In my Spanish class, there was a girl who'd spent a year in Costa Rica, and she had a really hard time on our class trip to Spain. The teachers were constantly correcting her, on the little things she said, but the main one I remember is when we were discussing Spanish small talk before the trip. We had to take the bus to school in Valencia, and in Spain, the proper way to say "take the bus" is "coger el autobus". She started laughing hysterically at this, as "coger," which simply means "to take" or "to grab" in Spain, means "to sleep with" in Costa Rica. So yeah, apparently we were all sleeping with the bus in Valencia...

In the Canary Islands (Spain), when you take the bus you say "coger la guagua". So as you say in South America "coger" means "sleep with" and specially in Chile, "guagua" is a baby SO YOU CAN TELL HOW BAD IS IT hahahahha

I speak with people from Costa Rica every day. We talk about Ticoisms. However, you are allowed to used coger to pick up something like a suitcase. Yes, they know both meanings. Get your mind out of the gutter. We've all made the concha mistake. I'm still trying to find a good way to speak about seashells.

In Peru we use more "agarrar" verb than "coger" to mean grab. Anyway, if you use the verb with people normally has some kind of sexual connotations: Te lo/la agarraste? -- Do you kiss him/her? (wild kiss) Te lo/la cogiste? --- Do you fuck him/her?

I'm from Chile and one of my fav memories when we first got here is one time my mom was conversing with a Puerto Rican neighbor and kept saying that 'bichos' were the one thing she hated from Miami. She kept saying how every time a bicho would pop up she'd scream and how she hates when bichos would get in her face or crawl all over her. The lady was turning colours because she was super religious/conservative and in PR bicho means penis. xDD It also took some time to get used to the word pico here in Miami because Cubans use it a lot in situations like 'son las 2 y pico' when to me it just sounds like they're saying penis.

Finnish, a language spoken by only about 5.4 million speakers (mainly in Finland, but also i Sweden) has a sentence (kuusi palaa) that can mean about 10 different things. Also if I'm not mistaken, reindeer is said "poro" wich in spanish could sound like how an english would pronounce "porro" (joint in spanish). Also Katso puuta ("look at the trees" I believe) sounds like "what a whore" (cacho puta) and, my favourite, "Hoputta" wich I believe it means "hurry up" sounds just like "joputa" a short way to say "hijo de puta" wich means "son of a whore".

I had a project involving people from the SW USA, Spain, Argentina, Mexico, Colombia and Brazil. And we had to talk about the computer program grabbing data from one place and moving it to another. Coger, well, that's the normal word in Spain but... nnnno. It quickly got discarded. Tomar, ah, that's what the Colombians proposed, but to the Mexicans it means to drink to the Spaniards it means to drink or to eat. You're not supposed to ingest your data! Can you imagine the indigestion? Agarrar. I don't even remember which ones banned this one, it got banned so fast. We finally settled on jalar, but as a guy from Argentina said "and I'm sure it's dirty somewhere, we just don't have anybody from wherever it's dirty!"

So if you're barefoot and you want your sandals but are far away and the person who's next to them is a girl, well, you can't say "pásame las cholas" (pass me the sandals) 'cause she will slap in your face really, really hard... This isn't in Spanish, it's in my mother tongue pushto (kpk) The curious case of the word: Píshè which can mean three things. A small wood eating maggot, a small beetle or a penis. So by saying "Píshè prì kā" it can mean to spray pesticide on the maggots, burn the bugs or emasculate someone. The best part is that there is literally no way to put that into context as it can only ever be used in a standalone manner. God help the poor guy who says that to his friend.

This also happens in English. "Spunk" in American means "moxie" or "attitude", whereas in Britain it means "semen". Fanny is a butt in American, but it's a vagina in British. "Pissed" mean angry in American, but it means drunk in British. Three years ago, I was part of an animation program for animators from the Andean countries (Perú, Venezuela, Ecuador, Colombia, and Bolivia). So, we were 15 people living in a house in Denmark and everyone has their own words that sounded weird to others, but the one I remember the most was "cachas". So, in Ecuador they say "cachas" to ask if you understood what they say. It is something like: "Got it?" But in Peru (where I'm from), "cachar" means to have sex. So every time one Ecuadorian asked "cachas?", for us was like: "are you f*cking?" haha It was really weird. Also, I remember one of my Venezuelan friends said: "Estoy arrecha" as Joanna said in the video, and I was like WHAT? because in Peru, that word also means horny haha Another weird word is popcorn. Everyone call it differently. In Peru is canchita, in Chile is cabrita, in Ecuador is canguil, in Bolivia is pipoca, in Colombia is crispetas, in Venezuela is cotufas... And the list goes on...

Pero arrecha en Colombia significa las dos cosas, enojada y exitada (sexualmente). Popote la verdad no tiene significado aquí, y también se le dice pitillo. Cuca en Colombia son tres cosas: Vagina, bueno (parecido al significado en México) y también es el nombre de una galleta. Y solamente en el país: En Medellín chucha es una zarigüeya, mientras que en la costa es vagina.

I learned that the hard way. A few months ago, I was playing Bingo with a bunch of elderly people, all native Spanish speakers from other countries. When I was close to winning, someone actually scored. I slammed my hand on the table, scaring the people around me. I tried to be slick by saying in Spanish, "Sorry, that was a bug." or "Disculpa, se fue un bicho." One woman there just exploded because of what I said. Turns out she was from Puerto Rico and, unfamiliar with Cuban Spanish (of which I'm of Cuban descent) "bicho" is not vulgar as it just means "bug". So yeah... that was awkward. *^^*

Not a curse word, and not Spanish, but Portuguese, so it's close. "Propina" in Spanish is tip (to give a tip to the waiter) or the check in a restaurant or the fare in a taxi, but in Portuguese is a bribe. So when I went to Argentina and the taxi driver asked for a propina, we were scared for a split second, before remembering what it was.
