I shop at Trader Joe’s for my staples. Two items I get you did not mention are the heavy cream and triple ginger cookies. The cream whips up so beautifully. I also use it in making soaps. If it gets to the best use date I whip it into butter. The triple ginger cookies are absolutely addictive eating out of the container. I also use them ground up in place of graham crackers for pie crusts.

Thank you for making this video. I have been a Trader Joe's customer for 30 years. Their French Vanilla ice cream is made by Double Double Rainbow out of San Francisco. It is still family owned, and the cows are pasture grazed in Northern CA. from family-owned farmers. There is very little air used in the ice cream ( dense) and no fillers. It's absolutely yummy.

The shelf stable whipping cream is FANTASTIC!! And it's $1.29!!
@katherinetyrrell88102 жыл бұрын
I really enjoyed that one! I went to Trader Joe's for the first time in over two years a couple of weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised by the deals. Something that I thought was really cool was the box of shelf stable whipped cream. I generally whip my own from fresh, but this one I can keep in my pantry for a year. When I am ready to use it, I refrigerate it for 6 hours and then whip. I added vanilla and a smidge of coconut sugar. It was good and stayed good in my fridge (already whipped) for 2 days. I think it was $1.69. I had never seen anything like and I thought it was steal. Also, their organic dark chocolate chips are wonderful! Thank you again for everything you do. You are always so encouraging and your tips are both helpful and educational. :)

I store my peanut butter upside down and eventually the oil mixes in. Also, if you buy seasoned chips, open the bottom.... that's where all the seasoning settles.

I love it when my mom sends me one of your videos! I’ve been watching you for years and have broadened my kitchen knowledge thanks to you. Plus you solidify what I already have learned through the years. I am now taking care of my mom and my nephew (who lives with us while in college). I try to validate for her why I prefer one version of food over the other and I could be blue in the face explaining and she has still been negative nelly over it (I have had to go to confession for the “discussions” we’ve had revolving around this). But when she hears the same things I have said from you it is truth for her. I am so appreciative for your solidifying what I am trying to do for my mom. She now wants to go to Trader Joe’s with $100 budget! Not sure $100 will happen but it will be a fun afternoon activity for us with her new outlook! Thank you!

Oh Kate!! This is so cute! I really laughed when you said that you can talk to your mom till you’re blue in the face about something but when she hears it from me (or I imagine from any third-party) then she’ll believe it. I am going to really make you laugh with this story. When my dad was alive I would tell him some thing with a lot of information. He would be somewhat skeptical. Then he would ask me… What does Ted think? Ted is my husband. My mom and I would laugh so much that my father needed validation from another man! And then when my dad would see my husband… He would say so what do you think about X. And then Ted would validate what I said and then my dad would be happy. My dad was the nicest man on the planet but my mom and I always chuckled that he was a little on the old fashion side when it came from taking advice from his daughter. But he worked with a lot of women and he was always very proud of that fact and would tell me they were very smart. But I think with so many parents… You are always their child and it is hard for them to think of you as an adult. But the cute thing was… When my dad became very old he really started to turn turning to me for assistance… Especially with the iPad. And he would start to tell my mother… Mary knows all about this. She’s a wealth of knowledge. We need to listen to her. Too cute! Love, Mary❤️🤗❤️

@@MarysNest 😂 you got me laughing, Sweet Mary! It is true that you will never fully grow up in your parents eyes! I only did in my father’s eyes in his hospice care months and my daughter and sons are still children in my eyes. They are all 30 and above and out on their own but still in so many ways still the children that have so much to learn. But now they are in God’s hands. I am happy with the fact that since two have become parents I, myself, have gained intelligence in their eyes and I have gotten and apology from one of them for her behavior as a child since becoming a mom herself and dealing with the preteen and teen years. 😂
@mothershelper19812 жыл бұрын
That was always true with my daughters, and still is actually. I can tell them something and they say yeah yeah and it goes in one ear and out the other but the minute they read it on the Internet it's gospel. My middle daughter in particular starts telling me about something exciting she found on the internet and I will remind her that I told her about that 5 years ago or that I was doing that with her when she was a baby. I try not to make her feel bad about it but it is frustrating that she doesn't listen to what I say but she will listen to what she reads from others. Oh well, as long as she learns it.

@@mothershelper1981 I just reply as if I’d never heard it before. I fear belittling her and she’s my Momma. But daughters may be different to correct. I don’t get that back from my daughter. 🤷🏻♀️

A story like this always makes me remember the Mark Twain quote. "When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much he had learned in seven years."--Mark Twain.

