As a teenager, most guys at my school really don't understand "eat big get big", they don't even know how to track calories I'm not even that strong (only recently hit 225 bench), but I was one of the strongest in weightlifting because they wanted to keep their abs and complain about being skinny. And then they have the audacity to make fun of "fat" people (non shredded teens who are GROWING) just because they're not stunting their growth

I'm 6'1" 210 and not fat, the 2nd most athletic guy in weightlifting (both of us were the strongest AND fastest) was 6'2 1/2" 240. Third strongest was 5'10" 220lbs, his bench kinda sucked but his legs were slabs of iron The skinny guys were short (minus one who was full lanklet mode) and underpreforming

Blend 2 cups of whole milk, 2 cups raw oatmeal, 2 or 4 tablespoons of peanut butter, and a banana. Blend that together and have 1 or 2 a day depending on how many calories you require. This is not a meal replacement, this is on top of what food you already eat.

Literally spot on...the moment you start counting your calories...the gym becomes a joke. It takes me 3400 calories to maintain my weight. 3000 to lose weight and 3700 to gain weight. I notice the effects immediately when I start eating 3700. Strength continues to grow. Counting calories honestly turns the gym into a joke. I can tell now just by knowing my body when I'm in a surplus for the day or when I'm in a deficit or when I'm maintaining. As long as you hit your minimum macros then everything is fine too...I go way over on all 3 macros...150g fat 210g protein 350g carbs....that's what it takes to reach a caloric surplus for me.

Pete what's ur height/weight ?
@pete82346 жыл бұрын
178cm 70kg. I'm one of the guys alex is referring to in his videos. The heaviest I've been was 78kg...was much bigger obviously. I was stronger. But I didn't really enjoy the feeling of being bigger. Wasn't as athletic as I am now. I go way over on all my macros like I said but as long as I get that surplus that's all that matters.
@ithinkyoudbesuprised20876 жыл бұрын
Pete nice dude!! I'm the same height as you but roughly 3kg heavier. I have not put on weight at all for the past 2months of consistent lifting, but have progressed on my lifts. Do you mind me asking what your lifts are? So I can see if your calorie needs apply to mine
@pete82346 жыл бұрын
Squat 110kg Bench 80kg Deadlift 160kg OHP 50kg. I'm novice/intermediate. Calorie requirements man are based on your activity. I play soccer twice a week and workout 3x a week. Only train my muscles once a week with PPL. When soccer finishes...3400 calories will probably be enough for me to bulk on and 3000 will be my maintenance.

I used to be the average skinny guy. I had a ripped 8 pack but very little muscle mass all round. I kept telling myself these lies and making excuses, until I finally decided I had enough and sat down with a knife and fork. You can't train your way around a lack of food. I had to force feed. But guess what? I have now gained well over 30 lbs in less than a year. And sure, it's definitely not all muscle but I still have visible abs and my muscles look considerably bigger. I even got a compliment from a guy who looks exactly like I did about a year ago... "I wanna be big, I don't care about abs" "Well at least you have big muscles". I was less than 140lbs at 5'10, >8%bf. I am now 170lbs at approx. 15% bf 6' and I have never felt better about my body. You just need to train hard, and eat harder. Believe in yourself, push your boundaries. Peace out.

Yes it's true that a percentage of novice lifters struggle to gain weight, but there is another group of hard gainers that struggles to gain muscle. I fall into this second category. I can gain weight easily, but it doesn't improve my body composition. I bulked from 115 to 127 pounds in 6 months from August 2017-Febuary 2018 and gained 99 percent fat. I got strong as hell using a system I created that is similar to N.E., but I gained little to no muscle. Diet was on point as well utilizing high protein and strictly calculated macronutrient and micronutrient ratios. My performance results speak for themselves. In my latest videos, I show my ability to incline bench press 135 pounds x 3 and overhead press my bodyweight x 1. I do not have videos of my other PR's; I was also able to rack pull 500 pounds x 5, deadlift 250 pounds x 5, squat 135 pounds x 10 and bench press 170 pounds x 2. My aesthetic results however, are a different story. As you can see, my physique isn't exceptional by any means. I think one thing that a lot of the fitness gurus fail to address is the role that genetic predispositions play in the bodybuilding world and just how influential these genetic factors are. Alex already had a physique better than a lot of beginners when he first started lifting as he mentions in his videos about his background in calisthenic training; even at his lighter weights, he still resembles a mesomorphic body structure. Alex is genetically gifted; he still has visible abs, rounded deltoids, and superb conditioning at every bodyweight and body fat. I am a hard gainer yes-in a different sense. But an ectomorph, not entirely.

