The "up side down" trick really works. I remember once in high school art class we had to copy a Picasso line drawing. Every ones drawing was different with different proportion and perspective, mostly not even resembling the original. She then had us turn our reference picture up side down and redraw it. Every ones drawing looked the same and they all looked like the original. Her lesson was draw what you actually see and not what you preconceived or think you see. It worked.

About the acrylic paint being darker after it dries, mine is actually lighter when it dries so I have mix a little darker than the reference picture.
