I feel like Katarinas Diamond and below can very well be elo inflated, but if you play Katarina in high elo, especially as a one trick, you are torturing yourself. To be a challenger Kat main, you have to know how to lane well because early kills are harder to get. Even with tp, it’s much rarer than Drew seems to indicate to get a triple kill that early. This champion thrives off of enemy mistakes. If Kat is even or behind she is fairly useless, despite being one of the snowballiest champs in the game. So when people know how to play against you, you feel like a useless addition to your team. (All of her power budget is in damage, no cc or team utility). People always seem to forget that she loses almost every meta lane and is forced to resort to roaming or else she will die to her laner or get poked out of lane. While it is annoying to play against a Kat that seems to abandon her lane just to get roaming kills and win, it is also equally as annoying to play perfectly against a laner and still lose because they have a simple “win fight button” or are just statistically superior in a 1v1 regardless of skill. (She doesn’t buy mejais as often btw because of how easy it is to kill Kat if she makes one tiny mistake). This makes her very feast or famine like Yasuo, but without the 0/10 powerspike. As I said, if Kat is not ahead, she is behind. And even if Kat is ahead, she can lose that lead super easily (which is why this guy plays so kda safe). So it’s equally as annoying to play Kat as it is to play against her. High elo Kat players are not less skilled than laning champs, they just have a different play style from most other champs with its own pros and cons. (I’m not saying this champ isn’t op btw. And there are other champs that require more laning skills in high elo. I’m just pointing out how hard this champion is to play against people who know what they’re doing, and people always underestimate this until they actually play Kat). - Edit: regarding her mechanics, her mechanics aren’t the hardest in the game, but knowing how to play fights around your cds and around enemy cds is incredibly difficult. She is squishy and has extremely high cds if she doesn’t get resets (Ahri counters Kat because her charm has a lower cd than all of Kat’s abilities except Kat Q which is 11 seconds to Ahri’s 12 seconds). The biggest problem with Kat players isn’t a lack of understanding on how to combo, but how to combo properly depending on the fight and when to actually go in and leave. The number of times I see a Kat go into a winnable fight and die instantly is sad. She has to play chess with her opponents cds and her own cds while simultaneously playing a character as speedy as an anime character like Minato. - I agree that her play style can be viewed as “quite toxic” as Drew said, but remember that we are playing League of Legends, a toxic game. So she is perfect for this game. Also sorry about my rant. Just wanted to get this out there because of how often people say “Kat is so broken, just hit R and win.” (I had a Lulu say this in game once. Her W cancels Kat’s R btw). So while Kat might deserve some hate as a champ, 90% of people who hate on her are dumb and don’t understand her or how to play against her.

the thing is, these high level, high elo player make some champs like kata look op af but she really isn't at least from what i experience and what other challenger kat mains say (KatEvolved). the reason why you run tp ign in lane is not just that you can roam better but bcs have your E to escape, you lose lane against 90% of the matchups anyway so no point in not just perma roaming. this is just my personal opinion tho and i am nowhere close to being a pro or whatever, it's just what I experience :D

31:51 The only time you get Rocket Belt before Nashors is if you feel that you literally can't engage without that gap closer, like vs Zoe. Nashors gives you 10 extra AP, but more importantly is the on-hit passive, which is applies on E, every time a dagger is picked up, and every tick of her ult. It's just a ludicrous amount of damage, especially when you're against champions like viego/zac/lee/ezreal, who really only have one big movement spell (technically 2 in lee sin's case, but Q has to land on an enemy target. We've all seen the montages and know what can happen, but generally lee is reliant on W/ward for true mobility). Once those are used up, particularly with karma aiding in mobility, you can counter engage pretty potently, and having nashors is just a much higher damage potential.

the nashors vs protobelt thing for katarina is usually just a judgment call about how often you're using your autos that game and how much you need the penetrations. It can also be a gold thing because buying two amp tomes or the upgrade helps you more than buying attack speed. So sometimes you wanted nashors but the way the gold lined up you ended up protobelt first.

Talking about Elo inflating champions: What they all have in common is that their role interaction is completely different from the general style of the game and are pretty snowbally in nature or have a game deciding tool in their kit. That's why there are often OTPs for them. So my most elo inflating champions are: Riven, Yasuo, Irelia, Heimerdinger, Kayn, Evelynn, Shaco, Blitzcrank, Katarina, Akali, Talon. Evelynn is taking my personal favorite because her invisibility is completely against the rules of the game itself and it makes her almost impossible to play against in badly organized teams.

