Hi Claire! I think your intuition is correct on the string of pearls. I live in Arizona. When you find them here in our plant shops they usually are potted with less soil, which allows the soil to dry out more easily as it is a succulent. Perhaps they potted them that way as an attractive way to show off the vines. It is common to even loop the vines up onto the top soil as they will root easily laying on the soil. Also, light from the top down really helps to keep the top full, preventing it from getting bald, or sparce on the top. Thank you so much for your videos! Love from the desert!❤🌵

I think so too. They have very shallow roots & prefer bright light, not a lot of humidity & prefer to be on the dryer side. I think those tall pots are just to show off the cascading tendrils. Definitely not necessary.

String of pearls is actually a crawling plant. It naturally wants to create mats. And as you pointed out, it is a succulent and doesn't want to stay wet. I assume that tall pots are used for showing off the plant's unusual characteristics. Marketing, in other words. It's definitely not for the health of the plant. I grow mine in a regular pot, but I've been thinking about taking some cuttings and trying them out in something long and shallow. Your instincts are absolutely correct. (No surprise there!) I hope your new string of pearls does well!

I believe both the string of pearls as well as string of tears have recently been moved from Senecio to Curio so there is a reason they look so different from other Senecio plants :) As far as cold goes, I've kept mine in an unheated conservatory /greenhouse that goes down to 0°C so as long as they aren't too wet and in a dark space, they handle the cold like a champ! I agree about the pot though, the reason could be practicality since the trailing strands might easily get damaged once they get longer than the distance between the edge of the pot and a growing tray? I'm not calling myself an expert on these, but mine love pruning and I found rerooting in a desired pot size less of a hassle than repotting. I'd snip off the ends of the strands where roots have already started to grow, remove the lower few leaves and root in a succulent soil mix, Seramis or something similar. You could also just place it next to the pot you'd like to grow them in and wait for the strands to reach the top of the soil, they should start rooting if you keep that new soil slightly moist:) I haven't repotted mine from the 9 cm pot in a few years and they haven't complained yet 😅 they get fertilized and pruned regularly

Your dragon fruit cactus ( if that is what it is) is in its juvenile stage. As it matures it gets much bigger and has only 3 “sides” instead of the current 4. Also it will have much less spines. A mature stem looks more like an orchid cactus. I have pressed/attached one of my mature stems against a pole, and it has grown upwards to about 1.5 meters. Then you need to ensure that at the top of the pole you have some sort of frame so that the new growth at the top can trail down. It’s these trailing stems that will flower and hopefully produce fruit. My pole with plant is in the middle of a wire frame (which I think is for tomatoes) and it’s new growth is starting to trail down. At the moment it is inside next to a south facing window and growing well. As soon as the weather warms up I will move it outside again where I keep it in full sun. Hopefully I might get some flowers and fruit this year, but our northern summers are quite short, but I can always hope!

Drymonia is in the gesneriad family, which includes african violets/saintpaulias/streptocarpus and lipstick plants (aeschynanthus), but it's a sister genus to these, not within them; in fact streptocarpus & aeschynanthus are more closely related to each other (both being in the Didymocarpoideae subfamily) than to drymonia (in the Gesnerioideae subfamily).

I love that you mentioned the strings of pearls because I recently got a string and propagated it on soil with the butterfly method and now I’m still unsure how to go about watering it. I even use a terracotta pot but I think that despite being there for a few weeks now the roots are maybe 2-3cm down at best (I let them be so can’t tell exactly) and I give them very little water and am sometimes still a little worried that it might not evaporate enough 😅 I’m more prone to overwatering and the humidity in my apartment is mostly around 55-70% so not ideal for succulents, too 🥲

Hi Claire, I agree with you about the pot that the string of pearls is in. I think it’s in a tall pot just for aesthetics, but it would definitely retain water too long.

You should repot your dragon fruit and thin it. They grow super fast. A couple feet a year even. They need a lot of light and more moisture than desert cacti. They are epiphytic. They grow on trees and rocks.

