What motorcycle do you think competes directly with the Ducati Multistrada V4S?

KTM's 2021 1290 Super Adventure R is the only real competitor, falling in a similar category of big adventure bikes with way too much horsepower and taller wheels. Might be better than the Mutli, but sure is uglier !

Don't think V4s has a real competitor. It is like between BMW's s1000xr and R1250 GS. You can do the things what those bikes do but you can't do with those bikes what the V4S do. It is just nearly perfect. 👌🏍

First I think the V4S is a great bike without comparison. It stands on its own podium and will push the other two to get their game on. Truthfully only the 1000xr has any chance to be upgraded to catch the New Multistrada. However from a marketing perspective I believe Ducati needs to maintain the 1260 Multistrada as well. Not just in the Adventure model but as a stand alone model. In this way Ducati retains a direct competitor with the GS on the street. Some people just want a twin and don’t want a 4 cylinder engine. I also believe that Ducati needs to build an RT competitor and the V4S provides an engine configuration that can do it. If Ducati were to build a bike with the engine rotated 90degrees in a chassis with shaft drive with a full fairing for 4 season riding. A larger touring comfort seat with larger bags and a trunk. With similar options. At that point Ducati could really challenge BMW for more market share. If your going to beat them you need a line up face to face and beat them at their game. The RT is the bench mark for touring. The GS can still be looked at as the more durable option over the plastic Ducati. The RT is more vulnerable to take down because it’s one dimensional.

Great video. Hope you had a great trip. It was classic when you were talking about the radar, paused for a second or two and then just replied........Ducati. I’ve been there many times as a long time owner of many different Ducati’s. My buddy owns a Ducati dealer and I was set for his next cast wheels, S model. I’m going to wait now for the Pikes Peak and also hope that this navigation issue is resolved. If it weren’t for the nav issues I hear so much about I would have one already. Of course my friend will still call me when this S model with cars wheels arrives and we’ll see if I actually end up letting someone else buy it. I love Ducati’s despite the, it’s always something issues. I’m excited about owning one and most assuredly will. Keep the videos coming. Oh yea, I liked the, radar doesn’t make you complacent, you make you complacent (100 percent accurate GET SOME JAR HEAD!) Simper Fi!

Great review, I live in Europe and have it on sport mode all the time. It is such great bike, truly love it. The way it corners, the balance of the bike is just incredible. The power is also great, wouldn’t say to much you just have to know how to handle it. But I do understand some people say its to much for them. The only thing that’s bothering me is we don’t have apple carplay. Great review! Keep it safe and have fun!

Excellent review - thank you. This is a possible next bike for me with my only doubts being because of fuel consumption and price.....until you mentioned pillion comfort. I haven’t found any reviews mentioning it specifically but have spoken with someone who has ridden pillion and they didn’t mention any issues with the panniers. She is a tallish person so perhaps that helps with avoiding the bags. I would be keen to hear, first hand, from anyone with pillion experience or be directed to other reviews that mention it.

I think I saw 141, it appeared it was very effortless to reach it, impressive! Like your MS V4, my MS 950s doesn't burn oil either, I changed it at 5,109 miles because it was turning dark. Great review and congrats on 10k with no issues.

I've had motorcycle oils tested on numerous occasions on air cooled only bikes and this is what I've found. It is a myth that if the oil is dark then it is no longer doing its job and must be changed. The reason the oil turns dark just means that it is doing its job at collecting the carbon deposits and suspending them in the oil to be removed at the next oil change. I've sent samples in that were completely black that had been run 2k miles over the manufacturers recommended service interval in the FL summer and it passed with flying colors. Now I'm not trying to convince anyone to not change their oil more frequently as keeping fresh oil in the engine is the best thing you can do for longevity. I'm just pointing out that just because oil is dark doesn't mean it's not still doing an effecting job. It is very likely that the oil could actually do it's job well past the interval that Ducati recommends. MoCo's tend to error on the short side if nothing than to get people in their service department more frequently.

Briliant, brilliant bike. Looks like its gonna be lots of fun riding this on ling trips. Thanks for the great review. For that 12v port upfront, I use mine for charging my phone on my Quadlock mount. There are usb plugs that fit in that 12v port that you can find on Amazon. $20-30. Cheers! The engine guards for the Ducati are made by Touratech wich are not the best. I installed the SW-Motech engine guards and they are great. So maybe in a few months they gonna come out with a version for the new v4

You can buy a mini din hella adapter for the port which has two USB ports on it. I use it to power an iPhone mounted on a quad lock mount with anti vibration and wireless charging base to the bar. It’s all very neat and takes up little room. Great addition.