@Richard it probably can help, but it happens less than once a week. I think it's caused by eating a large meal an hour after a post workout shake, so maybe I need to wait longer after my shake. Michael, as someone who was able to gain freshman 30lbs in college, I recommend spacing out your meals so that you have time to properly digest them. Otherwise you'll become bloated and lethargic.

Do you believe teenagers should always be in a caloric surplus? (within reason, not obese) Way I see it, if the body is still growing, its more beneficial to have the extra nutrition and calories to ensure optimal growth, whereas a caloric defiency would stunt potential growth, what's your take on this
@oskarsalminen92276 жыл бұрын
I’m 16 and still growing quite a lot and I definitely eat more than someone that’s 25 with my same height, weight, and exercise routine. I am in a caloric surplus relative to that 25 year old but for me (since I’m growing) I am at a balanced caloric state. If I put my height, weight, and exercise routine in a calorie calculator as a 25 year old, I would need to add calories onto that number in order to be eating just the “right” amount of calories.
@AlexLeonidas6 жыл бұрын
Within reason, it makes the most sense. A slight surplus is fine and your body will recomp pretty easily as your hormones change. Worst case calorie maintenance, but I don't advice cutting because I do think it would cause problems long term.

This is accurate but the problem is actually eating more food. If you're never hungry because you're already eating more than your body naturally desires then extra calories from good food is really hard to consume and you will never really enjoy eating. Also, "good food" is usually not very calorie dense so the volume of food is ridiculous.
@selfishindividual10206 жыл бұрын
zoorrken Eating more also costs a lot more money.
@zoorrken6 жыл бұрын
That's true! Things like almond butter is ridiculously pricey here and that's a good source of some extra calories. I personally rather spend my money on food than unnecessary things tho. You'll save some money if you can pick your own wild berries and freeze + mushrooms and even some greens. Berries is a big one, those are pricey over here and you can collect a years supply pretty easily.

@robluce21116 жыл бұрын
This is 1000% true! If you’re having a hard time eating enough calories and protein, try adding boost drinks or ensure in there. Sounds lame but it does work, they’re easy to slam one or two down in the morning or before bed, and that’s a small increase to your daily calories.

soy is 1. a heavily sprayed crop , 2. So if i want protein its going to be pasture raised free range organic eggs, nuts,seeds, wild/ grass fed meat, if you dont want to eat meat i would choose pea protein and hemp milk with seeds,and nuts over soy.IMHO

I am also a naturally skinny guy and when I was at a surplus I would need to eat 3,000 calories and I just never had the appetite. I would feel miserable the whole day because I was force feeding and overall it just was not a good lifestyle for me, but I knew that I had to get these calories in if I wanted to make gains. So to prevent this my advice for meeting your caloric needs would be to space out your meals throughout the day by waiting at least 4 hours before moving on to your next meal. And another thing, try and eat meals that are very high in calories (good macros as well) so this means bigger meals rather than more meals. If you're constantly shoving snacks down your throat every 1-2 hours your body is not going to like that so really space out your meals so you don't feel like shit everytime you eat.