Thank you for talking about how to stock the pantry using the prepper pantry. My dad shared a lesson he learned during WW2 to keep a back up for anything used regularly and a back up for the back up just in case. Rotating inventory is a dandy habit to help keep the pantry and fridge fresh. Again, thank you.

I switched from coffee to tea several years ago. While I now buy in bulk, when I was first getting started I found the tea selection at TJs very helpful. Also for beverages, they’re very reasonable for their fruit juices that have nothing but the single unsweetened juice. Added to sparkling water with a bit of stevia, these juices make a very refreshing drink.

currently watching! With a lot of stores having "just in time inventory" management (which is precarious in these current supply chain challenges), there are folks who manage their kitchen in the same manner ie not repurchasing until something is needed. So I especially love your phrasing "multiple streams of food", akin to multiple streams of income. I will adopt that for use in nudging people toward having a robust 4 corners pantry. Perhaps they will be able to better visualize and take action if they can understand it from a business sense (and not be scared off by the term, "prepper"). Look at all those goodies! I haven't been out to Trader Joes in awhile, and now I am itching to take a peek! Might find some variety beyond what I am used to picking up from other grocers. I suspect I wont save a dime as all their offerings look so good and my weakness is food. :) Thanks for all you do, Mary. Much appreciated information.

Hi Carey, Oh my goodness!! Yes, I never thought of that. Some folks may not like the term or idea of perpper or prepping. (Can't understand that for the life of me though after the last few years! Maybe just the words..."be prepared"...might work better.) In any event, so happy you like the term "Multiple Streams of Food". We really need this these days because we have no idea what the future holds. So glad you're here! Love, Mary

@@MarysNest All good! Keep doing what you're doing. You are who I recommend to those that dont know where to start, or who only imagine dark underground bunkers, haha. I imagine normalizing the term prepper/prepping can only help others learn to help themselves. Like you, I cant understand for the life of me why someone wouldn't want added insurance and assurance...and convenience! But people are funny. Have a great weekend!
@AllOutBible2 жыл бұрын
@@MarysNest Mary, some people associate the concept of "prepping" with middle age racist white guys who spend most of their time playing with guns and talking about emergencies like it's some kind of Rambo fantasy. I know I did until I started searching for women and people of color who prep. then I was able to find people who thought about emergencies as chances to help others in addition to themselves. who didn't fondle guns all day, and spent money on groceries from the store instead of all the mass produced prepper food.

Mary there is another thing at Trader Joe’s I buy and that is their TJ shopping bags. In California there is a 10 cent charge for every bag regardless it is paper or plastic so we have learned to take our shopping bags with us. They have paper bags but also carry more permanent bags hanging on the wall. Around Thanksgiving it has been a tradition to offer for sale a large envelope filled with 1 regular TJ bag and 2 others designed for TJ stores from around the country. I think they are made of oil cloth. Makes for a great inexpensive hostess gift and for collecting bags designed for every state. I am still trying for the Boston bag with the big lobster on the front. I do have the Texas one. They stopped offering these during the COVID lockdown and hope they start again this year.
@euenfheiejrj2 жыл бұрын
I think the whole point of taxing bags is to get people to bring their own. We have a bag tax here in Chicago and we always bring our own. I don’t think it’s a big deal (and I walk to the store), plus the reusable bags are much better (durable) than paper or plastic bags. I love their fabric bag and also their greeting cards and flowers!

I may have to "suck it up" and go for a "haul" because the prices are so darn good 👍 Excellent video. Blessings 🥰

I love buttermilk , most people don't , but it's so good for you , your skin will get beautiful when you drink it , I'm going to try and make some , my mom use to make it all the time with powdered milk . It's an acquired taste like plain yogurt is , Love your videos !!

Mary, what an incredible video! I’m always so glad when I see your videos because you pack so much good information into them! I love Trader Joe’s. My only concern sometimes is that the products are not local. If they were it would be that much better for me. They have the best prices in pastured eggs here in California. Our local big chain stores charge $8 a dozen. TJ is $4.5 per dozen. It is a splurge for us but one we are willing to make. I live all your food tips that you include on how to use everything! Mary, you are Emerald! 💎 thank you

Actually the fresh food is pretty local (dairy & bread is always regional) but it is an imports store so it's always going to partner with other countries. That's why the Italian foods and EVOO are so good - because it's from Italy (also how they guarantee non-GMO wheat - because it's from Italy; can't get non-GMO wheat in the states).

Thank you Mary! I also like their gluten free brown rice pasta. It is very reasonable . Last time I was there I got their artichoke hearts in a glass jar packed in olive oil , so I can use everything in the jar! I love artichoke heart dip 😊 I appreciate all you do ! God bless you 🙏

Hi Mary! This is a great series! I love my local Trader Joe's. Some time, can you talk about storing potatoes? I seem to do everything right and they still sprout quickly. I have heard not to store in refrigerator, but not sure why not.

