I don't think you accounted for the fantasy that Retribution Paladin fulfills either. That Holy Knight, the Templar. that Judge, Jury and Executioner powered by the Holy Light. In WoW, there are many great warriors, no more so popular, loved, and goated as Varian Wrynn. Even Horde players respect that Wrynn. But it has been Paladins, since their creation back in the 2nd war to counter the Death Knights created by Guldan., that were there taking names and kicking ass. When they were not on the frontlines they were advising kings, and princes. Warriors have been the chads that have protected the Alliance men an woman for the longest time, but when the fel fire comes, or the undead. it is righteous fire, and holy light that takes to field first. As seen in Wrath, and Legion, it was Paladins that stormed the barricades, and set up footholds so that armies of Azeroth could have foot holds in those campaigns, and it has been Paladins over the years, with the exception of a very few, that have sacrifice much to protect the common people and infantry alike from dangers and darkness that would steal not just the breath from your lungs, but the warmth from your very soul.

Vanilla Ret here (yeah) It feels weird sometimes. I went holy back then because i wanted to raid and i wanted to be taken seriously by other players (people use to: LOLRET you all day, every day). I used to get all the gear that nobody wanted at the end of the big patches and build my Ret when everybody else was done with dps pieces. Used to join dungeon groups and battlegrounds. So good. Now days, sometimes nostalgia hits. I start the game, log in and see my paladin standing right there at the top of all my characters and i think while staring at him: WE DID IT MAN, WE DID IT. For some people this wont make sense but my paladin is really special for me. Playing him helped me thought hard times. I love this game man even tho it SUCKS trying to find a raid spot these days (All my friends left the game for good) and you see Rets coming from everywhere lol. Thanks for the video. Loved it.

I keep trying other classes, every time after a few hours I just keep thinking "this would be so much easier on my ret" or "I never would have died to that on my ret". It has VERY strong burst healing, an immunity, good ability to hit outside the melee circle.

I'm a long time ranged player, only occasionally messing with melee. I've recently leveled a DK and a pally, and I'm finding I like the pally more. I love the thematics of a DK (my main is a lock) but the group utility and self healing ret provides is making me like it so much more, not to mention I like having a 1hand and shield for tanking, and the ability to heal if needed. The only thing I would like to see changed so far with class design is no cd on crusader strike, I think every class should have a good filler, the other thing is just personal preference, I'd prefer more swords or something as an alternative to the hammers.

They really need to work harder at bringing other specs up to par with specs like ret pal and fire mage, not just damage wise but utility and defensiveness too. The difference between those and something like arms war in keys is nothing short of demoralising lol. Doing a couple of once-off reworks per expansion isn't enough. They even reworked rogue and dh this season and mage is probably still a better pick than both of them in keys right now. And If they aren't going to try balance them, then make it easier to swap classes later on in the season - e.g. accelerated crest acquisition.

It's frustrating because my Ret pally alt is out-DPSing my Rogue, with a 25 ilvl deficit, by mostly alternating two buttons and popping all DPS CDs as they come up (since they all have the exact same cooldown). It's pretty stupid that I can just mash 2-3 buttons and be competitive with other classes that are way above my weight class.

Played Healpala in Cataclysm, came back to Legion and loved to be a Ret main, BfA was just not fun somehow and then i just didn't want to start playing again without friends. I've mained Ret since I started playing this game in 2009. A paladin was my first character and once I figured out how to play I specced into Ret. One of the things I have always liked about it and one of the reasons why I think it's popular is not just because of how it's currently performing in raids or dungeons, it's how great it is for solo world play. Only tanks have better survivability solo but their damage playstyle is a lot more boring than ret. Ret feels like you are really nuking something down fast while not feeling like you are in danger of dying. The world quests in the elite area's like Brackenhide are easily taken down by ret in large chain pulls. Obviously gear helps this late in an expansion but it makes it really fun to play. It's one of the things I really liked back in WoTLK. The power level I felt with Shadows Edge and full 25 man tier gear was amazing. We are once again feeling that powerful.

Ret is no doubt slapping right now, and is in a great place balancing wise right now which is awesome! There are still some HUGE glaring holes with ret though, mainly in the talent tree and their spenders. Other specs like havoc don’t have to pick what to spend their resource on, aoe or single target. Ret has to pick whether to press final verdict or divine storm which is a huge flaw for the spec compared to other specs that don’t have to pick between single target or aoe spenders. Another big issue is the ret talent tree and the huge loss ret suffers when they take more aoe or more single target. In the mythic plus spec your single target is really bad compared to other specs. And in the raid build, rets aoe is heavily crippled in comparison to other specs that don’t have to make so many build defining choices in their talent tree. If blizz can address these issues, ret would be a solid spec for a long time going forward. With all this said though, I’m happy ret is doing so well when it’s been left in the garbage for multiple expansions.

They are not issues. Quite the opposite, they are designs to balance the spec and the class overall. What you’re calling an issue is just skill check and it’s not because you can’t choose what is a priority in a situation that it is a problem. The priority system is what makes a difference between players. Exemple : me being 465 in heroic raid out dmging every other ret that’s over 10 ilvl above me. So, your idea to make a bot able to do the perfect rotation is a glaring issue.

Not what I’m suggesting at all and you missed my whole point. I’m gonna keep using havoc as my main example cause that spec as currently constructed is probably one of the most fun and fluid specs to play right now. Havoc builds its resource fury through auto attacks and felblade mainly, and have a choice to dump it on chaos strike (single target), or blade dance (aoe BUT procs a very high damaging single target effect and dot) that is a cooldown aoe ability. It is very laid out and plain for what havoc does, press blade dance on cd to proc a throw glaive in single target and aoe for the highest damage per resource spent. What I was suggesting the devs do is to may add some flavor talents to enhance divine storm, maybe give it a CD and make it hit harder, add talents that make it proc other effects, etc. Ret being tunneled into the mind set of oh well there’s 2-3 targets so me hitting my single target spender is still more damage than hitting my aoe spender in some situations which is pretty silly imo. Maybe make divine storm a builder again and add a cleave aspect in the talent tree to final verdict idk, but having to choose between a single target spender and a aoe spender is very flawed in current day WoW when most other melee specs don’t have to choose.

Since divine storm having to be chosen over single target dmg is a way of balancing paladin dmg and make it challenging at high level, I don’t think they would or want to make it like other classes where you can do both aoe and single target dmg at the same time without having to choose over one or the other. Ret and paladin in general is not a rotation system but a priority system, since you pretty much have all your spells off cd instantly you have to choose which one is better in what situation. Judgement better at 40yard only and to generate more HP, blade of justice hits hardest none holy spender. hammer of wrath gotta be used on targets under 20% only or filler rarely.
