Grip fighting in BJJ can be overwhelming at 1st. There are lots of grips and knowing which ones to fight for can be difficult. In today's video I have a question about this exact thing from a White Belt.
He says that when he's training Jiu-jitsu in the gi he feels lost on which grips he should be fighting for. So in this video I share a simple idea that you can implement into your Brazilian Jiu-jitsu to make grip fighting simple.
This is my personal strategy on fighting for grips and when I lay it out, you'll probably think of it as maybe too simple. But sit back and watch some of the best guys out there and notice that they don't grip up casually. They grip up with intention for something very specific.
Practice this and you'll experience a much higher success rate with your techniques, and you'll never feel lost by which grips you should go for.

I remember a defining moment. I was working stand up against my coach. He asked me afterward, "why are you doing that?" when I brought up grips. "That? Which part coach?". "That's what I mean. What is your intention when you grab?". Eye-opening moment that elevated everything I was doing.

Take like 2 months of judo you'll be more comfortable with standing grip fighting.

Grips are so key. They can be great to distract or great to defend just in that sense alone.

Standing Rule #1: Steal/Kill the sleeve when same-sided (Aiyotsu) to keep your opponent off your lapel, and Climb the Rope (cross-grip and slide up the lapel) in opposite-sided (Kenkayotsu) to establish a dominant inside lapel grip first. Standing Rule #2: if Rule #1 doesn't work (your opponent knows what he is doing), either post on the weak side collar or pin their advanced hand to their hip. That's about it. Everything else comes from those two rules, it is just a matter of moving grips once you have dominant position. Kumite (grip fighting) is so much about movement and relative positioning that much of it falls apart in ne waza since your relative positions are more fixed due to the ground blocking one direction of an axis of movement. Jimmy Pedro and Travis Stevens have some great videos about this if you guys want to get a 30k foot plan going for your standing game.

What are the words that you put in parenthesis from?
@rickfinsta2951

@@joshuajacobs6481 Just the Japanese terms for same-sided and opposed stances. Aiyotsu would be RvR or LvL, and Kenkayotsu would be RvL. Since your relative position is different, you have to approach gripping differently. Hope that helps.

Yes, and being shorter than your opponent gives you an advantage as well. The only disadvantage position that I have found is being me.
