It's normal for the cold-started engine to not rev up when gas pedal is pushed. Likely till a certain coolant temp threshold is exceeded, then it it'll respond. The cold started engine just runs at fast idle, and all motivation is from the hybrid battery, for the first few minutes of driving. In a nutshell, it’s acting like a “range extended EV”, for a short time after cold start. If you’ve got one check for this. Took me about a decade to catch on, read about it.

Great diagnostic, Ivan! When you have weird problems on an ICE vehicle, diagnostic can be already mind boggling. With an hybrid, you add a number of unknown variables to the problem - who would guess that throttle didn't work on low EV charge? Insane. Then top it up with sloppy work from a previous shop, to add even more variables. At least, now it runs, even though the original problem still stands.

Ivan. As an old hammer and chisel kinda guy… I’ve added a new basic drill to my ‘what the heck’ moves to sort out problems. That move is voltage. I clean connections at the battery and fully charge the battery. That alone is no silver bullet… but it has fixed a reasonable amount of inexplicable issues… especially issues that come and go with heavy draw voltage requests from the battery. A lot of my stuff is commercial trucks and heavy equipment versus automotive… but it’s still electronic and it’s still weird what a fully charged battery will do to make head scratcher issues disappear Good Luck up there.. spring is coming..

Seeing that no response throttle reminded me of my Honda Legend/Acura RL. I went away for two months in the summer of 2023, so I pulled the battery leads off to prevent any discharging of the battery. I came back and reconnected the battery and started the vehicle going through the idle learn procedure etc. When I went to move the vehicle there was zero throttle response and a very hard shift into any gear with no money light either. I hooked up the Autel and it showed no codes stored, so I simply reset the system and the throttle came back and the hard shift into any gear was gone... after 40 plus years of working on vehicles I assume nothing and trust nothing, because if you do, thinking about it will do your head in.

Interesting diagnosis! A few comments: For charging the battery, either just strap it down to a wall and put it in drive on top of a brake tester (the kind used for inspections in some places, like a dyno but for brakes rather than testing engine power), or just put it in drive and tow it around the block. Just ensure that any ice/snow mode isn't enabled. Also not 100% sure but I think that the first gen Prius uses NiMh batteries, so although it's not a great idea you can charge ut using any "junk" you happen to have access to, like say a bridge rectifier and a space heater in series as a current limiter and then connect it to a 220-240V power socket (with all wires to the battery disconnected from the car, otherwise the car chassis will be a shock hazard). Doing this would be rather bad as for charging the battery fully, but charging it to 25% or 50% without any intelligent charger should be safe. Obviously never ever attempt this with lithium based batteris as you might burn down both the car and your garage. It kind of feels like there almost needs to be some sort of certificate of actually knowing what you are doing for auto repair shops. At least it's good that the owner took it somewhere to actually get the car repaired rather than give up, as leaving it with a really low charge level might had eventually ruined the battery. 200k miles (=300k km) is about or more than the expected life lengths of many cars. Although the hybrid stuff probably makes things harder on the engine, I think the head gasket problems is related to hybrids being new at the time and they missed some common use case when doing lengthy testing of the factory prototypes. Compare for example with the NSU RO 80 wankel engines in the 1970's that tanked that company due to them missing wear and tear that happened during normal use but not during their prototype testing. Also re life length on engines, I think a head gasket at 300k km is at least way better than say the 1970's/1980's Ford Pinto/Lina OHC 4-cyl engine that needs a cam shaft and new valve seats (and obviously valve lapping while at it) about every 150-200k km. (I think that most of us who have had an old car with that engine have experienced it running on three or two cylinders, with lots of blue smoke from oil leaking through worn out valve seats, but never failed in a way that wouldn't get you home. My point with the wall-of-text about 200k miles is that the owners got what they expected and probably more, and at this age the owner can just be happy that there is some life left in the car.

