Hi, good job on the progress ;). For feedback: the stream of comments in the first level is too constant which makes him feel quite annoying. Also I think it would feel awesome if he reacted instantly when he's talking something and you show it to him before he finishes. For example stopping the talk about the double jump when you double jump and reacting in this fashion "oh, exactly this, so you can learn". Keep up the work and I'm looking forward to seeing the game finished.

@@JonasTyroller Have to agree with Xuan. One thing you COULD do to make it funner for someone that knows games a lot is to skip voicelines for things you previously completed already. And if you complete too many already switch to a "Oh you think you're such a clever snail" and spawn a bunch of spikes around the character and skip the rest of the initial tutorial entirely. A player that's already doublejumping and zooming through the room probably will have a good laugh at that!

Wow, that’s a lot of voice lines! The game looks really cool and I can’t wait for it to come out! I had an idea that maybe for one level you could try program an AI that has an array of short phrases that it patches together depending on what the player is doing, so the sentences are really messed up but still sort of make sense, maybe you damage the AI in some way and so it’s computer-brains are messed up. Anyway, the aesthetic of this game looks so bright and neon, and it definitely attracts any player’s attention. Also the platformer controls look really smooth and satisfying to use, I am definitely playing this when it comes out! I also can’t wait to see the overall storyline of this game unfold, can’t wait for release!

An arbitrary menu is not a good way to adjust the difficulty. How is the player supposed to know how easy is easy, how medium is medium or how hard is hard? They just have to guess. Because there are games where easy is medium, medium is hard and hard is extra hard. And for other games, easy is impossible to lose, medium is extra easy and hard is easy. Also, how easy should be easy, how medium should be medium and how hard should be hard, are different to each player. The developers' and players' definitions of easy, normal and hard almost never line up. A much better way to manage difficulty, is by making the game harder for those who want it to be harder, by including optional challenges (take the Star Coins in New Super Mario Bros. games as an example), that players who don't want any additional challenges, can simply ignore.
@JonasTyroller5 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately I think only making the game harder with additional challenges is not an option for this game as the game is designed as a bit of a rage game so I want everybody to play on a difficulty where it's possible but tough to beat the levels. Finding that difficulty is obviously a very tough challenge as well, especially for players. That's why I decided to go for dynamic difficulty at first where you can't choose it yourself and the game adjusts it depending on your performance. However that felt frustrating to some people as well as they noticed how the game became easier and easier over time... :D It's a tricky problem. What I'm trying now is basically dynamic difficulty at the beginning of the game so you don't have to select it yourself and the game will probably pick a good one for you (and even adjust it if need be) but the player is still in control of it via the menu. I feel like that might be a good middleground but I'll have to explore... :) In general I'd totally agree with your statement.
@CrazyGamesMinecraft5 жыл бұрын
@@JonasTyroller Maybe find another name? Like instead of normal use "recommended" and instead of easy you could use something along the lines of "relaxed". So it's clear, what's the intended way of playing your game and players have at least a grasp of what the difficulty could be like
@enderspirit52385 жыл бұрын
@@JonasTyroller As a player, I don't like the concept of dynamic difficulty, especially for challenging games because it remove one of the core aspect of these games : the sentiment of accomplishment. But if we introduce dynamic difficulty, it nullify that : I didn't win because I became better but because the game just became easier. I am huge fan of games like Celeste or Super Meat Boy and I don't think that multiple levels of difficulty are the answer, when I play these types of game, I trust the game designers and I want to experience the game exactly as they intended it. For example, Hollow Knight don't have any difficulty setting, but the difficulty setting is in the game itself, if you are stuck against a boss, you go for health or offensive upgrades, you try different charms combos or just become better. However I'm comparing a metroidvania to a platformer which is not fair here. But why not the Celeste approach ? Celeste is a really challenging platformer game without any difficulty setting however they have an amazing "assist mode" that you can activate in the options. When you want to activate it, the game warns you that it will break the experience as the designers originally intended it and that you should use it only if the difficulty is too daunting for you. It is just an idea, I don't know if it could fit in this game but it worked for Celeste. We can also take a look to Super Meat Boy, there is no difficulty setting but every level has a dark side which is a harder version, if you feel that the dark levels are too hard for you, then you just stick to the original experience : the normal mode, this is like a new game plus, this could also lead to another bonus ending for people who want to do that. Multiple difficulty levels can also set some problems for speedrunners : which one the should use ? Should they make three different categories for every difficulty level (Easy/Normal/Hard) ? But then they will need to multiply this number by 2 or more (Any%, 100%...). Which one is the "real" experience ? Anyway, these are just some thoughts I have as a player, I want your game to succeed, good luck with With You Snail. :)

Thank you very much for the feedback. I personally feel like these words help to make the AI feel less generic and less like other AI characters. So you're getting rid of the dynamic difficulty? Why? Last time we talked about it you were super confident in this system. (Starting to see a pattern here, the first dynamic difficulty system was also scrapped :D) About the new introduction: I think it'd be kind of cool if the AI was introduced a little more slowly so it feels more impactful once it appears. Also, right now it seems to babble nonstop. It's very hard to keep track of what it says. Add some pauses in between lines. It feels really cool that the AI is conversing so much with the player now though. That's really cool, can't wait to try it again. I laughed at the recommendation to make you feel as dumb as possible, that was funny :D
@JonasTyroller5 жыл бұрын
I didn't really explain the current approach that well in the video. I'm taking a route in between now. The difficulty is a tricky problem in this game because it is so essential to the experience. I want everybody to be quite challenged while also making sure almost everybody can complete the game. Dynamic difficulty feels frustrating when you notice how it reduces the difficulty for you. Picking the difficulty yourself at the beginning of the game is a dumb idea as well as there is no way to tell what means what. My next experiment (the route in between) is: Dynamic difficulty at the beginning of the game and in extreme scenarios where the player is stuck for a long time or rushes through levels way too quickly BUT also allowing the player to change the difficulty as well. So if you disagree with a change the AI makes to your difficulty you can change it back. I renamed the difficulties to Easy, Very Easy, Extremely Easy and Infinitely Easy to obscure their actual difficulty as much as possible so people don't have to feel bad switching between them or feel as bad when the AI switches for them. The difficulties feel more like an ironic joke now which I think is probably good. I hope the pattern you're seeing is that I'm getting closer to the solution and not that I'm going insane. ha.. .Hahahaha....
@bluegoodev20855 жыл бұрын
I liked the way Call of duty did it (modern warfare 2 and probably more) with a training level. Depending on the time it took you to complete it, it recommends a level and you can choose a higher one or play it again until you are ”an expert” :)

