Oh dear. The Schpirrer-Farben! That purple and green in the Etchr set too, yikes! Thanks for sharing. I would totally be interested in the Etchr giveaway. Was it the color selection or the way the paint performed that caused you to not enjoy that set as much?
@MirandaWatsonArt3 жыл бұрын
Yes, those were really fugitive. As far as the Etchr watercolors, they are hard to re-wet and some of the colors just don't have the payout that I was hoping for. I'd like to give them away because I know I would never reach for them first even if I wanted to paint with something different. Other than those 3 or 3-1/2 colors, though, the lightfastness has been far more impressive than I had hoped. I would send these to you in a heartbeat if you were planning on doing a review on your channel with them! Let me know. :-)
@katarinaholik3 жыл бұрын
yeah some of the purple pigments are problematic so no surprise for the purple.
@KimberlyCrick3 жыл бұрын
@@katarinaholik I was surprised because it's supposedly made from PV23 dioxazine, not the cheaper pv3 or the common fugitive red/pink dyes mixed with blue in most bargain sets. The PV23 in most pro brands like dsmith/winsor/schmincke/rubens can surpass a full year of sun without any fading. There's probably fillers/undisclosed additives in the Etchr paints sadly. I was less surprised about the green after seeing it was mixed with PY74, that yellow reliably fades in mixtures.
@KimberlyCrick3 жыл бұрын
@@MirandaWatsonArt I'd love to review them and have been meaning to work on an Etchr brand overview video and webpage entry since I've collected some other stuff from them like the sketchbooks and ceramic palettes. Have you tried the metallic Etchr colors? I haven't yet, but they look like they are made by Superior (artsy/tinge) the brand that so often copies Paul Rubens but never gets the quality right lol. I'd be happy to send you some stuff too, I'll think about what I have extra of and make a list. Maybe we can have a fun swap of goodies :D I'll send you an email soon!

Since you were kind enough to share your lightfast test results, I thought I could take the time to do a Google expedition to see if I could find that artist’s name. I know I hate when stuff like that happens (when I can’t quite make out a name etc.). So anyway, I found it! Herb Mignery is his name. Thank you for sharing your results, and your artwork!

I'd love to see you do a painting with both the lightfast and non lightfast paints and see a practical demonstration of how fading paints look in art. I love Paul Reubens, they were my first "grown up" paint. Now I'm pretty much a Daniel smith girl. Love your piece.

Okay, I'm definitely doing that! It actually occurred to me this morning when my video released and I was looking at the title that it could have been interpreted that I also had a painting that was lightfast tested. When I realized that, I was kind of sad that I didn't have one! So yep, definitely doing that. Thanks!

Paul Rubens held up amazingly well! I'd love to get a set of those, and it's great to know they won't budge in sunlight. Not a surprise that Daniel Smith did well; all of those colours are rated excellent lightfastness from what I remember. That Schpirrer-Farben set's a total bust, eh! 😂 Etchr held up pretty well too, all things considered. Very useful tests, I am so thankful you've done them because they take ages to set up, lol. I love using old calendar pictures for references. I have an entire drawer full of them, and soon there will be a whole load more to add into the collection from this year. I like the cute illustrations in the calendar you used, and your painting was great! I love the sketchy look....really fun! ❤ P.S I love the finished Aspen tree painting too!
@MirandaWatsonArt3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Becky! This was a fun video to do for so many reasons... First, the paints (other than S-F and 3 Etchr colors) were all amazing. Secondly, YES, calendars make awesome references, and I love to keep them around. Third, I've been dying to do that painting! I can't wait to look at the other tests I have in the window when their time comes. I finished one more Aspen tree painting today, too, so more updates to come!

I know we've looked at the Schpirrer-Farben before but what strikes me this time is - even the earth tones turned to grey. That's very unusual, so maybe it indicates that they were not even bothering to use PBr 7 or PR 101. Which is odd, because those pigments are really cheap. Perhaps they are dye-based rather than pigment based. It looks like the phthalo green and blue were the only ones that survived.
