Customer approved the replacement of the suspected WEAK FUEL PUMP that's causing a severe lean condition and hard warm start on this beautiful 2002 Toyota 4Runner.
Replacing the pump involves dropping the rusty fuel tank.
How can we be 200% CONFIDENT that we're replacing the RIGHT PART?
IVAN'S PICO WAVEFORMS:

Enjoy!

I was thinking the same thing except Dremel with a cutoff wheel. Before cutting, though, you need to check for things underneath that shouldn't be cut like a skin stiffener or stringer. Those dimples in the floor are stiffeners. Unibody vehicles may have longerons or stringers that don't just stiffen but also are the strength. Since this is an SUV, I doubt there's any structural aspect to that floor. Worst case is that it might oil can after cutting some of the dimpling out.

When checking fuel pump, always take into consideration the battery condition and alternator output. I had an older Dodge Caravan that had weak fuel pump flow barely trickling out and a weak red spark. It was also cold weather below freezing and this thing wouldn’t start even with starting fluid. Spark plugs wore out so I installed new plugs and wires. Replaced coil too, but still had weak red spark and then noticed very little fuel pump flow. Connect the jumper cables and it started. Recommended a new battery and off she goes. Got a call a month later and battery was stone dead. Alternator took a crap. Before checking anything electrical, make sure the battery is good and alternator is fully working! Avoid these comebacks or misdiagnosis. Oh when customer says I just replaced alternator or battery. That don’t mean anything. Sometimes they claim I just installed a new alternator and battery 6 months ago, when it been 3-5 years ago. But replacing parts doesn’t mean it’s good anyhow. When customer claims it can’t be this or that, you must explain this to the customer. Battery cranks car, these days it doesn’t necessarily mean the battery is up to specs. The 12v battery system has met its limitations. Cold weather tells the tale.

On critical parts, if the OEM is in perfect condition after 15 years, I keep them. Just because they throw in some segments of hose doesn't mean they arent chinesium. Good call on the fuel pump. Every symptom pointed to a fuel pump from the start. I had this exact scenario with a GMC van 20 years ago. I paid a local shop to diagnose the cause of these same symptoms and ended up paying for a spark plug wire and was returned a lazy vehicle that got great mileage. It was a pre-OBD II vehicle. After a while it got so hard to start I pulled a fuel line and nothing came out. Pumped out 30 gallons of fuel because at the end it would only run when near full. $20 fuel pump make it like new. I'm a much better mechanic now I have KZbin and time to think. I no longer send things out for repair. Thanks for all you do for DIY and also for shops willing to listen.

I had a customer call me for a new fuel pump that was an in the tank , it was pumping no fuel but running like a champ in the tank. I tapped a screwdriver on the bottom of the tank and heard a hollow sound , with a fuel sending unit saying it had a half a tank. I added 5 gallons of gas to the tank and the gage didn’t move but the car started and ran. She settled for filling the tank and not replacing the sending unit. Two years later she still liked counting the miles for approximation of gallons in the tank and not replacing the sending unit

Nice pleasing result and the Denso pump kit made it easy & confidence inspiring. Right choice of replacement parts is almost as skilled as diagnostics, you really need know who makes/packages what and keep up with constant supply source changes of aftermarket have half a chance of buying wisely . OEM parts on the important stuff pretty much always pays off . If only Toyota had made a full access panel under the seat .Dropping the tank for a pump was pretty stupid engineering design choice ...

I went through this with my 2009 Scion xB (2AZ I4) Hard starting, vapor locking, long crank I sent the injectors out for cleaning and flow testing, they were badly restricted (they cleaned up) I had an exhaust leak at the donut gasket, throwing off fuel trims (I repaired) Then, finally, at 285k miles, the (in hindsight weak) factory fuel pump bit the dust Replacing the pump breathed new life into the old 📦 Some repairs are one step forward, two steps back

Great job explaining how to positively ID a weak fuel pump. I’m surprised it lasted a year without failing. Also surprised all those parts would be replaced without once testing fuel pressure. I’ve been around since before OBD 1 & 2 so that was pretty routine to test FP pressure first. And a Schrader valve would have been nice rather than assuming T’Yota pumps don’t fail 😳 I applaud you for working in that kind of weather. If we had that much snow we would have been cleaning floors and tools at our shop cause no one would drive in that mess. Heck I won’t drive in it anymore either. 🥶🥶 Del in Ky

Awesome! My used car I purchased had the "hot soak" issue and was running lean. It would misfire after sitting 15-20 min. also misfire after driving about 10 miles. It would sometimes throw a code for misfire cylinder 5. Cylinder 5 was the last cylinder on the fuel rail. The problem was someone changed just the fuel pump not the assembly. They failed to properly connect the pump to the fuel line in the tank. It was losing fuel pressure and would also get air bubbles in the fuel line. After replacing the fuel assembly my car ran fantastic! 2004 Lincoln Town Car with 101,000 miles Florida car. No rust! lol

Nice job, current ramps will usually tell you all you need to know about the fuel pumps condition, in this case current was low because the pump was either leaking internally or could not reach the RPM required for good fuel pressure. I usually would do current ramps on fuel pumps with intermittent no starts, you can usually see the current drop out when it hits the bad segment(s) of the pump.

