Amateur question about why gamma_{ab} can be set to eta_{ab}. For example. how can the metric of a half cosine world sheet be eta_{ab}?

it's a symmetric 2x2 matrix, so the degrees of freedom are gamma(00), gamma(11) and gamma(10) = gamma(01)
