That are cool results! Many of the colours I don't have and it's always interesting to see how they behave. About the PB27: Even if it fades in sunlight, it comes back after a while in the dark. A friend who is a chemist wrote an article about this pigment and the properties, which was very informative. During our tests we have experienced, that companies only rate fading when they rate lightfastness, but not the change of hue. So a colour, that changes hue is still considered lightfast by most companies. A weird example of good lightfastness rating is Cobalt Yellow, which changes from a lovely yellow to a weird greyish brown in sunlight over a longer time (at least in my case). So independent lightfastness tests like these are important. :)
@renmuffett Жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing. Many pigments that are listed with low lightfast ratings actually do not fade at higher saturation loads. But if you thin it down to a lighter gradated wash, thats when you see the fading. They fade in the lighter wash. Your Permanent Carmine looks to have developed a bloom because of a wetter wash on top that made the wash lighter. I don't think thats from fading.

I was hesitant to buy anything than the highest lightfastness, but some of the 3 star colors held up better than higher ones. Might give them a try now, thank you!

interesting video, but, lightfastness is about not only fading, but also colour shift. besides, lightfastness of masstone, might differ greatly when testing diluted colour.

Thanks for sharing this! I did read that fading is much more likely in a weak tint, so if you ever do this again you might want to test tint as well as masstone.

I am blown away by the test on Scmincke's Saturn Red! All of your tests turned out as I expected with the exception of that one, it is definitely not lightfast. I expected to see a little fading on their PV42 Magenta (one of my favourites) as I'm aware that it is not perfectly lightfast, but not terrible either. Schmincke gives their PV42 3/5 stars while Saturn Red PO64 has 4/5, but Saturn was definitely one of the worst. Happy to see some tests on PR187 across a few brands though, my favourite red looks excellent.

Brilliant! Thank you for that! I love the website handprint! this is such a useful video, I should do one as well, though I should probably wait for next spring/summer for the strongest sun. Auerolin yellow is stated as to avoid by handprint, I see it's confirmed here. I'm annoyed that watercolor books still recommend it. PV19 is actually not great when it's the pink hue, the violet hue however is supposedly better. For pink I like to use PR122 and from your tests, it seems good on all brands (my favorite is from a small belgian brand, "isaro") Anyway, I will start the testing myself as well on those I have! Also, you forgot to add the end screen (you know with the subscriber button and the recommended videos) Again, thank you!
@LanaGoesArt4 жыл бұрын
Hi! PR122 can be a tricky one too, I've seen it fade too quiet a bit during lightfastness tests sadly. But it's good to stay away from the PY40. Books suggest it, because it was one of the first transparent yellows available and got suggested because of that - if I recall correctly. Now we have other yellow pigments, that are transparent and lightfast.
@stephanie.kilgast4 жыл бұрын
@@LanaGoesArt ah, too bad about the pr122. I will make my lightfast tests then, so I know what to expect from my paints!
@LanaGoesArt4 жыл бұрын
@@stephanie.kilgast That might be the best. It also depends on the light and where you are located. My PY40 had more of a colour change than the one shown in the video for example. I've collected my results in a database, so it's easier accessible. :)

Wow, I’m surprised about the Prussian Blue. I heard that PB27 was fugitive, but then when out of the light would sometimes return to its original colour. Also, the deep reds did really well. Thanks for the upload.
@teohyc4 жыл бұрын
Me too. Maybe it's not out in the sun for too long.
@vespercolours57284 жыл бұрын
Prussian Blue PB27 itself is not really fugitive. It will lighten somewhat in the sun, but then quickly stabilizes and will not lighten further. The colour will restore itself in the dark. If an artist is aware of this and plans their work around it, it can be fine. The real problem with PB27 though is that it can react with some other pigments or filler, extender, or brightener that is added to the paint. In the case of Antwerp Blue, it is actually a blend of PB27 and a white extender, usually PW22 (barium sulfate), sometimes zinc white (PW4). Antwerp Blue will not recover after being in the sun as this reaction is permanent. I believe the only "filler" that W&N adds to their Prussian Blue is dextrin so that's why their' version came out very well in the lightfast test while Antwerp Blue did not.
@SoulKeever4 жыл бұрын
This was interesting. You should test the tints in addition to the masstones so we can see how durable they really are. There didn't look like a lot of difference in some of the samples, and they're always strongest when concentrated anyhow.