I know that in my 5.7 litre Chevrolet LS1 V8 powered Holden VY SS Commodore that I was worried that the Long term fuel trims were sitting at about 21% & the engine almost didn't start the morning that I took it to the mechanic to get the annual pink slip registration inspection done on December 20 last year because in the past a bad fuel pressure regulator has caused the high fuel trims plus a check engine symbol to turn on the LCD part of the instrument cluster. I was getting at least a P0171 and sometimes a P0174 lean code. This time the fuel trims went back down to the single digits when I did the 40,000 kilometre or 24,000 mile fuel filter change,I blew it out & it was full of dirt. The fuel economy display has also been showing a higher than normal fuel consumption readout as well but it the fuel trims are back to normal then I'm not worried. It uses the SAE J1850 VPW pre CAN GM OBD2 protocol as well, not the ISO15765 CAN OBD2 protocol which the 6 litre L76 V8 engines were ran by in the series 2 VZ SS Commodore in 2006 !

First couple of times watching a PHAD video I thought it was perhaps too slow, as you explained every step and showed why this was tested and when. Now I understand your love of teaching people about diagnostics and the importance of not skipping small steps and checks to avoid incorrect conclusions. The most frustrating thing about your videos is the failure of automobile manufacturers to make small changes that would vastly improve access to parts of diagnosis of faults. I understand that it saves a few cents, and that adds up, but having a auto that’s built to easily diagnosis and repair will potentially get you a reputation like Toyota built up over time and increase the price you can ask for your vehicles.

Ivan maybe you could have improvised and cut a larger hole from the top to access the fuel pump :)

Привет Иван! Выбраковку насоса провожу по производительности подачи бензина за 30 секунд, в измерительную ёмкость. А дальше потребляемый ток и обороты. В своём автомобиле я пропилил аккуратное отверстие для доступа к бензонасосу.

Pretty common for poor fuel pressure on something this old n milage etc Most DIY people don’t think to measure pressure and flow! Checking fuel volume to spec us also a wise check to do

Re: idle in gear. You could check if there’s a park/neutral switch input to the ECM that’s used for idle compensation in gear. Maybe the IAC valve is worn in that one spot too.

Those Denso pumps cause problems on motorcycles, too. Looks like pretty much the same unit. Something in the armature takes a dump, you can hear them running slow.

13:44 low idle on a Toyota of that vintage? It needs the throttle body cleaned - you just forced a re-learn by leaving the battery unplugged, so I bet it's "forgotten" all the learned compensations for the throttle being dirty AF. My 2005 Camry is the same way so I clean the the throttle every 30k miles now, only takes a few minutes. Probably only really need to do it every 100k but it's easy. Still, at 176k, this Toyota DEFINITELY needs it.

They wanted make sure that the fuel tank would always have to be removed to change the fuel pump. I can see reasons why but at least they gave you an easy way to test it (the fuel pump) by giving you an access hole to the connector. That there's an access panel at all makes me think that they thought about it and it might have been deliberate.

Toyota usually does have access ports to replace the fuel pump. Those were always my favorite to replace because I didn't have to drop the tank.

On the cars, yes. On the SUVs nope. They are all like this, 96-2024 4Runners, FJs, GX and so on. So frustrating.

@@Gadget0343 I can't recall if I ever replaced one on the Toyota SUVs. Probably have, just can't remember. I always hated doing the ones on the Plymouth/Dodge Neons. The fuel pump module was located on the bottom corner of the tank. You didn't have to drop it, only lower it a little. But because it was on the bottom, you got a face full of gasoline. If it failed with a low level (which is hardly never it seems like) you could jack the vehicle up on that side so the fuel would run to the opposite side. Then it was like a puzzle trying to figure out which way to twist the assembly to extract it.

Deja Vu .. I put a new Denso pump in my ‘02 Odyssey .. yep, the RPM should be somewhere between 6000 and 7000. I tore down the old, 18 year old/180K miles pump, and found the commutator was extremely worn out.

If you don't happen to have a Pico handy you can just use Hz x 60 to find RPM......
