As a 9 year VFX compositor, I cringed at 1:35 when he said "On the flip side, how cool would that be" if they finished 100+ shots within 15 days. I love being in this industry, but a couple things I cannot stand is poor planning that leads to artists slaving away at overtime to get a show delivered, and the glorifying of working those late hours as if they are a badge of honor. There is nothing glorious about taking time away from your friends and family to finish a show. I quit from finishing the season finale of Legion because of the hours they continuously kept asking us to work, which was required because the client could not decide what they wanted, and our studio over-promised what we could deliver. With that being said, you guys are superbly talented and obviously have passion for what you do, so hats off to you, I especially love the VFX artists watching bad/good cgi, I learn a lot of new things from watching those! Keep it up, but don't kill yourself with OT over it (Unless you just love doing OT then good for you!)
@suan_pan5 жыл бұрын
Stephen Holbrook wow you worked on Legion? How was that experience?
@stephen12holbrook5 жыл бұрын
@@suan_pan one of the worst shows Ive ever worked on. Part of Legion's gimmick is being just a weird, bizarre psychedelic show, which would be fine except the client never locked down a concept for all the weird stuff, so they were kinda just making things up as they go, which required us to constantly work overtime because we kept going back to old shots to change things. Its very morally draining when youre working lots of hours but not being efficient about it and feeling like for every step forward, youre taking 3 steps back because things are constantly changing.

Amen to that. I've been in the biz for 12 years and I avoid overtime like the plague. It was fun to rush at the start though, it was exciting. 150 shots in 2 weeks is impossible. I don't think he pulled it off, did he? You could light and comp 150 shots, but not animate them. Animation takes forever. The biggest blockbusters were the hardest on me, especially anything from Marvel. They make crazy changes two weeks before the deadline. They're insane.

4:19 C. Mike seems to not fully get what a 'g' is. a 'g' is 9.81 m/s^2 or the amount of speed you accelerate by in one second of freefall, on Earth. 4 'g's is around the point in which the average person will pass out. Please don't confuse "g" with "G", "G" is Newton's Gravitational Constant for the universe. I timed it out and the merry go round is rotating at 44 frames per rotation, or 41 rpm. If you plug this in for a 6 or 8ft merry-go-round, you get a "g" force of 1.72 "g"s for the 6ft one and 2.29 "g"s for the 8ft one. To actually get 4 "g"s, you would need to achieve 54.17 RPM on the 8ft and 62.55 RPM on the 6ft merry-go-round. If he wanted to feel 4 "g"s he would need to be spinning 32-50% faster. This wasn't made to say "Oh, he's dumb", this was more of a nerdy thing I wanted to do. I hope someone found this funny as I had a blast writing this!

@@discordgarbage627 No it's his job. He has to meet his deadline so the video would still be released on schedule. You can love your work and if you do that's great but when you're working 10+ hour days (including all-nighters from what we say in the video) for 2 weeks because you need to finish a project before going on vacation that's not healthy, that's how you burn out. Production companies in all industries (and I know this first hand, it's my full-time career and I love what I do) plan vacations so that people can schedule workloads around them, this way employees aren't killing themselves & aren't being punished for trying to take time off. Remember this is a business and they are all employees, this might be his project and something he cares for but he must meet production deadlines so the business can maintain its balance sheets and clearly, in the scenario all the responsibility of meeting the deadline fell on his shoulders with zero assistance. If you can't recognize this situation for what it is then you're clearly lacking the maturity to analyze it & haven't worked in a professional industry remotely similar to this one.

@ThatXavier6 жыл бұрын
What do you think of Peter's Spider-man film so far?
@SianaGearz6 жыл бұрын
The shots shown here actually look bloody marvellous, like absolute top notch work! The materials on real-world surfaces might be a tight bit off and a bit gamey looking, but it's better to wait and judge that until it's all edited and colour corrected, and doing better under an enormous time constraint that he's put himself under is pretty much impossible. Might even be an advantage, animated look = further out of the uncanny valley. Animation is impressive, very well flowing, fairly natural looking, whatever faults are there will be easily hidden by frantic camera work, i mean i can see that if i was watching it all the time in a loop, i would find more and more things that look out of place, but i think it's kind of good to stop overcorrecting these things and just let them be, will possibly make for a much better product as a result. If you look at Monty Oum's animations (RIP) like Dead Fantasy and yes don't look at materials and rendering, it was rendered on a 2004 dumpster laptop with the notoriously inefficient Poser, you will... you will not notice all the impossible foot or shin or arm rotations, or most other animation mistakes really, and that's the kind of work that would be considered entirely too sloppy and full of mistakes by professional standards of the industry, but damn if it doesn't just flow so well! I guess it'll take until i can see more footage to judge, but Peter's work doesn't look entirely too bad at all.