You've probably discovered this by now, but about cleaning / taking off the windshield: The winglets come off just as easy. Just raise the windshield to the highest position, and then the last two screws on the winglets will be exposed. 🙂

I never got 10m on my 2014 MS. Somewhere around 6-7M I replaced both even though front was OK. It's soft rubber for great grip. I know which way I want it. Grip and rip with safety. I checked my phone compartment and mine doesn't have a weep hole like yours. I bought a small 12V adapter for my bike that I'll paint matte black. It has two 5V usb ports. I'll mount my phone on that side so very short and invisible cord behind the phone. I used the old, identical outlet in driving rain on my last MS with no issues other than my tank bag cooked my phone every time in the sun. I too am irritated over the radar delay though I would guess the US Dept. of Transportation is the prob. Still Ducati should communicate or N.American Ducati should communicate status. Keep up the good work.

Great review, Thsnks 👍. I’d say the rear tyre being when more in the centre than the edges is due to there being mostly dead straight roads where you live. The cupping as you call it on the front is perhaps due to the camber on the road wearing one side more than the other. We ride on the left here and the right side of my front tyres always wears more than the left leaving a flat ridge just off centre. 10,000 miles on the original tyres is amazing 👍

I got a flat rear on 8k miles and the tire had about 40% thread left. The Pirellis that Ducati uses on all the Multis are amazing. Well worth the price.

Worry wart. The electrical DC plugs are very common for electrical heated gear like gloves, vests and pants. Florida people are not understanding since it never blows cold. Lucky U. The rest of the world loves them. They are well placed for the cord reach. Bravo Ducati and BMW for including them.

Excellent review thank u for that I checked all your videos about this bike. What do you think about riding with passenger with all the panniers top case as well. Is it comfortable with passenger for a long run? I’m from Florida as well I live in Sunny Isles. So I can’t decide between this or the bmw 1250 gs.

I had one passenger say that it was more comfortable without the panniers and another said there was no difference. I ride mostly solo and don't enjoy having a passenger on this bike. I don't mind a passenger on a cruiser but with a taller bike like this, you need a good passenger that won't flail around at stops. The electronic suspension settings is fantastic, however when you add a passenger so that by itself is a major plus for the Multistrada.

My salesman said he was knocking off about 700 bucks from full price for me but neither they nor I were aware of the radar not being turned on until the day I picked up the bike. I could fit a full face helmet in the left side but not the right.

Great informative video!! Have you had any electronic gremlins pop up? I've owned 2 Ducati's in the past. A 2015 Monster 821 and a 2019 Hypermotard base. Both fun bikes but both of them would just shut off every now and then, usually when coming to a stop. The Hyper was worse. I thought they might have fixed that since my 2015 but the same problem it just happened more often. A few times while riding at speed! Dealer never could figure it out on either.. This new V4 seems to be much better, I'm planning to buy this or a new BMW 1250 GSA in a couple of months. Again great video.

9:21 I just bought this bike. I hold my thumb in the middle of those two top hat switches. That allows you to keep track of which is which w/out fuss. And yea it takes some getting use to.

The only use I can think for the 12V socket is for a battery trickle charger. Not much use for you in Florida, but for those of us who don't ride in the winter, it's useful to trickle charge the battery to save it going flat.

I think it is switched - so no go. An SAE from the terminals is safest. Lots of things you can plug into the 12v. Usually with canbus, they are limited to 5 amps.

Okay, so I'm not the only one...the OEM front tire on my Multi 950 wore the same as you are describing, certainly not how I expected. I got about 14,000 out of it before switching to the Continental TKC 70s front and rear. The TKCs have an 80/20 road to trail bias...I do like to go explore trails occasionally when I find one. I've got about 2,500 miles on them so far and have been super happy.

@@RemboUSMC The reason I ask is I have ridden the V4s and the Pikes peak. I have a StreetFighter V4 On the road (bigger difference on track) I feel the pikes peak is 90% as sporty as my SF. I feel surprisingly the Multi V4s is about 80% for sports riding on road compared to my SF. I’m just wondering if that 10% delta between the PP and V4 Rally in the scenario I’m talking about. Is worth not having the 30 litre tank. Extra travel suspension with plusher ride. Extra comfort of the reworked aero and the longer lasting tyres? These are thing I can’t pick up on a 1 hour test ride. If the Rally is just a more refined version of the V4s with a 30 litre tank and you had the choice. Pikes peak or V4 Rally. Would it be a hard decision or straight out Pikes peak?

My 2014 Multi GT loaded for touring with bags and trunk full always gave me 42 mpg. More without the bags. My 2009 RT was always above 47 mpg. Both bikes had less horsepower than the V4s.

