I am genuinely a bit disappointed that you missed the infamously confrontational Fresh Air interview with Gene Simmons. Terry Gross has been famous for over forty years at this point for being the absolute model of professionalism as an interviewer, and it goes to show just how wretched Simmons' attitude was (and is) that the whole thing is like pulling teeth. Granted, it's a radio interview, so maybe footage isn't there or is hard to find so it doesn't work as well in a video format, but it's *excruciating.*

The Point & Incubus, Pointfest 2023... Rizzuto ("The Rizzuto Show") was supposed to interview the band right before they went on stage, but their new tour manager asked for the questions in advance, which is something The Point doesn't do, and when the music director refused, DJ Killgore went and did the interview solo... Then signed the guitar that the station was auctioning for charity... And the tour manager went full irate on the director AKA Donnie Fandango... Needless to say, The Point won't be playing or sponsoring Incubus any time soon now

When Siouxie and the Banshees ended their set, he turned to me and said, I gotta go man, and off he ran. The next thing I know he was onstage, this “cool guy” was Ice-T and his band BodyCount started the song CopKiller. Lol, I had no clue while we were talking but now I see that the “friends” were bodyguards and that’s why they never spoke to us, lol. After he walked away, random people kept coming up to me asking how I know him etc.. I just said, “we just hang out and talk music sometimes” 😂 Also, if my brain damaged memory is correct, Nine Inch Nails opened up for Siouxie and the Banshees , they played in the daylight 110 degrees in Phoenix , Reznor’s PA kept blowing fuses because of the heat and the fire department was hosing down the crowd. @theneonchimpchannel9095 Жыл бұрын
With the KISS interview, the real reason that Gene was upset was that Tom Snyder was paying more attention to Ace because Ace was the one being the most entertaining. Yes, he was out of control, but he was funny, not taking it too seriously and it was clear that Tom Snyder was having a blast talking to him. Everyone but Gene had been drinking before the show, even Paul is clearly out of it. Gene was there trying to be serious and the others, especially Ace and Peter, just wanted to have fun.
@TheJohnnyCotts Жыл бұрын
According to their former manager, Bill Aucoin, Ace HATED doing pre-interviews. When Tom Snyder's people got done with it, they told Tom: "Paul and Gene are the leaders and will do most of the talking. Peter will talk if you ask him a question. Ace WON'T talk." Much to his surprise, he asked Ace a question - and Ace wouldn't shut up, much to the annoyance of Gene.

This is something I have always disliked a great deal about rock stars- for lack of a better term- the way they try and pretend they don't want to be noticed or that they're too cool to care- when the reality is, they've dedicated their life to getting their face in front of a camera- you don't become a rock star by accident. They love every second of it and live for someone to notice them or ask them questions- and if they don't- they should find another job. Don't become a dentist if you hate teeth- it's not rocket science. Even Maynard is bad at this- and usually he's not a typical rock star type but- I've seen him be extremely rude for no good reason to interviewers. The one question that seems to really tick him off is "Why is the band named Tool."- he refuses to answer it. I mean I get it; he thinks the answer is either apparent to you or- it would be a waste if time trying to explain it to you. Which I guess is true to some degree but- chances are that interviewer had never even heard their music so- how would they know that? This was after Under Tow, so they weren't exactly huge back then.

I don't think I would call this interview "awful" by any means, but there's an interview Prince did as part of his appearance on _American Bandstand_ back in 1980, and the entire time he's giving these one- and two-word answers to Dick Clark's questions. Some of them are honestly pretty funny: at one point the host, Dick Clark, asks him "did somebody tell me you played every instrument on this album, is that correct?" and he just answers "Maybe." Prince would say about that interview, later that year in the Star Tribune, “That tripped me out when Dick Clark asked how I come from Minneapolis, of all places...That really gave me an attitude. TV personalities are hard to talk to. They come out of certain bags. Music is music. A place is a place.” Dick Clark would later remark, “I’ve always said that was one of the most difficult interviews I’ve ever conducted, and I’ve done 10,000 musician interviews.” It's pretty easily available online, if you want to see for yourself.

The KISS interview was/is/and always will be the best ever. Ace was just having a great time and funny as hell. Tom Snyder freakin' loved interviewing Ace. My favorite part was when Tom asked Gene if he plays the bass (he pronounced it like the fish) and then he asks Ace what he plays in the band and he responds with "I PLAY THE TROUT!!!" and laughs his ass off. It was so damn awesome.

And now Blur has been left in the dustbin of history thank the stars. Rock “stars” behaving in such a bullying and aggressive manner is just lame. Compare to the deserved and outstanding thrashing the Pistols gave Grundy who was notorious for his very creepy SA behavior (as seen with Siouxsie here who was just a teenager). Steve Jones is also wearing a hilarious shirt.