Im always hungry. I used to be 140lbs at 6'2 and started to bulk up. I was new to the whole fitness thing and i took advice from idiots on the internet. I was being told to eat as much as you can, eat till you puke etc. Started consuming about 5000 calories and long story short, gained about 90lbs or 40kg in about a year and was a fat fuck. After that i have always been hungry and have to watch carefully what i eat. i was 15btw

I can totally attest to this. I’m naturally a tall skinny guy. When I was 19 I was 6’1” and 160 lbs I was a ripped landscaper. People at the beach would ask if I’m an mma fighter. I decided I wanted to get huge. I started eating 5-6 times a day and used the portion size method (cause fuck counting calories) and increased either the portion size or the meal number every 3 weeks. I would weigh myself once every 3 weeks as well. The scale said 16 and I would tell myself I’m 167 as well as other people (mind over matter) and every time I weighed myself I would be 4-5 lbs heavier not the full 7. So now I’d be 164-5 and so I’d tell myself I’m 172 etc... oh and I also woke up every single night for 3 months and chugged 3-4 glasses of milk as well. I didn’t know too much about working I just went 3days/week on top of the landscaping and did volume volume volume with light weight bodybuilding style. Literally only deadlifted 135 the entire time. After 3 months I was 190 lbs. and I looked like a different person I has to buy new shirts and pants. First time I ever had fat in my life. Still had abs but couldn’t see my rib muscles anymore and I had a moonface going. After these 3 months I took a 2 week break and because of amazing metabolism I lost the fat and was crazy shredded 180. After that I stopped doing the waking every night to drink milk and I kept doing the gradual portion size method and switched up my training to a more power building system linear periodation. Within a months was deadlifting 315 benching 205 for reps and squatting 315 all for reps. I slowly lean bulked over next year to 195 absolutely shredded those bf scales always say I’m 9. Something percent fat. After that next year I was almost up to deadlifting 500 lbs. so yeah that’s a successful skinny to jacked transmission. Alpha is definitely right guys.

I'm a skinny who's been weight training for 2 years (and I'm a female btw) and although I've put on 7kg or so and I look a lot better than I did, it's still a slow process. I track my calories too, I eat about 1800-2500 a day, most days. My maintenance is about 1400. For me I think it was more the training, i had a hard time increasing biceps for sure. But I learnt I had the bicep form wrong and I keep my elbows right tight to my waist with the curls now and I've also started chin ups which has really increased my arm strength over the last few weeks and I'm growing again. My legs always grew really fast compared to my upper body, I guess because legs are very easy to train (in my opinion).

Trust me I am a hardgainer, IK the concept of hardgainer is bs as Ik if you eat 500kcal above maintainence you will gain mass. But my appeiteite is so bad, I dont enjoy food, I can literally go a day eating one small meal like 400kcal sandwich and not feel hungry.

That's why you don't trust your appetite. You are literally doing the opposite of an obese person's additude. An obese person would say "oh, I eat like a normal person" whilst eating 10k cal/day. A skinny person will say "omg, dude I eat so much man but my metabolism is sooooooo fast" whilst only eating 1200-1500 cal from 1-2 small meals in the day. At least you know that part. But you gotta force fed yourself to the point where the force fed becomes normal and you don't feel stomach pains from it. Natural appetite won't really work for gaining weight in your case. It'll just maintain or cut weight for someone that is skinny.
@rb99516 жыл бұрын
And go out and try out some different foods and find stuff you like. You mostly don't like food because you are eating the same bland stuff over and over. I get the feeling for someone who is years in with bodybuilding. But for someone who is skinny, it's most likely just a completely bland diet with no variety.
@simonghostriley1116 жыл бұрын
rb9951 i started my fitness journey at like 95lb right now im around 130 mainly muscle tbh around 8% bf. As ive gained weight using liquid mass gainers etc forcing it down my appeteite has stayed the same, I wannna keep bulking but as i gain more weight my maintainence goes up so I gotta keep upping calories but my appeteite just wont go up in correlation to bodyweight.
@sentientthundertank20796 жыл бұрын
I totally agree with this, you have to over eat at first to make your stomach sack bigger, once it's bigger and you can hold more food, this will cause your fat deposits to multiply, once that begins, you will see a difference in your gains, I'm nearly 40 I was a skeleton until two-three years, I started by just eating everything, any time there was any space in my stomach I filled it with chips, sweets, sandwiches, anything I could fit in there, over time as I gained weight I started eating more of the right foods.

yep it's true. I'm 6"5 and my diet is shit, I need to pick it up. My appetite is shit in the morning, I wake up late, and 75% of my calories are taken after 7pm. I can do a full week doing a surplus but then I miss two or three days and appetite goes to shit and my weight goes back to the standard. People say they cant make gains because they are skinny yet they say they eat alot, but it's all bullshit.

