It was finally time to put my bike where my mouth is, and take the KTM 1090 Adventure into the dirt. Off came the hard panniers and on went the Hepco & Becker Xtravel soft bags. Off came the Metzeler Tourance Next tyres and on went some Bridgestone AX41 knobblies. Then, given my location at the top of Europe and how much I loved the place last year, off I went to Norway to see what the Trans European Trail had to offer!
Maybe after just one day of ADV training, this was a step too far? Maybe I'd finally bitten off more than I could chew? Maybe this was the single best thing that I have ever done on a motorbike?
All will be revealed and more as I take to the backroads and explore!
I'll not be sharing routes in this series, as all routes are based upon those created by the hard working folks at TET. Check out their website to find carefully curated routes across europe:

Thank you for coming back to us here in Norway. The reason there is no off road driving in Norway it`s because the fragile state of nature, long winter, short growing period, aka short summer. It take`s hundreds of year`s to grow back a little tire track, especially in the mountains. Looking forward to the rest of this trip. Keep up the great work!

The reason for no off-road driving in Norway is fragile politicians and a select few people.
@AndyManCam

Sounds like a nice idea, but i think we all know that if everyone was allowed to ride/drive where they wanted, many would kick the arse out of it until either the landscape is ruined, somebody gets killed or both.

The reason for not allowing off-road travel is as a reaction to how it was pre -73 where it was 100% free for all. Unfortunatly thanks to lobbying from various organizations this will not change in the forseeable future. Unfortunate that these rules are among why we are building so many roads in the mountain, because its easyer to make that then to establish a trail.

@laggmonkei For me the thinking was not having another sticky-outy edge on the bike to catch on stuff. Plus the stand on the 1090 is very long, so it always felt like the bike stood a little too vertical already. I once put it on the stand on a slight incline and when i leaned on the seat for a rest, the compression of the suspension meant suddenly the bike was completely vertical and it fell over!! Not at all embarrassing. For those around me, it just looked like i got off and pushed my own bike over!!

Oooh look at you, waving your springtime throbber around! Think yourself lucky mate! You are least have great roads and a few trails on your doorstep! I’ve got the flattest flatlands Germany has to offer and widespread ban on trail riding!! 🤣
@DoRullings
@DoRullings Ай бұрын
Thank you for behaving respectfully. 🙂There are many dirt roads that are closed during this period in the spring when the frozen ground under the road melts. During fall and winter, when the ground under the road gets frozen, this is not a problem because you get an "ice bridge" that forms slowly and evenly. However, when the road starts to melt in the spring, it doesn't melt evenly and you then get many characteristic bumps in the road called "telehiv" " in Norwegian or "frost heaving" in English. Heavier vehicles such as cars, tractors, trucks, etc. can and very often will make these bumps way worse and makes bumps that would have normally even out stay there permanently. You can actually often see small sinkholes where cars have made holes in the frozen ground. Many of these roads are private, including the one you had to turn at which was closed with a chain, and it is the landowners themselves who have to do/pay for the maintenance of the road and they naturally want to the limit expenses. I don't think they care that much about a relatively light motorcycle like yours riding there, but it is usually easier to enforce a total driving ban than driving ban with exceptions.

The sitting vs standing thing takes a bit of getting used to. I stood a lot when first riding on gravel, then with time developed the confidence to sit more. Gassing it out of the corner when you sitting is a lot of fun, back wheel spins and you feel the bike’s natural response is to ‘stand up’. Once I trusted that feeling, sitting down was a lot easier (and less tiring)!

So i was contemplating the new Tracer 9 GT+ at 15k, it's steep. But you've now sold me on the 1090. Whilst it doesn't bave some festuress I'd like. Thankfully, cruise control csn be added and a quickshifter. At around £5.5k, ABS, and traction control. It's all that I need to go off-road(still learning) on the road and commute at a fraction of the cost... also means more money can be put towards that special weekend toy... Thanks Andy.

You’ll totally not regret it mate. SO much bike for the cash. I’d have had another one in a heartbeat, but the at the moment i had to, the second hand prices and offers on Tuaregs made the choice for me. But it really is a do everything machine and i loved it. Easily the most comfortable big mile machine I’ve ever ridden. I had an ATLAS throttle lock on in this video. You can see it on the throttle tube. Super simple and absolutely brilliant.