English Ivy isn't invasive in the UK. Invasive species tend to be those from abroad (Japanese Knotweed, Giant Hogweed and the like). It is fast-growing and dominant though, but a valuable part of our native flora - gardeners often wrongly describe it as such. Wonderful video, I must find myself one of those Caladiums 🙂

My manjula is GORGEOUS. Grows so fast, the leaves are all different, some part are highly variegated and some have vibrant greens with less white. I LOVE the variety of the leaves. You’re so right about the white parts turning brown easily! I have mine sitting directly under a humidifier and it’s still turning brown on the ones with more white. Crazy bcs my snow queen is veryyy white and in front on my heater and doesn’t brown. It’s always the ones I’m attached to that give me the hardest time 🥲

I agree that String of Pearls doesn't require a deep planter. I think they have a shallow root system. Mine was in a small, shallow planter and it grew like a weed. I put it in a deeper pot just because I liked the look of the pot, but I think I am going to change it soon. It needs a haircut, so I think I'm going to repot it into a shallow and wide pot and then add the cuttings to make it fuller. Regarding favorites, I recently got a Hoya Latifolia Sarawak after being inspired by yours. I love it so much!

I have a string of pearls in a unglazed ceramic pot hanging in a Southern window. It is around 3 ft long and doing very well. I water it when I think about it, maybe every 2 weeks or so. Maybe the tall pot is just to have some height for it to hang until it is sold.

Hi from Australia 🇦🇺 New sub here. I bought the Alocasia sinuata from a bunnings which is a chain store here a month ago. It's summer here but we really haven't had a warm summer. It sits on a table with my other Alocasias. I haven't changed its soil yet because it is still growing well. It is in the process of putting out an 8th leaf. No cabinet. I don't think it's that delicate. I have 12 alocasias and 24 different prayer plants. Because they are on it some sort of soil. I'm now writing down when I have watered these 2 types. I would like to try leca but I just can't afford all the pots and leca required atm. So I'm very careful with my watering! Feel the same about the sinuata love that I'm saving a endangered plant❤

I would be sceptical about that pothos being the result of hybridisation - golden pothos varieties (so epipremnum aureum) are genetically 'broken' - the genes required to produce blooms are defective, so ordinarily they will _never_ bloom even if given ideal conditions. Whether they can be induced into blooming (with some hormonal treatments or similar) I'm unsure.

I had a mature dragon fruit. Its spikes were short and hard.... Not like a bunny ear cactus. I recently sold mine though. I just didn't have good enough lighting for it in the winter and it was growing weird. They do grow FAST, good light or not. I'm SUPER into hoyas right now. While super common, I think my Rosita is currently my favorite. I also just got a Hoya Chicken Farm that I can't stop staring at. It's absolutely gorgeous, even if it still only has one leaf :) My favorite non-Hoya... Probably my Syngonium Chiapense. Others that I love are my philodendron Rio and my scindapsus treubii moonlight.

The only cacti that have glochids are in the opuntia family aka the prickly pear family. Dragon fruit do not have glochids. Cacti are divided into four or five subfamilies, depending on the source: Cactoideae, Opuntioideae, Maihuenioideae, Pereskioideae. Most of what we think of as cacti are part of the Cacoideae subfamily. All the columnar cacti, Mammillaria, Astrophytum, epiphytic cacti, etc. Maihueniodieae and Pereskiodeae are uncommon as houseplants unless you’re a collector. They look nothing like what you think of as cactus. The remaining one, Opuntiodeae, are the prickly pear family. They also include things like Tephrocactus. They are the ones that have glochids in addition to spines.

Oh no don't even mention those glochids! When I started getting into cactus and succulents I saw a couple bunny ears types, one with orange one with yellow dots and brought them home. Few weeks later decided to repot, despite using cardboard to hold them for days after I had those horrible things in my hands jabbing me with everything I touched. I had to keep duck taping my hands and ripping it off, drove me crazy. I located them in a faraway corner then never went near them, even watering from a distance. After a few months I thought what is the point and threw them away, armed with gloves, bin bag, eye goggles etc. Felt kinda bad but they're evil. Never again!

Unpopular opinion, but critically endangered plants will unlikely become less endangered if we have them in our homes. The more people will want them, the more the black market with these plants will flourish and will be taken from their natural habitat just to saturate the market...
