Wow, straight out of the gate Ben is wrong, LOL. The Platoon sent to LV426 was green?! GREEN! They were perhaps the most experienced, battle hardened warriors in the USCM. That's why any of them at all survived the ambush at the atmosphere processing plant in the first place. Their Lieutenant was as green as a Leprechaun, but not the Platoon, it had the best NCO's around as well as tough PFC's.
@deusexmachina9322
@deusexmachina9322 5 жыл бұрын
Dunno if I'd go that far. They certainly seemed to be experienced, but they also struck me as a bit lacking in some ways. Like, they were prone to firing from the hip when overwhelmed, while I'd expect a more highly proficient infantryman to be solidly shouldering the weapon and switching from target to target, nailing that center mass. Sight, squeeze, change target, repeat. How they performed given their situation was impressive, but the actual nuts and bolts of things like that were off. Gorman was green as fuck, though, yeah, and what made matters worse is that he undercut the platoon sergeant a lot. And Apone, for his part, didn't seem to be a strong enough PS to be able to give the PL the very necessary "friendly suggestions"; PSs are often called Platoon Daddies for good reason since they have to act like it with both the subordinates and the PL. He seemed competent as a grunt, alright enough as a leader in the fight considering how bad the clusterfuck was, but him not squaring the PL away was an issue.
@ukmediawarrior
@ukmediawarrior 5 жыл бұрын
@@deusexmachina9322 Maybe Apone didn't have the time to deal with Gorman as he would his usual LT. The man was dumped on him and his people it seems. If I am remembering the movie right (and I haven't watched it in a while) at the start when they are first checking out the empty base they do have their rifles at the proper ready positions, it's only when the alien ambush goes down that they seem to lose it and start shooting from the hip just to get rounds down range at the bugs. Hicks is even shown tutoring Ripley in the use of the rifle and telling her to hold it into her shoulder so they do know the proper shooting position.
@Riceball01
@Riceball01 5 жыл бұрын
@@deusexmachina9322 Agreed about Apone. When Gorman started to try to tell him what to do when the first ran into the aliens, Apone should have just ignored Gorman and did what he thought needed doing. Because clearly Gorman didn't know enough that he should tell Apone what to do but let him decide how best to do it.

You know, as a fan of the Battletech franchise I wish they would talk about the Clan Elemental in this series but aside from limited depictions in computer games (that do not really do justice to the true capabilities of a Clan Elemental) and a 1990s cartoon of... "dubious" quality, there really is not that much media for this channel to work with. The major problem, though, is that being from the Battletech franchise Clan Elementals never fight alien civilizations or the like because one of the defining features of that franchise is the complete lack of alien civilizations, something done deliberately by FASA back in the day to separate their game from its contemporaries (first one to mention the novel "Far Country" gets the Smoke Jaguar Turtle Bay treatment). As such, Clan Elementals only ever fight other humans so they do not fit into this series's "Humanity first" theme. When they are finished with this series, I hope they consider giving the Battletech franchise's lore and tech a look and make some videos for it. I get the feeling they would like it, especially since there are no filthy aliens running around causing trouble.

What do you mean "with the difference of an under-barrel grenade launcher?" US Marines carry a variety of weapons platforms, however the two makes and models that seem most common are variations of the Colt M16/M4 and the FN Herstal SCAR platform (both Light and Heavy models, depending on the intended engagement circumstances and the assigned duty and role of the user ). At any rate, all the variations of these weapons platforms have the capability to accept a forward mounted grenade launcher, in most cases either a 30mm or 40mm. To integrate the launcher into the weapon itself is just silly and impractical. In most cases it's simply unnecessary and cumbersome to begin with, not to mention a substantial amount of extra weight to lug around, even if dry. However there have been a number of attempts over the years to produce a multi-purpose, fully integrated platform. Some are pretty cool I'll admit, but wholly unnecessary as a standard issue weapon. A few have been pitched to the military over the years, and one of the their biggest gripes with these deals is "make the damn launcher optional".

Why did Weyland-Yutani even want to use Xenomorphs as biological weapons? It’s not like they can domesticate a hive minded Keter Class Alien race single handily bent on capturing an impregnating every single potential host. And if they did somehow bring them to planet earth what’s the stop them from escaping and causing an end of the world scenario. Because in the comics that’s exactly what happened they thought to use them as biological weapons and ended up destroying the earth.

I don't see why you counted the Smart Gun as a disadvantage. It's basically a mobile machine-gun nest with an aim bot for a 90 degree cone in front of your soldier. Normally I would agree that it's too heavy for a soldier to reliably carry and fire it, but because it's anchored to your center of gravity it is notably easier to carry and fire than a weapon it's size would otherwise be.

Ben is very wrong about the unit being green. This is supported by the fact that Hudson is nearly done with enlistment. Gorman is green as hell and it shows with the fact that when they discover where the colonist are located he does not take anytime to assess where they are going. Apone comes closers to about years old and a career marine. There training shows in the way they cleared the rooms in the building and after there encounter with the aliens. There lack of discipline is more or a result of Lt Gorman and Sgt Apone. Particularly Apone after years of do nothing missions and easy combat assignments where someone might get hurt. Hicks preparation of the defense was good but he lacked the experience to think in a 3d plane.

