The M37A3 actually has an interesting lore reason for why it's being used by the marines so far into the future. It wasn't made for the military, it was a civilian market shotgun made by Armat to get in on the market of people who like to buy modern reproductions of older guns, kind of like how some companies make modernized M1897 Trench Guns today, and it got pretty popular. But the Colonial Marines started noticing squads using their personal requisition allocations (which are a real thing in the modern military) to purchase them for personal use, or just bringing their own from home when they were deployed and decided "well, if hundreds if not thousands of Marines are spending their requisition on these shotguns instead of other things, maybe there's something to it." and got Armat to make them a proper military model.

I think his point was more in the style of shotguns. An Ithaca pump action or a break action double barrel are... well... inferior designs to a more modern semi automatic tube-fed design much less a magazine. This was wonderfully charming. Jonathan's enthusiasm for the franchise was evident throughout and elevated the video! A reaction to the firearms of Alien Isolation would be fascinating since they take more of their inspiration from the 70's aesthetic of Ridley's original film and less from the ubiquitous inspirations of Cameron's sequel. Although there are probably not enough in that game to support a video alone, perhaps a more general look at the various Alien titles throughout the years might help bulk the numbers?

Jonathan keeps pointing out his questioning of Iron sights in the future, so I'd like to give my idea. Simply put it's better than nothing. Those helmets with aim assist devices can be damaged or lost. Attachable holographic sights and scopes can be damaged or lost. These things happen in the heat of battle. So it's nice to have something in case those advanced aiming systems fail. At least one can still aim.

16:27 If i had to wager a guess - this weapon functions on the same principle as the real life gyro jet (upscaled and improved) or the warhammer boltor. In warhammer, the main problem with the boltor is recoil - because it combines a traditional firing casing with a projectile which also has rocket properties (the main failure of the gryo jet). By attaching the entire gun to a rig and harness system with built in stabilizer and mechanical supports: you provide a platform to take the recoil and support the wait of the gun. Think of a Mark 19, with rotary magazine instead of belt, and longer projectiles which include high thrust propellants for rocket flight. Oddly enough.... this is doable with current technology. It would be clunky and a bit unwieldy, but we could actually produce this weapon today. It's not far off from the idea behind the OICW, but with projectiles which include rocket propellant after initial ignition of the conventional casing propellant. Perhaps not all that practical with current technology, but able to be made. Take a standard 40mm grenade, double the body length of the projectile, and have a double firing sequence where by it's launched from a rifled barrel and upon exiting - automatically extends fins and ignites the rocket propellant to perhaps as much as double the range of the projectile. The recoil - from firing such a heavy round would be extreme - but that becomes a non-issue if you did have the aliens universe rig and suspension system: or if it were mounted as such implements commonly are. It's not the worst idea for a gun which I've seen come from scifi media, but over time we've discovered that rotary magazines just aren't very practical. They're big, heavy, clunky, unwieldy, difficult to carry multiples of effectively: a belt is simply more efficient in terms of loading mechanisms, reliability and transporting them. Still - the round and weapon, as depicted, could actually work, using existing technologies available to us today - which is rather fascinating.

On the 'why do we need full auto and separate burst versions of the pulse rifle'? It's mentioned in the weapons lore entry that the burst version was intended to preserve ammo with newer soldiers prone to panic fire. (And that it fell out of favor when it turned out that said panic fire was actually saving a lot of new marines lives.) The Hyperdine break open shotgun is mentioned as a civilian design that some marines got for themselves. Honestly the lore pages for the weapons were some of the most interesting bits of lore in the game. Edit: Also hope that he does a second part, some of the unlocked guns have fascinating backgrounds, like the ones made originally for W-Y security, or the one who's design was freely given to break away colonies to make.

A note on ironsights in the future. From a practical standpoint, it's a redundancy feature. Even with digital HUD lenses that may or may not connect with the electronics in the weapon, what if it breaks or fails? Suddenly that ancient apperture and post from the distant past is an essential part of your weapon. I doubt Iron sights will ever be 100% phased out forever.

Its the same concept of ditching the crank windows from all vehicles. If you've never driven down the road with your electric windows shorted out (after you just rolled them down no less) and then it starts raining then you have no real idea just how valuable the crank window actually is. P.S. I speak from experience where the window was rolled down, shorted out and then it started raining. I had to open an umbrella in the vehicle and stick it up against the window and hold it there to stop the driver from getting soaked as we drove home. So LONG LIVE THE IRON SIGHT!!!!

Yes! I was hoping for this one! The M41A1 pulse rifle always was and still is one of my favorite sci-fi weapons of all time. The design is fantastic, the sound is so unique and meaty, and it tears through xenos like a hot knife through butter. The M56A2 smart gun is just icing on the cake, and I always loved the idea of a stabilized harness carrying a big gun capable of maneuvering itself to target the enemy.
@DrownedInExile

I thought the powered harness assisted Smart Gun was the coolest thing ever back in the day. But I have to admit it makes no sense. It's too bulky, too many dangly parts, you can't fire from the prone position or from a foxhole. And Drake couldn't just drop it when it ran out of ammo in the hive fight, he had to waste precious seconds clawing the rig apart. I think a better idea for a futuristic smart weapon, would be something that fires self-directed bullets. Bullets with micro-thrusters that give limited ability to home in on targets.

The thing about the Colonial Marines you always have to keep in mind is that they do have to deal with threats aside from the Xenos. So while they do have specialized weapons and armor developed to combat them (as any military has done with any specific threat in history) they also have a range of equipment used for other problems. The Kramer 50 isn't much use against Xeno's, but if memory serves it did pretty good in the Aliens/Terminator crossover comics, putting down T-101's with a single shot to the ol bucket. As for the Flechette, I think the rounds have a piercing effect able to hit multiple targets, useful when backed into a deadend hallway but not much else. I get what he is saying though, it's not ideal, but I do love them at least including weapons hinting at other threats they have to deal with...if only the games actually did, rather than just *always* focusing on the Xeno's :/

I would love to see a review of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain's weaponry. The weapons can be seen in 3rd and 1st person view as well as the model viewer which offer a close look at the highly detailed & realistic models. It would be interesting to see what Jonathan thinks of them as there are a lot of guns that are a combination of existing firearms as well as a selection of more fantastical weapons. Thank You for your work! I get a vast amount of entertainment from these videos.

With Halo Infinite releasing soon, it’d be cool to see Jonathan react to the Halo games weapons.

I think the Flechette SMG could be an hommage to the MP7's amor piercing capabilities with its smaller rounds, especially since it looks quite a bit like an MP7.

Yea but it does actually canonically shoot very thin needle like flechette rounds apparently, they are said to be very effective against armoured extraterrestrial threats ie. xenomorphs

@@spectre0969 I don't deny that, I'm just saying there are similarities with the real life MP7, both in terms of looks and, apparently, in terms of intent.

I hope we get more shots of Jonathan reacting to the actual live footage instead of just going over what was seen afterwards like we got here, I feel like it'd be a lot cooler.

Can we get Johnathan to react to the WW1 Game Series, specifically Verdun? I think he'd enjoy how grounded it is in reality of the Great War. :)

For Verdun they should try and get Gun Jesus. That man wrote the book on French military rifles.