With The Bee Gee's interview Barry was trying to take it all in stride for a while, at least on camera, but, then the interviewer was just such an ass that he just couldn't stand him any longer. Ozzy is great, imperfect, but aren't we all? I love the man, warts and all. Scott Stapp was a mentally ill man with substance abuse issues. It's just like some people to hone in on that, and make a joke of it. As for Howard Stern's wife, I'm sure she's experienced worse. Stapp should've been made to leave since he is clearly not sober here. It's just sad in my opinion. Really, a drunk Stapp ,talks like a sober Stern. The OLD or ORIGINAL Stern, not the current Stern who is trying to seem so nice and good, or at least much better. I'm sure the show's producers made sure that booze was flowing freely for Stapp to indulge in for just THIS kind of a thing to happen. I say that because, many shows these days make sure that the people on the show indulge in it so that there is more excitement when people are not thinking as they normally would without the booze. Anyone else think that Iggy Pop is high here? And, he is a punk icon, or his attitude is PUNK, even if the music isn't. When I think of punk, I think Sex Pistols and The Ramones. But, I don't know many Iggy Pop songs, just the one that was the opening music for Anthony Bordain's s travel show, and a really popular one "Lust for life". Then with KISS, Gene Simmon's is very judgemental about people who use drugs and drink booze to excess. I also THINK that Paul Stanley wasn't much of a drinker or drug user as well. But, I must admit that Gene can be a very irritating person himself, and he is sober when HE does it. I will admit that when I see him, he is on camera, BUT, I do think that most or all of it is the real Gene. Sure, nobody likes to deal with a person that is actually mentally in "outter space", but, it was a Rock n roll group after all, so, nobody was very shocked I would imagine. As far as awkward interviews, I am not shocked, many talented people are not super extroverted. Sure, some are, but, it's no big deal. It's the music that really matters. When you are a fan, you like seeing the band and hearing what they say, but, many times you will have at least 4-5 band members, and SOMEBODY usually is great with taking that position as the bands mouthpiece, and they take the pressure off of the more introverted band members.

1:49 This (among other things) is why MTV was going down hill in the 90s apparently, for interviews things had gotten so bad that if they couldn't get Kurt Loader, they'd grab any doof off the street. (they may have not yet hired Carson Daily, or Kennedy.)

8:28 "Sex Pistols aren't Saints", Yeah, The Saints are the name of a couple of different bands entirely, At least the Australian band were punk also, but definitely not the same as the freaking Sex Pistols 17:18 "Iggy's performance" To be honest, a lot of Countdown's "Live" performances were like that, They did a few live performances, but most of the time it was run like the UK's Top of the Pops, where the bands were overdubbed Though Iggy was such in a state of so not Giving a fuck, so it was immediately obvious that there was overdubbing in the broadcast

Snyder in that era was a goddamn legend. Seeing him have a serious and respectful conversation with Wendy O. Williams (probably one of the few journalists of that era who even tried to do that), and watching him take well-deserved shots at Kim Fowley shows how Synder was a classic rock 'n' roll personality in his own right.

The KISS interview actually started good, but by the end the interviewer was just interviewing Ace, and he was so wasted he had no idea what was happening, everything was hysterical to him. It’s obvious Gene and Paul had been dealing with this behaviour for years and were over it. Every one of these interviews showed serious lack of disrespect from some artists, as well as interviewers. Probably why the old MTV type shows don’t exist anymore. Countdown was my all time favourite show (by the way, we can blame Molly Meldrum for Madonna)

I think Nardwuar should probably let some of the people he's interviewing in on the bit. By this point, people know who he is, but back then if you weren't familiar with him then he just come across as a bit of an annoying jerk. I remember an interview he did with Beck over the phone which ended with Beck getting angry and hanging up on him. Beck doesn't strike me as the kind of guy it's easy to piss off, but Nardwuar kept going at him and asking the same question over and over. I don't think it was right for Blur to bully him, but having seen his interactions with some other artists, it feels like he wants to annoy them and when you do that, you're going to get that kind of reaction eventually. I did see a good interview he did with Peter Tork though, mostly because Tork played along and was basically one step ahead of him at all times.

WHAT?! Gene Simmons is a notoriously sober tea sipper LOL OTHER ROCKERS have told stories about him showing up at parties and dissing them and other guests for drinking and partying and shit (thanks for coming, Gene).. "With 49 years as a rockstar, Simmons has had plenty of time, money and opportunity to embrace the vices so many others in the industry have succumbed to. However, Simmons, who is a founding member of the band, has never had more than a sip of alcohol in his life and avoids drugs entirely." - HE IS LITERALLY KNOWN FOR ALWAYS TELLING PEOPLE TO TONE IT DOWN LOL So you're wrong with that take, Bro. The Stone Roses are one of my favorites. They made one of the best albums in rock history but I would never have wanted to meet them. Most of their public things went like this. I still remember the back and forth interviews with Megadeth and Metallica when they would have beef with eachother. There's a video going on KZbin somewhere, where Metallica was being interviewed and they played a song from Megadeth, asking the band if they knew who that was. James Hetfield immediately started mocking Dave's vocals after it was played and tried playing it all of as if it was a joke. Some shows and interviewers really loved stirring that pot between them.
