One of the first places we looked was Novelda. A flat in one of the main squares in fact it was up above the wee ice cream shop in your video. . But we ended up in Torrevieja. We plan a visit back there to see the church.

Novelda is 20 mins from us, it`s a great town has everything you need. A lot of the white marble that they process comes from the quarry where we are.

Well, technically, the invaders were the Muslims, who crossed the Strait of Gibraltar in 711 AD, expelled the Visigoth Christian barbarians and took over the Iberian Peninsula. 11 years later, in 722, in the mountains of northern Spain, in the Covadonga gorge, some mountaineers led by the leader Pelayo, destroyed a Muslim expedition and began the Reconquista, in which the Christians advanced towards the south, liberating territories. This period lasted 800 years, (722-1492 ), and ended with the taking of Granada by the Catholic Monarchs, expelling the last Muslim king of Spain, Boabdil. The Christians, when they occupied a territory expelling the Muslims, used to build a strategic castle, called Castillo de Frontera ( border castle), which served to monitor and consolidate the liberated territory. Spain has hundreds of castles of this type, as the reconquest progressed from the north to the south, century by century.

I’ve not been to Novelda, but I have seen their football team play Torrevieja, there was a mass brawl after a Novelda player booted a Torrevieja player who had just scored. Great stuff!

That chruch is utterly extraordinary. It looks like something designed by Antoni Gaudi. The exterior would not look out of place on the set of Star Wars. What a brilliant, ispirational discovery. I am determined to visit. Thanks again :-)

If that church was in the UK the local council would demolish it. That,s the difference between them and us, they preserve their heritage. There would be a tesco store there now.

So very true. An old building in our old town back home got knocked down because the owner set it on fire as was having trouble selling it for the money he wanted. Exterior was fine. Its was over 100 year old building. He got it knocked down day after the fire and before the council could stop him. 😡🤬

Novelda, like many of the villages/small towns within an hour or so's drive from the coastal areas are very picturesque plus are close to the 'Real Spain' than much of the coast, and some vey good bargains can be had. My wife and l visited the church about twenty years ago. While we were there a wedding party arrived so we were treated by all dressed in their finery. some very elegantly dressed ladies. l believe the church's design was inspired by Gaudi, hence the similarity to the cathedral at Barcelona... l lived in a small village further inland in Castilla la Mancha, most if no all have a strong Moorish (Islamic) influence that is still apparent today.

There are thousands in Spain, land with them or land for 3,500 near me. Trouble with Brits they are only in Spain for the 3 S's, Sun Sea and Sangria and all like to congregate in nests on the Costas so pay more.
