Good tip! here's another: Carry a pocket notepad and pencil with you at all times. Every now & then you'll hear something, see something, or think of something offhandedly that is an interesting phrase. Write it down, and keep a log or Rolodex of these little tidbits that occur to you daily. This can become a resource for filling in blanks when you you're stuck trying to complete a set of lyrics.

Synecdoche : a figure of speech in which a part is made to represent the whole or vice versa, as in England lost by six wickets (meaning ‘the English cricket team’). The vice versa bit, is important enough to mention.

I've heard this technique was called metonomy, maybe that's something else. Super helpful reminder just before writing another song. Thanks!
@SongWritersChopShop4 ай бұрын
@@traytonmonju3943 cheers tray. Metonymy is similar but is something associated with a thing and not necessarily part of the thing. There's lots of crossover between metonymy and synecdoche.

Norwegian Wood is a dick joke. The song is about John cheating on his wife(he didn't sleep in the bath) Further complicated by the last track on the album Run for Your Life where John warns his wife not to cheat or he'd kill her.

@@MichaelForbes-d4p lol, it's highly debated. Is it a d joke, is it weed, is it a mispronunciation of "knowing she would", is it wall panelling? Guess we'll never know. 🤣

@@hw343434 Norwegian Wood is one of my favorite songs and It was a perfectly accurate comment. You may not be familiar with the snarky and subversive nature of the Beatles lyrics.
@BigBri5504 ай бұрын
Apparently this is how Paul McCartney remembered it: "John told Playboy that he hadn't the faintest idea where the title came from but I do. Peter Asher had his room done out in wood, a lot of people were decorating their places in wood. Norwegian wood. It was pine really, cheap pine. ... So it was a little parody really on those kind of girls who when you'd go to their flat there would be a lot of Norwegian wood. It was completely imaginary from my point of view but in John's it was based on an affair he had. This wasn't the décor of someone's house, we made that up. So she makes him sleep in the bath and then finally in the last verse I had this idea to set the Norwegian wood on fire as revenge, so we did it very tongue in cheek. ... It could have meant I lit a fire to keep myself warm, and wasn't the décor of her house wonderful? But it didn't, it meant I burned the fucking place down as an act of revenge, and then we left it there and went into the instrumental." -Paul McCartney, Many Years From Now by Barry Miles, p.270-71, 1994 (as found on The Beatleswiki)

Why does no one discuss the ending of 'Norwegian Wood'?! 🎶"And when I awoke / I was alone / This bird had flown / So I lit a fire / Isn't it good / Norwegian wood"🎶 My analysis : The girl wouldn't have sex with him, so he burns her damn house down!
@SongWritersChopShop4 ай бұрын
In my first draft of the script I did mention that. It's both hilarious and troubling tho. The joke is set up beautifully in the first verse when he mentions NW. They had a wicked sense of humour for sure. But it's troubling to think they thought it was an appropriate response to a woman not wanting to sleep with a married man to burn her house to the ground. Oh John😂