Dont know why people dont give them more credit! Maybe now that people see that daniel smith is not always yo p front about there colors.....people will give winser newton the respect it deserves!! And u can make all the new craze colors by mixing! Thank them for saving u money!! As for there student grade.....I see why bbn its nesisary....but they could up there game a lil I feel. There pro grade they could up there game as well just to help get new artist into there family. A couple trendy colors or coming GB up with there own convenient colors...would be a start. But making a pallet with say 12 to 18 colors, along with a mixing guild on what colors mix well and what bbn u can do with ur small selection....would greatly help me and many others who just like to make art for fun every now and then.

Thank you, there were a few colours I was concerned about and was glad to see they haven't changed a slightest. I wish you would also make a diluted swatch next to a full strength one, since some colours are fine in concentrated amount but fade when diluted or in mixtures. It is a bit of added work though.

DaVinci has an Aureolin (PY40) that has some PY3 mixed in (nonetheless, another not perfectly lightfast color!) that they have somehow done some magic on and it is rather lightfast! Others have had this result in their tests and I tested it myself with this result. I don’t care that much, but if someone just LOVES Aureolin...

Hi Teoh! For this video would be really valuable you'ld have to compare your experience with the note given by the brand. If the brand note one star or " I " or two, it is evident the result would not be excellent comparing to a three, four or five stars. Also, paintings are not supposed to sta in front of the sun. And for frame works, if they are high professional works that people want to keep for 50 years and more they can frame it anyway with a anti-uv glass if they doubt of the lasting time.

Thanks for this video, in particular for the van gogh lavendar. i wanted the daniel smith version but i couldnt justify the cost when i already have and use the van gogh version, its nice to know it will hold up. Can you include van gogh prussian blue in your next test? I have noticed in my use that it holds up better than the daniel smith prussian and thought i was seeing things until i saw a note on handprint.com confirming that the van gogh prussian was indeed highly lightfast. Good news but surprising since handprint usually sticks to professional paints.

You kept those behind glass or outside for 6 months? Glass blocks UV part of the spectrum almost entirely, so that might explain why there's no to little fading.
@teohyc4 жыл бұрын
But there are colours that fade
@jyotasama4 жыл бұрын
Not UV. You have to be specific and say UVB because glass doesn't block UVA
@spiritsjoy4 жыл бұрын
So you hang your artwork outside in the elements? How realistic is that? Teoh and many others who test on a window is fine and actually extreme since most of us hang art on an inside wall.
@b005t3r4 жыл бұрын
@@spiritsjoy of course not, that's not the point. All paints will fade with time, but here, when most of the UV light was blocked, it's actually hard to tell which ones will fade faster. There were a few which faded completely though, so for these ones we know they are not lightfast at all, for others it's impossible to tell which ones are more lightfast.
@marisawu36464 жыл бұрын
Łukasz Łazarecki it’s rather unrealistic to keep these out in the open for six months as the seasons change. Since all of them were “behind” the very SAME glass that means the results are still well-balanced as they were affected by the same amount of UV rays.
@MedaHalmaciu4 жыл бұрын
What do you do with the color that turned out not to be light fast. I am currently testing some white nights colors as well, namely the non-lightfast ones to se what happens. Then I'll isolate them in a separate palette for personal work only. I like how some colors are aging.

Teoh, have you had any issues with Daniel Smith’s French Ultramarine drying up? I’ve recently put tube paints into a pan and my French ultramarine shrunk significantly and hardened to where it’s slightly cracking. The rest of my paint from the essential set did not do this. I was wondering if it’s common for this particular color. Thanks!
@teohyc4 жыл бұрын
DS French Ultramarine behaves like that. Many brands also behave like that. Not a big deal though since they can rewet well. You just have to squeeze the paint into the cracks.
