Just curious, if everyone starts doing a passion project(or atleast a good chunk of people), it would not remain a wow factor anymore. What would be the next step? Curing cancer?
@spysearice5695
@spysearice5695 3 жыл бұрын
By definition, passion projects aren't very constrained, so I doubt it'll lose all its potential as a wow factor as popularity increases. I'd actually argue that you could draw a parallel between passion projects and essays, in that certain topics can become overdone and cliche with either (think community service), but that doesn't detract from the medium as a way of conveying your personality or capabilities.

@Gold Award by Lauren Well, being of service to others(such as volunteering) has just become a cliche activity that everyone does these days and has basically lost its value. It has to be something at an adult level.

HS students at my school routinely take up valuable lab spaces and professor time at local state colleges to pad their college applications. Ironically, they soak up resources of the very minority students they proudly boast to support. These days the Ivys and other "highly" selective colleges are mostly full of slightly above average IQ students who know how to game the system and are willing to pay any price to attend. This shouldn't be shocking since the elite schools themselves routinely hyper-inflate or flat-out lie about SAT scores and yields in order to game the rankings.

I kind of did this without realizing it, didn't end up seeing if it would work for admissions because I made it my full time activity after graduation. My unqualified advice would be to not do it by yourself, way easier with social proof and support, and way less meeting weird strangers to try to make something happen. Also feel like the people that can really pull this off are the same group that don't actually need the credentials anyway. Looking at my own situation I thought I didn't at first, but now realize credentials would help. This is also something that you should do in addition to maintaining the highest level of academic performance, unless it has huge significance to overcompensate for the lack of academics.

I literally have already did all of these in my passion project. I started a Japanese club at my school, first club started by a student at my school, I teach the other members japanese while also learning Japanese myself, it's something I wish to make part of my career. You're really telling me that I can get into my top choice college with this.

When it really comes down to it the most important thing in your application is a massive spike of unique diverse achievement. Being passionate about it certainly helps, but just pick something niche and explode into it until you are the highest level of achievement possible - anyone can get in if they do that and don’t give up on it.

Many of my business majors start a business. Dog walking, tutoring, reselling candy/food at school, and babysitting clubs tend to be less impressive than ideas that are more outside the box, part of some startup incubator, or product sales. For me, my passion project wasn't finished yet at the time of my application deadlines due to the pandemic and other circumstances outside of my control. I actually even used that story to write one of my college essays, and I found out later on that it's a good thing I did so because it showed a lot about my character and my desire to serve in a different light not typically seen in other submitted applications. So if you haven't finished it yet; that's ok. You do need to make sure though that you state that you do intend to keep working on your project even after the application deadline. Also, if the school you are applying to allows for you to send emails to their admissions team, email them about the status of your project if a positive development has occured with it. This shows that you've kept on working on the project, which could only help your chances of getting in. I know all of this because I was in the same position before. I was afraid that I would get rejected by my dream school, but somehow I convinced two U.S. Federal Military Academies to take a chance on me. Trust me; as long as you just continue to do your best with your passion project, everything will fall into place. Some college will see your efforts, and they'll want you. And if that doesn't happen, they've missed out on someone amazing. I hope that in whatever you decide to do, you enjoy doing it because that matters the most. God bless ;)

So, I'm a published author/poetess. I published a collection of poems a couple of years ago, and I'm currently working on a new collection of poems. I mentioned both in my application because this is something I'm currently doing and it means a lot to me. So no, it doesn't have to be complete.

I would say do the projects that you felt are the most significant to you and you genuinely care about the most. And if you can’t decide then also consider what will look best in relation to your career and the rest of your application. Example: I am applying as a architect who will also focus on sustainable design My passion project: starting an environmental club and teaching young kids how to draw

so i got involved with an organization that spends time at childrend cancer hospitals, most of the kids are permanently there and i with a few other people go there weekly to spend time with them and teach them chess.(Im in the top ten in my category in my continent when it comes to chess) i know it doesnt seem like it has much to do with biology and medicine, but if you get involved with something like this you can talk about how much it has impacted you and what youve learned from it, but also how much its inspired even more to want to go into that field, how you want to help ppl etc

@JustAnotherLokiStan 2 жыл бұрын
You don't. Research is a very elitist activity, not only do most countries not have research opportunities for high school students, even in countries that do have them, only the rich kids can afford to do it-cuz let's be real, the whole "I walked up to a professor and asked them if they'll let me research in his lab" is bs. It's not that easy. Most professors have no time for kids fooling around in their labs. So research is honestly really stupid in most cases. Because of the above reason, doing research comes across has something very superficial that you did just for college, and you'll only hamper your application. There are exceptions, of course, but the exceptional kids who DO commit to a research project for years on end are still rich, resourceful and connected. It's literally impossible for middle/lower class kids to even think about conducting actual research. So if you don't have a research project, it's not gonna hurt you.

The life you present to a university that you hope will accept you needs to be *organic* If you attempt to throw together “ECs” that are not things you would be doing if you had no intention of going to university - the admission officer will know it and it’s not a great look. YT is rife with videos telling people to contrive such basically false pictures and claiming it worked for them. Avoid this.