That said I am considering a cheap and lower dual sport to get on some green lanes and then start marking off the TET, so will look at the Royal Enfield 450 Himalayan, also might check out the CFMoto 450 MT, a usable amount of power for the inexperienced and old geezer to learn some skills on. lovely to finaly see the KTM in action altho we all know it only had a brief appearance on the channel..... ive commented before when you said you took the bike to do the Norwegian TET that its a very Big Bike frendly part of the TET but going up there during the snow melt does make it tricky..... the reasoning for the road closure is that the base of the roads are soft due to the frost deep in the ground not yet thawed and that traps moisture in the top layers.... as demonstrated by you side stand taking a deep dive on a surface that would probably be rock solid a few weeks later 🤣 any traffic on the road during this period REALLY messes up the roads...... for your next outing on the Aprilia i would suggest either the baltic countries or sweden.... its a bit more technical without going full on Enduro mode 😁

I know right! It almost seemed like the KTM was never really there, until finally a video made it real!! Makes perfect sense with the road closures. If they can't be bothered to translate it to English, I think you should consider it free of charge if you're a tourist, to be honest 😛 There's some toll roads that require you to pay for bikes on the Norwegian TET as well. Further west on the TET, they actually have AutoPASS (e.g. Electronic Toll Collection, where they scan your plates). Even if you're not going to take it offroad, the point of an adventure bike (to me) is the open seating position, compliant suspension, luggage options, and good road manners. ADV bikes are the modern equivalent of what old-timers like me used to call "standards," which were all we had before motorcycles veered off on different evolutionary paths toward more narrow-focus and specialized configurations. I like ADVs and I'm not ashamed to say if I had one I'd put street tires on it and stick to pavement riding.
@nomading_in

yeah I think they still serve a real purpose (although I love a bit of off-road thrown in). Riding a naked bike on the other end of the scale isn't really that practical on highways etc.

Of course I totally agree with you mate. No denying that the ADV platform makes for the most comfortable riding package. Especially for those of us who are a bit bigger or a bit more 'broken'! Seems to me your first mistake was getting rid of the CB1000R. 🙂 Adventure bikes are fun, I have one. But I would never get rid of my CBR1000RR. I am genuinely concerned that letting go of the CBR would cause me to loose experience in riding on road. And I don’t want to get better off road at the expense of getting worse on road.
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam Ай бұрын
I wholeheartedly disagree! I ride just as quick on the road on an adventure bike as I did on the CB. Only difference is that i do it in comfort and have to stop at petrol stations less often! 😂. I also firmly believe that even this short period of riding off the tarmac has improved my skills and feel on the tarmac. I used to panic every time the tyres even seemed like they might be on the edge of traction. Now i feel like they have plenty more to give and that the bike moving around and doing its thing is normal and nothing to freak out about. All great skills for staying relaxed and , as a result, becoming a better rider.

@@AndyManCamOne bike doesn’t replace the other. Variety is the spice of life. I agree with you that riding off road will provide valuable skills in sliding and traction that will help on road. I rode a CB125S (street bike) off road and for 5 winters in a row on shear ice. No studs, just rubber. And I learnt a lot. But you are kidding yourself if you think that an ADV bike will keep your skills at taking curves sharp on the streets. If you value taking it easy and just getting from point A to point B in comfort without being to concerned about your skills taking curves improving, then you may have made the right choice. Keep up the good work, I enjoy your videos.

Base of my spine is not good and after only 3 months back riding a dual sport I’m unfortunately giving it up , I can’t stand for any length of time now and any sharp jars or wiggles plays havoc with my back. First thing you should ask is am I physically capable of doing this and then do I have the skillset especially if you’re going remote . Great to see a tourist understanding and respecting the strict law against driving in "utmark". In this particular case, I think it is forbidden by the private land/road owners because the road is too soft, so driving it it will leave deap grooves destroying the soft road. By the wording on the sign, you can be pretty sure idiot tourists before you have ignored the rule and destroyed the road previous years.