I just recently traded my Pen V4S for this Mul V4S, with all my buddies having adventure bikes now i had to follow suit. I thought about putting nobbies on my Panigale but...thats just dumb so after riding the GS, Tiger, Tenre700, Africa Twin, PanAm...this was my bag. Sure i came from another Ducati, and im sure hit helped but the bike brand aside was MY kind of bike for this class. Having said that its almost like my Panigale in its dumbest mode, and being a good rider that i am i can toast actual sports bikes w/ it. Hooning is easy. If thats your thing.

Mostly in Touring 90% of the time. Rarely if ever in Urban. Sport 5-8% of the time. No breakdown between modes though.

Hey Rembo. I took the V4S out for a 20 mile demo yesterday and I really love that bike. The fuel mileage is definitely down from my older 2013 Multi. Does the fuel consumption bug you a lot? The most that I saw was maybe 45 mpg. I road it on a 58 degree day so there was no way to really check for engine heat in heavy traffic. I saw another reviewer's video saying that there was a lot of heat dumping on his left leg. Did you notice the heat while in heavy traffic? Is it more than the older Multi-s? Thanks

Your right wrist determines your fuel mileage and I have a few videos where I break down the MPG in detail. It does not bother me because I don't like to drive more than 3 hours at a time without stopping, even in a car. Concerning the heat on the left leg, that is total and complete BS. Each time my leg starts getting hot it is because of the sun beating down on it. There are not heat issues on the leg. Maybe the person was wearing shorts and sitting on the bike while it was just idling without moving. I do not buy the heat on any leg issue.

BMW motorcycles have as used those 12 volt outlets forever. Power let used to make kits for other bikes and I have several on my Kawasaki and Honda. Cables are made for a lot of items that don’t need an adapter. The outlets are more weather resistant than the cigarette lighter plug. Obviously, you have gotten by without them.

Yes TWW in Pompano. I never considered Ducati at all before this bike. It was the 37,000mi major servicing that peaked my interest at first.

I have had 3 Ducati's, including the 1100s air cooled Multi. Loved them and will be in the market for a new bike this year. I have narrowed it down to 2 choices, the Multi 950s or the V4s Multi. I am over 60, not going to be in the dirt, but will be up in the mountains on tracks and on the beach. Is the V4s that much better than the 950s?

They are very different and the V4S is extremely smooth. Many people ended up still working the 950 because that’s what they were used to.

If you don’t need 170hp then go for the 950s. 113hp is plenty for everyone and way cheaper. Much more cheaper.

I would switch tho the Angel GTs or the Pilot road 5s. I prefer the Pilot road 5s for their rain service. They are very awesome in the rain over the Angle GTs.

Most riders are intimidated by the throttle on the Multistradas. Because of the 1/4 turn throttle used like on the race bikes. Great for racing or wheelies but for the ham fisted general rider it’s hard to manage especially in town. They really need to increase the rotation of the throttle to ease the power delivery. I had the same comment on my older Multi.

I believe urban mode and touring mode take care of the throttle issue. Only in Sport do I really notice a difference.

The Ducati MSV4 family is a little wide for lane splitting although not as bad as a bagger and gas mileage is not of the commuter level. I think it would be a great choice, however. Riding 2-up for a commute every day for an hour would work great on this bike. There is plenty of power for two up. I have a lot of videos on this bike if you go through my channel so there is a lot of information for you.

Speaking of riding modes - have you tried changing modes while cruise control is engaged? My 2015 DVT model let's me do that so I'm curious if that's carried over to your model.

I did not try that because whenever I change riding modes, you have to let off the throttle.

I only have a mere 1000 miles on mine, but it goes like : Ducati Connect and Sygic: crap, but nobody should buy a bike for infotainment. Riding modes: Although they work realy well, I barely use the granularity and flexibility they offer. I mostly go between Touring and Sport, and leave it there. Suspension: Works as advertised, but I leave it in auto. On paper, the bike has a lot of tech, and it delivers. But as I always end-up using the same mode, I'm actually wondering if that fat layer of electronic is really needed. Which bring me to my first biggest issue. I didn't opt for the extended warranty, and I'm already thinking of selling the bike as soon as my 2 years warranty expires. Im legit afraid of the bills that would come with a dash or fork job... My second, and probably biggest issue, is the lack of drama delivered from the bike. I'm coming from air-cooled Ducati and old gen Testastretta engine, and I didnt need to read the speedo to know I was going fast. Meanwhile, this V4 engine will go way above 120mph without its rider noticing at all. I'm not sure yet how I feel about that or if it's what I'm looking for considering my bikes are mainly used as toys.

Do you go over the recommended tire pressure? I use Angel GTs, and it I run them even 2-3 psi over 33, I start getting some cupping. Congrats on 10 grand, and happy birthday!

