Glad that you posted, I have the same lathe and the part that is behind the front bearing cover that is missing is a flat spring. Good luck with the rebuild.

Thanks for sharing this video, Steve. I bought a lathe just like yours, a Montgomery Ward powr-kraft and I had to take the shaft out because both back gears have a broken tooth. Your video helped me get it out without mishap. The problem is that the spur gear mounted on the flat pulley needs to be either replaced or repaired; I don't even know if it's possible to get the gear off the pulley- it's most likely press fit with a key. I went to the Logan Actuator Co web site because I was told they still have gears for this machine. Sure they do, but expensive as hell. Some gears in the quick change gear box are also shot. Well, and even though I've been a machinist for 30 years, I've never made gears before much less repair them as I've seen Keith Fenner do. Well, this will be a learning experience for me.

I have a 1946 820 and just went with a serpentine belt that I skived and spliced using super glue, has worked great for 5 or 6 years now.

Thanks for the video. That spindle came off easily. Another Logan youtube video suggested a belt from Al Bino Belting in Pa. that you can glue it up on-site without removing the spindle. Since I had my headstock apart anyway (and I don't trust my own glue joints) He sent me a 40" belt already glued up belt and it works great.

I did the same job on my 700. The belt kept wanting to grab when I'd de-tension it so I turned it inside out. Seems to work fine but I have yet to really put it through it's paces.

That can't possibly be good for spindle alignment/accuracy, but hey, it's a quiet belt for just $10. Thanks for the great spindle change demo. Are belts on these even a real wear item on these? I keep mine untensioned when not in use and I've never needed to replace it.
@ClownWhisper8 жыл бұрын
? What can't be good for spindle alignment? That is exactly the process for changing spindle parts.... There is, literally no other way to do thix
@98triffid8 жыл бұрын
To take the spindle apart? Sure. To replace a belt? No. With a leather/composite belt (what these lathes came with) you can just stitch it into place, no disassembly required.
@ClownWhisper8 жыл бұрын
David Regan it is no way bad for the spindle or Associated Parts. I have done this many times is literally a five-minute job

nice modification. thanks for the video and for sharing the part number. how has the belt held up? are you happy with the fit or do you wish you went a little bigger or a little smaller? I'm gonna be doing the same mod on the same machine. thanks.

Great vid! I just picked up a logan 820 and i am going thru a tear down and clean process. I am not repainting it because i like the vintage look but i am going thru it mechanically. Question. Did you buy new head stock bearings or did you just re grease. I think mine might need replaced but i am tearing the headstock apart soon. Thanks for the great vid and i'll try that rubber belt!

Hey i just recenrly acquired the same lathe, looks like you upgraded the countershaft bearings and that whole set up itself. May i ask where did you get that set up?

I just acquired one of these lathes..I do not have the motor with my unit or the table..I did get the back pull unit with it and the large cover unit...I'm wondering if the belt pulley on the motor is flat or v shaped???......your motor pulley looks like it is v shaped....and that you have a flat counter wheel?????....is the large counter wheel v shape...???...or flat like the one I have.....what should I use or run....my counter large wheel is flat..

Hello Steve Harris :I have a 1942 Logan Model 200 that I have stripped down to re-paint and I would like to re-grease my spindle bearing but it looks like it is a sealed bearing or is there a way to take it apart or I'm I missing something , and help would be much appreciated . Joe

mine are/were shielded. I soaked them in gas for 2 weeks, constantly agitating, spinning and changing the gas with fresh. (mine were locked almost solid with gunk) after they were totally clean and dry, I put a large "bead" of grease around the shield and inserted into a vacuum bag used for food storage. 20 seconds later and Bob's you Auntie ! Good as new.

I have a Logan 825 lathe and while checking for wear I noticed some lateral movement of the spindle, i didn’t measure it but just from feel it feels like .020 - .030 does anyone know if this is normal? Or do I need to go in and tighten up the adjustments on the large end bearing?
@522design10 жыл бұрын
You don't have to remove the spindle , I have the same lathe , simply go on e bay and order belt , just measure first , I paid 24$ for split belt works awesome ,

I have that same lathe except with a gear box for cutting threads and the constant slat of the belt joint drive me nuts. I would love to not have to tear the splindle aparts but 522design can you tell me if the split belt is silent or does it made the joint slap?
@mrbreezeet110 жыл бұрын
No, better to pull the spindle, I think, I did the same thing. belt as about $6.00 or $10.00 at Auto zone. It's not hard to pull, came right out. I just used a hammer and punch to loosen the nut on the left. I am working on a wiper motor and PWM controller to drive the leadscrew for a power feed. Will still use my gears if l want to thread.
@pickleboat456 жыл бұрын
the whole idea is to have a modern belt and not a spliced or glued belt. No metal or pins no glue no leather. BTW - I'm retired after 42 years of metal cutting machinery design/engineer. My Logan is a fun hobby. Nice video.

Nice lathe! Check out the channel of Basementshopguy. I saw him changing the flat belt on his South Bends for an orgininal one which can be glued, removal of the spindle being not necessary anymore. Your poly V-belt has the disadvantage that the contact surface is not optimal.