Thank you for this wonderful video & for your great tips. I love Trader Joe's because they carry many reasonably priced and healthier options for groceries than other stores, including organic chicken breasts, uncured bacon, organic eggs grass fed butter, organic sliced New Zealand cheddar, organic teas & coffees, coconut oil, coconut milk & cream, produce etc. I enjoy many of the products you featured and learned of a few more I'd like to try🙂

Your term “multiple streams of food” really resonated with me. My goals are to feed my family healthy food and to be prepared for emergencies, not to be homemade purist. I enjoy gardening, canning, fermenting, dehydrating and cooking from scratch, but I don’t do it all every day. P.S. I use olive oil to clean and moisturize my face. I rarely use soap, and my complexion has improved so much.

I love the ginger turmeric tea bags in my chicken broth (or vegetable broth). Either by the mug or to put in while making my stock. I take the manuka honey by spoonful to just swallow when I feel a bit under weather and other times too.

You got all the best things! I also love their bagged organic baby kale - very tender and great for soup. I used to buy the old fashioned grahams all the time. They're wonderfully thick and delicious. Far superior to regular boxed graham crackers.

TJ’s also has 5 lb bags of organic all purpose flour for $3.99. That’s almost half the price of organic flour at my grocery store!

Love Trader Joe's, but I must admit, I kind of avoid it because while it is not particularly expensive, I always walk out having spent more than I should have, because they have so many neat things to try! ( I also found that they usually have good prices on canned tuna, marinated artichokes and capers)

@@cinza6670 absolutely. Getting the corn meal will soon be a problem since our government is stopping so many farmers from growing. I have Celiac, so, i need certified gluten free which also makes it a little harder to find. I have friends that often make their own. I don't eat enough to bother making my own but my 4 yr old granddaughter loves them. Blessings, julie

Thank you so much, Mary, for this video. I am not sure if we have a Trader Joe's in our area, but honestly, some of the prices you quoted are lower than our Aldi's which is shocking! I will be on the look out for a Trader Joe's for sure! BTW - I LOVE beets, pickled or otherwise! The only one in my family, sadly.

Mary, another great video. Thank you for keeping us informed of these great bargains! Our closest trader Joe's is about 30 miles but we love going when we have a reason to be in that area. I'm sure you could find great deals at other stores like Sam's, BJ's or Costco as well. Have a blessed weekend, my friends!

Hi Rob, I know what you mean about the distance. Our Trader Joe’s is not close either so it’s a real treat to go there every once in a while. I love Sam’s and Costco. Wish we had a BJ’s here but I don’t know of one anywhere near our area. I wonder if there might be one in San Antonio. I’ll have to check. But hope you and the family are doing great! Love and God bless, Mary🤗

Trader Joe’s bewilders me. However I pop in on occasion and I buy two things: 1). Their canned beans with tomato sauce. From Bulgaria. 2). Their Grecian style canned eggplant with onions. From Bulgaria. Wonderful vegetarian option- pop top lid- great over rice- under $2. Same company. BTW: their ground coffee in our area of Maryland is sold at $6.99/ pound. Still cheaper than the local supermarket here: $10-$12/pound.

100% agree about Oat or Almond milk and other non-dairy milk. Checking the label immediately tells you the real story. I still say Milk is 100% milk and good for you. Be it cow's milk or goat milk... and like you say, so many things can be made from milk. Oh yummy!!!

Mary, thank you for this, such great, timely tips! Re: garlic, I've learned through Bobby at FlavCity that most garlic we get is from China, who reportedly use unsavory waste to fertilize their garlic and then bleach it so it looks clean & white. I try to get organic garlic now, unless I can get California garlic, which is apparently grown healthier than China. Still, I try not to take chances with it and go for organic. 🥴
@jessieb.71882 жыл бұрын
That claim from FlavCity is not true and was totally disputed. But if you're concerned about products from China, you should know Trader Joe's doesn't import anything from China.

Everything but the bagel and Green Goddess seasonings are the best! So many great deals at TJ's. They have really good prices on snacks- crackers/ORGANIC corn chips. Oh and have you tried the Ginger snaps in the plastic container? I am sure it's cheaper to make your own but these are pretty fantastic for a treat!

I love your videos. They are so informative. I thought I'd comment on you homemade potato chips. I raw pack/can my potatoes, I can to make mashed, french fries and potato chips. All I have to do is rinse them, let them sit so most of the water drains out, then fry them. They come out great. It saves me from having to peel and cut whenever we feel like french fries or potato chips. Have a blessed day.