I might be a special case here. I have been eating in a 1000 calorie surplus. I am experiencing no weight gain AT ALL. I am doing NE. My maintainance is 3000calories and I havent gained weight. I am 6'1 79kg. 19 years old. I've been training for a year and a half. I'm lactose intolerant so I dont consume dairy(if you'd say its an absorption problem). Yes my strength is going up but my weight isnt at all. I would greatly appreciate anyone's help!

Growing up a skinny kid myself (5’9 130) i can 100% attest to this. People think its impossible for them to gain weight but its just not true. I started eating 5x a day with snacks in between religiously and gaining strength and size was no longer a challenge as my strength progressed linearly. People seriously overestimate how much they eat as i did myself.

I used to be a bit buff, but leaned down and now I'm trying to get more into cardio like running. I'm finding out more and more that I don't care for weight lifting and I actually find it to be boring as fuck. Instead, I'm going to look forward to improve my run times and long distance running in general. In fact, I love running even more so than weight lifting. I stick with running because: 1: It's free 2: I don't need to have equipment 3: I don't need to pay for useless gym memberships 4: I don't need to buy home gym equipment 5: If I had to focus on only one muscle in the body during my workouts, it would be the heart because it's one of the most crucial muscles to keep healthy during old age And seeing as I don't date, I don't focus on my appearance too much like bodybuilders do. I'd much rather just focus on cardiovascular fitness because it's the most beneficial aspect of your well being in the long run.

The goal isnt always to gain 'weight' as quickly as possible though. If youre looking for that lean muscle mass at least. Gaining weight slowly and consistently tends to be better if your looking to pack on as much muscle with as little fat as possible.

Tomstaman i did mention weight and not muscle... However, In the past month i have finally beat PRs that I have barely been able to overcome over the year... if anything my stength has definitely increased and overall appearance of muscle in the mirror seems to be better too although my abs are slightly less defined due to an increase in fat

Alpha, do you recommend weighing food out or buying a food scale? I've just recently started to adapt your nutrition philosophy about eating clean, cultural foods. And I was just wondering how you would calculate the calories from foods like broccoli, chicken, fruit, etc without weighing it. Thanks! From Canada as well 🇨🇦

Yo Alex. I've found a way to start gaining muscle, (being really skinny myself) but I have to eat sm food. I'm talking like over 4000 calories to bulk. part of the reason y is bc of my genetics, but I'm not going to use it as an excuse. More so, I'm a runner. Like, running varsity for my high school as a sophomore. There's no way for me to really go bearmode, tho i so badly want to try. I'm at least going to bulk and gain size and strength as much as possible this winter and I can't wait to change my physique to become more "alpha'' in a sense. I listened to your talk about summer bulking and the past couple weeks it's been really working for me. I've got this lean look to me (Ik how u said most people lie about their bodyfat, but anything about 12-15% is chunky for a runner. I've been tested at 8.9, tho with my little summer calorie surplus probably more) and I've realized that i have to start putting on a little size. Ur a great role model for me and i love ur rants. Hope u see this and keep up the amazing uploads :) PS: Can u start implementing more training footage? I really love ur intensity and mindset

@AlexLeonidas6 жыл бұрын
How long have you been stuck at 8 pullups and 35 pushups? If you maintained performance yet gained 12lbs, I'd say that's good because you're heavier yet still repping the same numbers. That said, puberty can also be playing its magic here so it's hard to say what is going on. My advice? Eat more food and train harder my friend :)

If that's the case with your physique and strength levels, then you've not even begun to tap into your novice gains.
