In my Spanish class, there was a girl who'd spent a year in Costa Rica, and she had a really hard time on our class trip to Spain. The teachers were constantly correcting her, on the little things she said, but the main one I remember is when we were discussing Spanish small talk before the trip. We had to take the bus to school in Valencia, and in Spain, the proper way to say "take the bus" is "coger el autobus". She started laughing hysterically at this, as "coger," which simply means "to take" or "to grab" in Spain, means "to sleep with" in Costa Rica. So yeah, apparently we were all sleeping with the bus in Valencia...

She kept saying how every time a bicho would pop up she'd scream and how she hates when bichos would get in her face or crawl all over her. The lady was turning colours because she was super religious/conservative and in PR bicho means penis. xDD It also took some time to get used to the word pico here in Miami because Cubans use it a lot in situations like 'son las 2 y pico' when to me it just sounds like they're saying penis.

I had a project involving people from the SW USA, Spain, Argentina, Mexico, Colombia and Brazil. And we had to talk about the computer program grabbing data from one place and moving it to another. Coger, well, that's the normal word in Spain but... nnnno. It quickly got discarded. Tomar, ah, that's what the Colombians proposed, but to the Mexicans it means to drink to the Spaniards it means to drink or to eat. You're not supposed to ingest your data! Can you imagine the indigestion? Agarrar. I don't even remember which ones banned this one, it got banned so fast. We finally settled on jalar, but as a guy from Argentina said "and I'm sure it's dirty somewhere, we just don't have anybody from wherever it's dirty!"

I'm from Venezuela, and I live in an area where the word for "sandal" it's actually "chola", and in Maracaibo (Venezuela), you can't say "chola" because it means "testicles"... So if you're barefoot and you want your sandals but are far away and the person who's next to them is a girl, well, you can't say "pásame las cholas" (pass me the sandals) 'cause she will slap in your face really, really hard... For real, it hurts D: . . . . . . P.S.:Not happen to me, but a friend xD

This isn't in Spanish, it's in my mother tongue pushto (kpk) The curious case of the word: Píshè which can mean three things. A small wood eating maggot, a small beetle or a penis. So by saying "Píshè prì kā" it can mean to spray pesticide on the maggots, burn the bugs or emasculate someone. The best part is that there is literally no way to put that into context as it can only ever be used in a standalone manner. God help the poor guy who says that to his friend.

Three years ago, I was part of an animation program for animators from the Andean countries (Perú, Venezuela, Ecuador, Colombia, and Bolivia). So, we were 15 people living in a house in Denmark and everyone has their own words that sounded weird to others, but the one I remember the most was "cachas". So, in Ecuador they say "cachas" to ask if you understood what they say. It is something like: "Got it?" But in Peru (where I'm from), "cachar" means to have sex. So every time one Ecuadorian asked "cachas?", for us was like: "are you f*cking?" haha It was really weird. Also, I remember one of my Venezuelan friends said: "Estoy arrecha" as Joanna said in the video, and I was like WHAT? because in Peru, that word also means horny haha Another weird word is popcorn. Everyone call it differently. In Peru is canchita, in Chile is cabrita, in Ecuador is canguil, in Bolivia is pipoca, in Colombia is crispetas, in Venezuela is cotufas... And the list goes on...

I learned that the hard way. A few months ago, I was playing Bingo with a bunch of elderly people, all native Spanish speakers from other countries. When I was close to winning, someone actually scored. I slammed my hand on the table, scaring the people around me. I tried to be slick by saying in Spanish, "Sorry, that was a bug." or "Disculpa, se fue un bicho." One woman there just exploded because of what I said. Turns out she was from Puerto Rico and, unfamiliar with Cuban Spanish (of which I'm of Cuban descent) "bicho" is not vulgar as it just means "bug". So yeah... that was awkward. *^^*

Jajaja me recordó una maestra que tenía en Florida que era mexicana. Que nos hizo leer un libro de Bichos. Y ella decía cosas como.... los bichos más grandes, peludos, coloridos etc... casi al final nos preguntó que nos daba risa y simple mente dijimos que éramos de PR y se disculpó.

Not a curse word, and not Spanish, but Portuguese, so it's close. "Propina" in Spanish is tip (to give a tip to the waiter) or the check in a restaurant or the fare in a taxi, but in Portuguese is a bribe. So when I went to Argentina and the taxi driver asked for a propina, we were scared for a split second, before remembering what it was.