Oh boy. I can so relate to the beginning of the video. I wanted to have a little piece playable for friends who'll visit tomorrow and the stuff I wanted to complete took twice as long as I intended. It's a bit frustrating to know that the scale I envision for my game will take yeeeears to finish. I think I need to come up with a plan of how to put a lot of stuff into the game without much work or to phrase it better: Pump out the easy stuff that feels like a lot even when it isn't. It's usually the most time-consuming things that feel like you get the least done, i.e. implementing core systems. 10:38 I love these tiny bits where you "go crazy" and then cut off early. Exactly my kind of humor :D 11:27 Yeah, how much "porogress" did you make? :D I like how the AI keeps in the background when not talking. The talking however, isn't the easiest on the ears. Maybe have a filter option to make it sound a little smoother? I don't know how much work that is though. I guess if the effects are already made in the DAW, that'll be too much of a time sink.
@JonasTyroller5 жыл бұрын

I like the new intro idea more. Very funny also :D BUT the AI seems to be lacking behind quite a bit. You can already move and jump while the AI is introducing itself and the game. For some feedback, building on what others have said, I think the robot effect is cool but hearing it without breaks makes it a bit monotonous and kind of grinds you down a bit. Also maybe you could consider having some slight tone variations within your voicelines. Some could be slow and serious, others maybe sound a bit higher-pitched if that makes sense. So that its still a robots voice but a robot that talks in a slightly more human way I reckon would make it heaps more effective to listen to.

Thank you. Hmm. Maybe it has a bit too many high frequencies which makes it sound a bit annoying. I know what you mean...

I learned a lot of LUA scripting language. (Because I develop games in Roblox, if you know what that is.) But I wanna learn c# now so I can make a real game. It’ll be easier now bc I already learning lua and I’m programming a robot with a few more people.

The new voicelines and the speed test are pretty cool because it's much more engaging but at the very beginning maybe it should be dark for a short moment and then the AI appears lighting the room because the sudden beginning can be a bit overwhelming. Btw the original design of the AI was so good why did you change it?
@JonasTyroller5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your feedback. This AI design creates less visual clutter on the screen and allows you to focus more on the actual gameplay plus I think it blends in a lot better stylistically speaking. Hopefully you'll fall in love with it when the new facial animations are in. :P I agree with you. The AI appears a bit too suddenly. I'll have to find a bit of a different solution for that. :)

Game looks dope, just don't forget to make the text and the voice lines the same, otherwise it could be confusing for the player if the AI is saying something a little bit different than the text

Oh yes, absolutely. We'll have to do a lot of hunting for that in the end. Thank you. :D

I love the tutorial but it does seem a little weird for the AI to be helping you. Maybe throw in a line about how ‘he wants to get to the part where you die’ or something.
@JonasTyroller5 жыл бұрын
Good point. My explanation for it would be that the AI wants to play the game (aka killing you) but also wants to make sure it's a bit of a challenge. That's why it's teaching you. Otherwise it would be too easy. You're right that that doesn't really come across that well so far. Thanks a lot for your useful feedback. :)

Why are there so incredibly many if then else trees in that voice over script? Personally I always get very itchy when I have that because it would suggest me that I haven’t found a good algorithm, yet. But perhaps this system you are using is that limited and in that case the question: “why no do it in C#?”

one tiny thing - maybe add a larger pause between the voice lines because sometimes it feels like the AI is just saying loads of stuff not separate messages

Random question: Do devs tend to make FPS shooters and games that require precision platforming easier on console than on PC? I would have thought that if the difficulty of the console and pc version were the same this would, in effect, result in the pc version being easier because it's easier to aim with a mouse than a controller.
@JonasTyroller5 жыл бұрын
That probably depends on the game. I think for percision based platformers like Celeste or Super Meat Boy it's probably not necessary as that becomes only slightly harder with gamepad. For shooters it's probably more of a concern but I've never worked on so I can't tell you for sure how that is handled. For single player shooters there are often different difficulty settings anyways and sometimes console players get a bit of aiming assistance from the game... Hmm

Maybe we compare our current progress to our earlier progress, as in programming we seem to learn and implement the initial things very quickly compared to the later things.

At the moment Trello for keeping track of tasks and Google Sheets for my production plan / timeline. At the start when the AI is explaining the controls there might be a small little problem. What if a person didnt quite catch a line what was being said? Will the text stay up until they figured it out? Not that people don't know what to do, for example the small jump, and get stuck in the tutorial
@JonasTyroller5 жыл бұрын
I've already partially considered these issues. If you don't follow a command the AI will repeat it till you do or if it's not that important (like the low jump) eventually drop it and move on. Then the basic controls are also repeated in the race in room 2. Still I think you're absolutely spot on. The least thing I should do is putting some big and permanent button prompts onto the screen. Thank you. :)
