I push my tools, workshop, skills and general woodworker woodworking knowledge to the max to design and build 10 awesome keepsake or jewelry boxes. Maybe not a DIY project per say, but if you were motivated you could do it yourself!
Miter Fold Dado Set I use in this build: www.rockler.com/rockler-miter...

To enter to win a Miter Fold Dado Set share this video on a major social media platform, and leave one comment each time you do, multiple shares count for multiple chances to win.
Also, I can only give these away to residents of the US and Canada. I know this really sucks for all my international viewers who support me. The laws around international giveaways are tricky and beyond my ability to navigate right now, really sorry for that.
All sharing and commenting for consideration in this video must be done before 7:00 pm US Central Time on Friday, September 22nd, 2017.
For all safety and compatibility questions around the Miter Fold Dado Set, please refer to information on Rockler’s website, Andy Klein assumes no liability for its use.
Inspiration for video:
Several years ago I took a class taught by Seth Rolland, who is a brilliant furniture designer, and he made a comment about production work, that is, batching out multiple identical pieces of furniture. He made a point that all, of the most successful furniture builders and designers had at some point spent time working in this way, designing a piece, then building many units to sell. He implied that there were insights to be gained when working this way, but did not expand on exactly what those were, and I’ve since been curious what I’ve been missing, having never built more than 1 of anything. I’ve also really wanted to explore and show off the production capability of the miter fold dado set, so I decided to build 10 boxes, with the tool, see how it goes selling them, and just maybe learn what Seth was trying to teach us.

Hey Andy, I just saw this, well done and thanks for the shout out. I think you got the point perfectly - with production it's obvious that you need to carefully think out an efficient process, and set up each step carefully for accuracy in order to achieve good results quickly. Applying that to one of a kind pieces will also help you achieve good results quickly, which is key to making a living as a woodworker. Keep up the good work!

Hi Seth, thanks for your comment, I got a real kick out of knowing you saw the video and that I took away the right message from your talk. I left that talk with a lot of respect and admiration for your work and insights, and still draw on both. Hope you are doing well.

@@AndrewKleinWW Thanks Andy, I'm doing well. I'm mostly working on commissions, but spending this spring helping teach a 12 week course called "The Art of Furniture" with Kevin Reiswig at the Port Townsend School of Woodworking. Lots of fun and great student projects in the works. I like the tools you've been designing, the vise is beautiful!

@@AndrewKleinWW My wife and some of our colleagues refer to him as Prince Seth! Glad you too got to spend some time with our wood fellow! ps....very good video Andrew! As a guy who creates a new wheel with nearly all of my work it was inspiring.

As an amateur with woodworker, i typically feel overpowered with the entire arrangement kzbin.infoUgkxrYREG3-7f1Aqk9ams3ZESRNzGnfdUtyQ . Be that as it may, this arrangements drove me through with much clarity and effortlessness woodplans. Works i now work like a genius. That is great!

Thank you very much. Love the video. I have been a carpenter/woodworker for most of my life. Mostly I watch Woodworking videos to help with my insomnia. This is the first time I happily felt I was seeing and learning new things. I can't wait to see more other videos.

Ah man, I'm 4 and a bit minutes in... That technique with the painters tape first then making the cut for glue up protection is amazing. I just made myself a pair of bedside tables and that would have saved me loads of time and it's perfectly to the edge. Cant wait to try it

This was great. We run a small home business/shop and we make parts for a manufacturer’s products. We’re taking it over from some very talented guys who have been doing it for years and years. It has been incredibly eye opening how we go about doing some of the work now that we’re making hundreds of them, and they all need to be pretty consistent. I think what you’d continue to see if you pressed on making these is that you will be CONVINCED that you’ve thought it all the way through and have made the most efficient jigs and techniques etc, only to find that there are almost ALWAYS more ways to improve your work flow, jigs etc. You’ll have sessions where you’re going to make the “final” version of something, only to eventually redesign it to be WAY better than before. Finding a serious flaw after you’ve made hundreds of something, causing them to all go into the fire pit, is an experience that will change you forever. Cheers!

Popped this bad boy on Facebook as well. I think the fact that you discussed the philosophy of production woodworking made this video even more interesting, and it looked like it changed you to think up new approaches to increase efficiency.
