, he wouldn't play in the bigger game, it's kind of a hack to clean your sheet before major game, Mourinho was a genius for doing that

100% of the ball must pass the line and the perspective make it tricky to see from TB, but there is a goal line technology for about a decade now

10:52 Association rules football / „Soccer“ has mostly personal fouls. The cards are like a „two strikes you’re out“-system, in addition to „free kicks“ which can be called pretty much all over the playing field and penalty kicks from 11 meters away from the goal line if a foul happens within that rectangular box in front of the goal (free kicks and penalty kicks are technically against the team, not against a particular player). Yellow means LAST WARNING, yellow-red means second similarly severe foul by same player, red means VERY severe foul, sent off immediately. In this case, the players were sent off because of „Delay of game“, which is a kind of „unsportsmanlike conduct“ in Soccer. And, well, their coach / manager told them to take the cards in order to run time off the clock. If it works, and the refs don’t extend the time played, it‘s a Bill Belichik-like form of clock management…

8:48 The entire shape of the ball must cross the white line. The base of the ball may pass the line, but perhaps the entire body does not. That is why the white lines have that width. If the base of the ball resting on the ground shows that it has stopped touching the white line, it means that, in effect, the entire body of the ball has crossed the white line.

One of my favorite moments in football happened a few years ago -- it was the League Cup final, Bayern München (the most successful German club) vs. Borussia Dortmund (as it happens, MY local club). After the regular playing time plus extra time, it was still a draw, so it went to a penalty shootout. Bayern was one goal behind, but still had a chance of winning when one of their players, usually a top scorer, started running towards the ball to kick it in ... and managed to stumble. Nobody knows over what -- his own feet, a blade of grass, open air, *something*. Absolutely no discernible reason. The shot was ruined (but counted, as he'd touched the ball), and Bayern München lost. 😎

That little note was just to inform that the tall defender virgil needs to play striker and probably the player that takes his place in the defence. The coach probably needed a taller player up there 9:14 the whole ball until the last millimeter of its diagram needs to pass the line

A red card means you're fired from the field (and you miss the next match in the league). Two yellow card means an automatic red card. The bit when a coach (Jose Mourinho) told a player (Xabi Alonso) to take a red card, and immediately after told another player (Sergio Ramos) to take another, means the coach deliberately gives up 2 of his players, most probably as an act of sportsmanship after the opponents had been wrongfully judged by the referee. Notice how Alonso and Ramos did as the coach told them to, deliberately waste time while taking a free kick, inviting the red card, no questions asked, even though it meant they'd miss their next match. These 2 guys aren't just mid level players, they're world class, and key players in the team. That's how sportsmanship is supposed to be, and I don't think there's any other instances of something like this happening in any top-level league in the past 50 years. That's why it's 1 in a trillion moment.

There are no plays as such as there are in NFL. American Football is kind of a turn-based sport. Football is constantly going without interruptions. So more like Basketball or Ice Hockey in that sense. What was on the paper was just that the Central Defender (since he is very tall) was supposed to take position as Striker up the very front. Probably a hail mary move in knockout game, where it doesn't matter by how many goals you loose. So putting everything on attack in the final part of the game makes sense, if you get the equalizer. Those papers are very rare and all you can really do is make change in the positions on the pitch or inform the goalkeeper about which opposing player statistically shoots which side of the goal more often in a penalty shootout.

Deliberately delaying continuation of the game will get you in trouble -- depending on circumstance, anything from having to cede the ball to the other team to getting a red card.

The referees decision is final and it would also be down to the linesmen as the referee will look for his input first that is why no goal and they didn't have the benefit of instant replay on tap so to speak.