Katarina main here, might have the answer for 2 questions : - Sometimes Nashor's > Protobelt, why ? Personnaly, I go Nashor's first when I need more dps. Protobelt is good when you can one shot, but you have nothing left if your full combo misses the kill. - Why didn't he mejai ? Because it's way more difficult to surive a teamfight as a Katarina than as a LeBlanc, Akali or Sylas for example. Especially with this build because you have 0 omnivamp (relentless hunter). So your job is basically to pop off in teamfights, which can be going fo a certain deaths if you can 80% HP 2 people. I guess you want to invest in 100% permanent stats so you are the exact same threat the next teamfight.

I think doing something different to meta strats doesn't mean you're a bad player, especially with this kata. He might lack the testicles initiating fights and completely dominating but he's a clean kata and his playstyle obviously works. I've had success with AP (nashors into rocketbelt) on hit (bork into kraken or kraken into bork with the third item being rageblade) and I do believe sundered can be played still but it seems weaker while giving more tankiness which is not my preferred play style

In my experience after just picking her up I’ve found Kata the hardest to main. Her laning phase is subpar, her trades have to be spot on and she’s extremely vulnerable to almost the entire roster of champions. From what I’ve learnt so far, her roaming is definitely something you have to do. I can’t say she’s inflated because the decisions you make and mechanics you have to incorporate are crucial. Everything from Runes, to play style, builds and understanding your matchups plus your potential spikes. I like the challenge. It’s truly far harder than Zed, Ekko, Akali and the like.

32:00 the Nash buy is because of the enemy are kinda tanky, and he isn't incredibly fed. and nash gives wayy more dmg, so it's a faster spike, so with Nash kata has a greater chance to be able to 1v1 viego. -Kata main myself.

That's what people don't seem understand - if you lose lane, you leave lane. Kat loses almost every lane, so it's ideal for her to leave lane. She also has a kit that is really strong for roaming, which doubles down on this playstyle. Good roams, bad laning, why would you try to play the 1v1 mid?

its actually the only viable way to play katarina in high elo as her laning phase is weaker than any other mid lane champion's. If she engages mid laner she just dies, the only way is opponent's huge mistakes which happens very rarely in high elo.

Nashers tooth spikes you much harder than rocket belt in terms of damage but the build path is rlly not great, having to build a ton of attack speed early in lane does you very little whereas the rocket belt build path allows for insane early burst with alternator. If you need the pressure in the early part of the lane rocketbelt is better but if you can greed for the nashers your transition into the mid game will be insane

Virgo, tone, yasuo, sett, tryn, zed, fizz, qiyana, I can't think of any other melee mid laners, but those ones do plenty of interaction. Kat literally does nothing until she gets a free 3 kills, and you might say, "oh so he logically doesn't take free poke!" Sure, but at the same time that should out you behind, instead you get a free kill somewhere and instantly win lane with no counterplay. Zed though is 50/50 for the most part cause neither of you can really trade unless one messes up, she wins against qiqi as soon as she gets seeker, and before that she can still take pretty even trades. Her lvl 2 is insane against melee champs, the only ony that would realistically beat her lvl 2 is sett. Viego wins against every champ basically so yeah, yone could lose a trade hardcore depending on whether kat can dodge the q or not, and yasuo wins but barely. Also, you still have to acknowledge that it's unhealthy for the game just like yuumi. You refuse to play the game but just win because, hey, I got a single kill without any work into it. She snowballs insanely hard and she's pure aoe. On top of that she has resets and does damage with her e... There is literally no skill in kat, like whatsoever. You might say macro??? Everyone in that elo has to play macro well, there's no uniqueness in his awareness or how he plays. He just wins because he gets a kill for free and then bulldozes because dark seal is a thing and kat now has equal gold. He's down 30 cs in 5 minutes? Oh cool, but I just got a kill so I now win no matter what. Listen, there is obviously a certain way to play kat, but she's not hard, it's like jax, just time your engage properly and you're fine. Except with jax that's not what decides if you're fine. Also, if you're say, 2 items into the game, you might not even have to care about when you go in, you just do it and insta kill them or at least do major damage. It's not healthy for the game, the same way the new graves mid isn't. Some things just aren't healthy for the game, and kata is one of them, a few others would be zhonyas(no ad equivalent), serpents fang(no ap equivalent and super super gold efficient). Things like imperial mandate are also unhealthy for the game because there is literally no game in which you'd build that, it's just worse than literally any other option in any other situation.