That they also preform the duties of a normal ground army too is just because they were both. Think about them in modern US terms, marines fight on the sea, in the air, and on the ground. Clone troops do all of those, and space too. Were as when compared to the Empire itself, the storm troopers lose alot of this. They seem to lack a proper definition. They no longer have pilots (now all navy), and don't fight the major ground campaigns (now army), they seem to be mostly ship & planetary security forces, who get used as an assault force when the army isn't available.

ive listened to a lot of aliens lore, and the whole mythos suffers from the lack of actual depth. its always the same corporate/military idiots doing something idiotic. for those who only know of tehy films, the comic plotline eventually leads to the whole of earth being taken over by the xenomorphs.

Not really, your forgetting Cults, various different corporations, or they flat out are fighting aliens because they are in human territory, and it had nothing to do with humans.

You forgot the remote sentry guns as used at choke points outside of the operations center. Those alone repelled the first wave of Xeno's when setup.

at about 4:25 : I've always been curious about the FTL system of the "Aliens" universe. It seems to make sense they would have some form of FTL, otherwise we are talking about up to decades or MUCH longer to get to the nearest stars. But if they have FTL, then why the 'cryo sleep' pods aboard ships? Is there something inherently dangerous about being awake and aware during FTL travel that makes this necessary? Time at long last to find a wiki on the subject, I guess ^_^
@officerlatrel
@officerlatrel 5 жыл бұрын
Chup Smith FTL travel in halo also requires cryo pods. Traveling faster than light still takes a long time. In halo a slip space jump could take weeks to a month to get to where you are going. Just think about the massive scale of the universe the nearest star to earth is a couple of light years away. Even if you could go faster than light it is going to take some time to get there. Edit: if you did not have cryo pods then your troops would age a lot over the course of their deployment

Aw man, I can't wait for the RDA videos. James Cameron is a freaking genius when it comes to graphic design and conceptual military sci-fi. I don't even know how he does it. The director of Titanic has no business being so well-versed in firearms, theoretical sci-fi concepts, military structure, and other similar applied sci-fi concepts, yet he made Terminator 2, Aliens, and Avatar. The RDA might not have the best Interstellar Fleet, but their ground troops are tough and willing, working under seasoned military leadership, and backed by one of the wealthiest corporations known to mankind in the Avatar universe. Their Modular Combat Rifle (CARB) from Matanza arms is one of my personal favorite sci-fi weapons, alongside another one of Cameron's inventions (the M41A Pulse Rifle), and the RDA is one of the few fictional paramilitary organizations I've seen who even bother with combined arms tactics, ranging from exosuit operators, to mechanized infantry, to some very impressive air support. Being a private military, each soldier is hired from very diverse, capable backgrounds; usually long-time veterans or ex-special forces, and are paid handsomely, and given whatever the hell they want in terms of armament and loadout. Speaking of loadout, I have to get back to the RDA mercenary's weapon of choice; the modular CARB rifle developed by Matanza arms. It holds an 80 round disposable box type magazine with built in ammo counter, firing a caseless 5.56 round at a rate of 800-900 rounds per minute. This is all well and good, but the important part I want to talk about is the often packaged underslung grenade launcher that seems to be popular with these RDA forces. Fully semi-automatic, 8 HE on-contact shells? WHAT? That just turned EVERYONE under your employ into their own personal grenadier. That's one of the largest force multipliers you could possibly grant your troops. Imagine that kind of firepower in a modern day setting. Imagine that sort of firepower given to 1000 troops. That's 8000 20mm HE shells being launched out at a rate of around 1 shot a second. That kind of firepower just opened up a whole new Pandora's box. Jesus Christ. Anyway, their Exosuits are cool, their air support is cool, their troops are tough, crazy, experienced, and their armament is insane. These guys have the James Cameron trademark of future sci-fi badasses.

They aren't. That be the Iron bears. Why would WY have to mercenary groups fight it out. But they're not commandos. This this list is the standard ground pounders. If you want spec ops for the colonial Marines that be recon and Pathfinders. Which don't appear in the movies.

Wait a minue. A Xenomorph arm accelerating from a short distance, is stronger than a bulletproof glass? I mean in the 22th century, the materials used in vehicles are suposed to be far stronger than those we have today. The tiny glass windows (or windshields) we see in modern Tanks, AFVs and even in APCs are the thickest and most resistant bulletproof glass ever made. To have an Idea they are the only glass of it's kind to actually not be pierced by a .50 caliber round, being necessary 2-3 well placed shots to go through it. So, it's hard to imagine over a century in the future, an armoured vehicle can't resist to small arms shots. That is, assuming a Xenomorph arm can generate as much kinetic energy than a assault rifle, wich, also makes no sense, once the creature's arm didn't show having eather the mass neather speed to do so. And the worst: considering the vehicle is designed to work on places that not even have an atmosphere, a breach on that size could kill everyone inside, by discompression. And we actually have in real life a transparent material that can stop even antitank rounds. ALONtm is a transparent crystaline material that is over 10 times more resistant than bulletproof glass. And also, more transparent and scratch resistant. Even the NASA is adopting it for International Space Station.

It's not glass. The APC is using Armored Quartz, Fused Quarts has a compression strength of 160k PSI over 3 times that of mild steel.