I think on those engines the MAF signal is used during cranking, was the vacuum leak from the disconnected hose the cause of the crank no start due to a lean mixture? I would have loved to have seen a 5 gas with lambda 15 second cranking no start graph, my suspicion would be high lambda equivalent to 15/1 AFR with no CO and no CO2 with elevated HC, instead of low lambda with equivalent 12/1 AFR necessary for a cold start. Graphing 5 gas with lambda on crank no starts is an added excellent diagnostic tool.

Nice one Ivan! But please don't motivate people to plug the passenger's seat belt latch on the driver's side to silence the stupid buzzer. If you have a crash in modern cars, airbag deployment acts differently with the seat belt on and off. If the car thinks you are strapped and you are not, it could alter airbag deployment timing/force and really hurt you! Edit: Quoted from IIHS: "For unbelted occupants, a front airbag will typically deploy when the crash is the equivalent of an impact into a rigid wall at 10-12 mph. For belted occupants, most airbags will deploy at a higher threshold - about 16 mph - because the belts alone are likely to provide adequate protection up to these moderate speeds." Also many modern cars have 2 stage charges in the airbags and may elect to blow both (higher velocity) if they think you are strapped in.

What would be the effect if you very slightly loosened the cylinder head bolts on the Prius when the engine was cooled down, with no pressure bottled up in the cooling system(and no coolant in the cylinders), then re-torqued the head bolts in the prescribed manner(i.e. followed the factory recommended tightening pattern and brought the torque values up to spec in about 3 passes). I used this method on an old 4-cylinder BMW decades ago, and was able to get 3 more months of use out of it in very hot Southern summer weather, before it needed more attention. I didn’t have the cash to pay somebody to replace the head gasket ($1,200 then), but needed the BMW for my daughter to drive for her summer job. Found another car for her to drive after the summer ended and school in a far away state started in the Fall. Sold the BMW, with full disclosure of the issue, and broke even on the BMW part of the equation.

When the fuelpump on a hybrid toyota fails, the MGs will just crank the engine at quite a high rpm, which can fool you into thinking the engine is running... Is the engine shutting off because there is coolant getting on the sparkplugs?🤔🤔
@2nickles6476 сағат бұрын
Because of the coolant in the cylinders mixed with fuel. No combustion. After the compression test, some of the coolant is blown out. Then Ivan dries out each soaked plug. Then the car finally starts. I've had to do that with some vehicles because the owner does do any maintenance because it's to expensive.😂

Longgggg time subscriber and owner of 2014 Prius and 2020 Prius prime. My next car will be another Toyota hybrid. Bulletproof so far. What is wrong with lessening our reliance on OPEC+ ?

@@thebigmacdi thank you have a point there i work for a honda dealer many times they are dead on the lot from sitting there when we jump start them they fire up with the electric egine then they start right up

Yes, Honda hybrid vehicles have a starter motor that's part of an integrated starter-alternator (ISA) system. The ISA system also includes a generator and electric motors. Explanation The starter motor in a Honda hybrid vehicle is part of the ISA system, which also includes a generator and electric motors. The ISA system supports the main engine when starting, accelerating, or increasing power. The ISA system also recovers energy during braking, which is known as regenerative braking. Honda hybrid vehicles can be jump-started like standard vehicles. How Honda hybrids work Honda hybrids have a powertrain that combines a gas engine, electric motors, and a hybrid battery. The electric motor usually provides propulsion, while the gas engine acts as a generator and starter. The system can switch between parallel and series hybrid operation.

That seems like a very poor design surely it should be built like a normal petrol car where if the computer cannot get the car to start it stops cranking the engine so you don't waste your battery or your starter

"oh but it saves so much gas money" It saves even more when it doesn't run! Ivan, it will be very interesting when you start repairing pure EVs.

So I'm thinking the knock sensor needed to be unplugged because it was picking up a vibration and retarding spark to the point the engine would not start (and engine would also respond to the accelerator pedal with a low battery) so the mechanic that unplugged the knock sensor had the right idea, but missed the vacuum line. feature or a bug?😊

6:20 Could the ECM think that the EV battery is full and not need to run the gasoline engine???? On with the video.
