Ringing Bell acknowledged??? Hell yes!! Can confirm, Ringing Bell is metal as hell. The juxtaposition between the Disney-like pastoral scenes and relaxing music against the story of bloody revenge and monstrous transformation is unlike anything you'll ever see. Whisper of the Heart will always be my favourite Ghibli movie but Only Yesterday is very good, especially if you're older (like not teens/20s) and you feel a bit stuck on life. It's almost nostalgic in a way that makes you think about where your life was and is now. I recommend it.

I always love seeing your recommendations. They're so spot on for me. I read the Blue Flag manga because I watched one of these videos. I've been planning to watch a couple of these, but now I think I'm going to watch them sooner than later! It's been a while since I watched an anime movie, but recently I watched the First Slam Dunk. I never read/watched the original, but First Slam Dunk was a surprisingly amazing. The CGI was much better than I thought it'd be and the story was really well done. I got to arrange more anime movie nights for myself!

Hell yeah, Liz and the Blue Bird mentioned! It’s such a beautifully animated film with a message of slight bittersweetness. Taking initiative and making a decision out of love, even if it hurts you & is difficult. Nozomi and Mizore are such strong girls who were able to let each other go for the better. It goes to show how far their love goes for each other, and I love the film for that 🫶🫶🫶🫶

So happy you brought up "Only Yesterday"! 100% agree that it is just an out-and-out incredible film. But isn't it the case that the main character's hometown is not in the countryside but she just visited a little bit when she was a girl? My own read of the film is that it's not about nostalgia per se and more about reconnecting with the desire from your past that you might have tried to ignore. Anyway, I cried for 10 minutes straight at the ending. Hope more people see it!

Only yesterday is the example I go to when people ask about genuinely mature animated films. It’s beautiful and complex to the degree it sadly won’t connect to those without the patience for it. It’s not my favorite Ghibli film, but it has a subtly that often goes under appreciated in animation. Whisper to the heart exemplifies that subtly too.

So happy to see Ringing Bell love. My mom bought this for me when I was like 3 or 4, and the ending had me bawling. She thought she messed up, and I'd never watch it again, but no, I kept watching it for the next 30+ years. I would have my S.O.s watch it, because honestly, if they can't appreciate Ringing Bell, are they for me? My wife loved it (not the reason I married her, but a reason I kept her around lol) and it didn't need to go as hard as it did, but I appreciate that it did.

I watched Only yesterday for the first time when I was 15 I think, and I really liked it. I'm 23 now and love it even more. Coming of age stories are usely about teens becoming adults but there's something about stories like only yesterday, that are about adults trying to find their way through life that I really love. In a way it's about learning how to live

I'm also happy you checked out Arashi no Yoru Ni recently. That's another underrated anime film that I really wish would get an official US release in some form. I saw Liz and The Bluebird when it was in theaters for the single weekend it was out in the US. Absolutely phenomenal experience, since the music built off everyday sounds is such a core part of that film. For those who don't know the it's from the same studio, director, and composer as A Silent Voice. The composer, Kensuke Ushio, has done a lot of well known shows such as Ping Pong The Animation, Devilman Crybaby, Chainsaw Man, and DanDanDan. His Silent Voice and Liz stuff is very different tonally from those, but Liz is still my favorite by far because of just how much it's integrated into everything going on in the movie.

And OMG getting to the end after going through all that carnage and hearing the sweet soft music going 🎶 Chirins- beeeell 🎶 made me so sad. You understand his loss of innocence, and while he did end up avenging his mother it did not bring him any peace. Leaving him without a home to return to. But knowing if he had never gone through that transformation, he likely would have ended up dead along with his herd anyway. That poor poor lamby 😢
