This is the first in a video series teaching the woodburning tips and their uses. This series is for the Solid Point woodburner. I’ll do another video on Wire Nib tips too, so stay tuned!
I made a board using basswood to experiment with all the most common woodburning tips.
The goal wasn’t to make it pretty.
The goal was to find out what pyrography techniques are easy, okay, and hard with each tip.
👉 Want a copy of the entire board? Download your FREE PDF on BurnSavvy.com when you subscribe to my email list!
First tip we cover is the universal point and it’s little sister the mini universal point. A lot of pyrographers call this the chisel tip because of its look.
I also have a full article on the universal tip on my website BurnSavvy.com.

I've been to your web, I'll find you on FB but FB & YT are all the social media I can handle. Maybe I'll branch out if I get good enough to open an etsy shop. Tqsm... For the information and I use oly one particular tip for all purpose? And what are the difference between that pen?
@BurnSavvy
@BurnSavvy 3 жыл бұрын
You can definitely use one nibs for just about any purpose… If you try hard enough. The purpose of these videos is to show what the nibs naturally want to do. If you’re asking about the difference between the solid point and the wire nib pen, the wire nib is more expensive, but faster to heat up/cool down and generally the easier to use

@@BurnSavvy thanks!! I figured I'd practice on some pine in the meantime before I buy any since I've heard pine is okay and I live in maine. This may be a stupid question, but I imagine it's not good to burn on any planks that have been painted or have any kind of coating already on them? I've got a few different types of scrap wood I can use, but some of them have different coatings/paint already on them, will that be too harmful to breathe in with ventilation if I tried?
@BurnSavvy
@BurnSavvy 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah pine is OK, not the best but easily accessible. I burned a lot of pine in the beginning. Now I’m kind of a wood snob and would rather not touch it if I don’t have too. 😂 Beech wood is great and you can usually find beech cutting boards and spoons for pretty cheap. I also like the poplar crafting squares (not balsa) for practice. Super cheap and better grain to work with. As for burning painted or treated woods I would certainly avoid it. Go check out the safety tips on BurnSavvy.com to read more about that and about good woods to use. I’ve got several free articles about all that stuff. Hope it helps!

@@BurnSavvy thanks for the tips! My 11 year old neighbor flagged me down as I went to buy groceries this morning to chat and I mentioned I was going to get some wood cause I'm so eager to try it out, but decided against it since it was all slushy and snowy, so she says 'hold on wait right here" and ran out back of the apartment to grab me a mysterious little log that was actually pretty smooth. I have no clue what it was, but besides it being the size of a rain stick, it was pretty good for practice. And it smelled really nice, too! I drew some mandala type stuff to get a feel for the different tips and now I can't wait to try it out on something decent! 😄

Thanks! Company depends on the style of burner you want to get. For solid point, I recommend Walnut Hollow Versatool or the MM Newman Hot Tool. For wire nib my favorite brands are Colwood, Razortip and Optima. I definitely prefer the wire nib tool over the solid point. Hope that helps!

Great question! Not that I have seen in the solid point tools. If you choose to go with a wire nib tool, that will get you much closer to the feel of a pencil. Love mine. That was game changer for me when I upgraded to a wire nib tool. Hope that helps!

That is either a connection issue or a manufacturing decent. If you’ve got it completely plugged into the wall, check all connections - the on button/switch if it has one, the pen to the cord, the nib to the barrel of the pen, etc. If it’s all connected and on, then I would return or exchange it if you can

That’s a very complicated answer that I don’t have room for in a KZbin reply. Depends on the size of the piece, function of the piece, cost of materials, perceived value, etc. In general, charge 2-4x your material cost plus your time. Check competitor prices and see how you compare. I’m planning to do a video on this down the road
