There are certain letters you don't see often in Afrikaans. * C is such a letter. We use it for names like Christen (Christian), Chinees (Chinese), Chloor (Chlorine), Celsius, etc. * Q is also used for names like Quinton, Queen, etc. * X is for Xhosa. * Z is also not traditional Afrikaans. But we have words we inherited from Dutch, like "zonder" (it became "sonder" in Afrikaans). * Learners of the Afrikaans language will notice that many Afrikaans words are either exactly the same, or almost the same as in Dutch and German. There are even words that are the same as in English. The reason for that is that all 4 languages are Germanian. "Die water is warm" = Dutch. "The water is warm" = English. "Das Wasser ist warm" = German. "Die water is warm" = Afrikaans. "Die water is warm

Congratulations! This lesson was almost perfect. Just a small reminder: The letter "e" is very confusing to non-Afrikaans speakers. In certain Afrikaans words you pronounced it "a", like in "metode" and in "arme". There the "e" sounds like "a". But then, in the word "ek" it is like "example". You never say "ack" (like in "acknowledge") when you refer to "ek" (you and I in English).

Leuk om Afrikaans te leren. Zelf woon ik in Nederland. De r en de g zijn daarom ook niet moeilijk om uit te spreken voor mij. Nice to learn Afrikaans. I myself live in the Netherlands. Because of that, the r and the g aren't difficult to pronounce for me.

Baie dankie. As an ex-pat in South Africa, I have decided it is about time I started to learn Afrikaans. Found this very helpful! How about some examples of spelling out loud, eg. "Vis is geskryf V - I - S" (if that's the correct way to say it?!). I am trying to teach my son the Afrikaans alphabet, so this would be very very useful to me in particular ;-)

FYI, George Takei is Japanese American, not Chinese.
@greppye3 жыл бұрын
George Hosato Takei was born Hosato Takei[7] on April 20, 1937 in Los Angeles, California,[8] to Japanese-American parents Fumiko Emily Nakamura[7] (born in Sacramento, California) and Takekuma Norman Takei (born in Yamanashi Prefecture),[9] who worked in real estate.[10] His father named him George after King George VI of the United Kingdom, whose coronation took place in 1937, shortly after Takei's birth.[11][12] In 1942, the Takei family was forced to live in the converted horse stables of Santa Anita Park before being sent to the Rohwer War Relocation Center for internment in Rohwer, Arkansas.[13] The internment camp was in swamplands which was surrounded by barbed wire fences. The family was later transferred to the Tule Lake War Relocation Center in California for internment.[14] Well spotted!

I know most folks are here for language skills. I was. And I feel compelled to note: George Takei is famously Japanese-American, not Chinese. Given his well-known personal history as a survivor of the Japanese internment camps in the USA during World War II, and his many efforts to document that history and keep it in the public consciousness, it's a big mistake to use his picture to illustrate "Chinees."