The front tire gets run at exactly 35 psi and the rear tire, I adjust from between 37 and 40 depending upon how much weight I am caring and if I have a pillion.

@@RemboUSMC Next set of tires try running a couple of PSI higher in the front. I've done this on almost all of my bikes and it greatly reduced the cupping depending on the tire. I'm keeping a consistent 38psi cold in the front for this tire so we will see how much it cups. You will never get rid of the cupping completely if you ride remotely aggressive while cornering. Tire pressure and riding style are the biggest reason for how much cupping you get. FYI... in regards for the radar. I know there was at least 1 motorcycle that had the radar activated on 2July. I believe there have been a few more in my area that now have it as well. My understanding is that if the bike has had the radar calibrated properly from the factory all that needs to be done is basically turning it on with the computer and verifying that it is in spec. If the bikes radar is not in spec then the tech with need to use a special jig to calibrate the radar and get it into spec. The later is much more involved but not too bad.

Removing the winglets would allow a small increase in air into the pocket behind the windscreen. That will also reduce the vacuum behind the windshield which also reduces turbulence. It should quiet the ride and reduce updraft from engine area. Winglets are also used on the 1200RT fairing and have increased the size of the air pocket for the rider. This helps in the cold but it also makes the RT too hot in the summer for most riders who gear up for riding. Without the winglets the RT is Mach better in the summer plus it reduces the rider pocket vacuum and pressure on the riders back when riding at constant highway speeds.

Mine was also activated on Friday. Works as advertised and are both great features. The blind spot sensor was a game changer on cars and I expect it will also be the same in bikes. Needs to be on ALL motorcycles.

I disagree with your engine guard opinion. The Ducati units cover more bike and engine than the aftermarket guards. The welds are large but not spattered or missing good bead.

The first set I looked at, the welds from Ducati were horrible. I weld and I am not a good welder and I could have done better. I recently looked at another set and they were better. For the money I expect better quality.

Great review. What's your feeling on the engine heat, especially now in the hot season in Florida? I'm just reaching 1,000 miles with mine, and I think it is a great bike, but I'm already considering not keeping it because the engine heating is so uncomfortable. When I ride in the traffic below 50mph for a few minutes in hot weather (80s°F), I feel like my feets and legs are roasting in a way I've never experienced on other bikes in the same category. I tried once wearing sneakers instead of boots and my ankle got burnt just by the hot air flow! I think Ducati is aware of this as they added those inelegant plastic wings to improve the air flow around the engine, but I don't think this is making the job at low speed. Or maybe the air flow is reduced by the ducati engine guards (which, indeed, are expensive). Besides that, this is the perfect bike for my use, but the thermal discomfort is about to be a show stopper for me.

I have a 950 Multi and have no problem with the heat. Wear proper pants and shoes/boot and you will be fine. If you ride with shorts you will feel that engine heat on many bikes. In the hot weather yes, you can feel it more, but it’s nothing that will hurt you. I have 10k on mine and I always wear art least jeans and shoes above the ankle and never have any discomfort from the engine heat. If you decide to sell it let me know ;). Cheers and ride safe.

In love w mine. I use the Urban mode a lot around town because it seems to give me much better gas mileage - although I haven’t quantified that to any level remotely like you have. That said, based on screen readings showing “current consumption” I’d estimate I get about 8-10mpg more when in Urban mode. Of course, the instant I’m out of town (or getting bored) I flip into Sport or Touring. I traded up from an MS 950 that I put about 40k miles on - which I would describe as feeling more “visceral”; probably due to the V2’s character. I find on the V4s, so far everything I throw at it when I’m pushing around for the limits, I would describe the bike’s feedback as, “Ok (yawn), that was easy, what else ya got?” :)

I find on mine that it does get better mileage in Urban mode and I still run it on the highway. Still has plenty of power for normal riding. Throttle response is just a little softer and the top end speed, so I've been told, is only around 128mph or so. If I'm on a long trip where I might have a long stretch to the next gas station I will certainly put it in Urban mode. Works just fine.

I called dealers all over the US and have different responses. Some have already turned on the radar for their customers, some don't have all of the equipment needed (that I don't believe) and some say they can't yet because they have to get packages with the update paperwork sent from Italy with a number that allows them to turn it on. I don';t know what to believe. You would think we could get a straight answer from Ducati North America...

Rembo did you have any brake problems excluding pad replacement? I have a '21 with NO back brakes even though they have been flushed and it only has 3400 miles on it. Oh the rear pedal is firm and solid just no stopping power, thanks for any info..

No Sir. No brake issues. I do know someone who had a problem with the master cylinder for the front brakes and got that replaced.
